मित्रध्रुक् कुहकश्चैव विशेषात् पङ्क्तिदूषकाः
A betrayer of friends, a deceiver, and especially those who corrupt the line of guests—
ब्रह्मभावनिरस्ताश्च वर्जनीयाः प्रयत्नतः
And those who have abandoned contemplation of Brahman must be diligently avoided.
महायज्ञविहीनश्च ब्राह्मणः पङ्क्तिदूषकः
A brāhmaṇa who neglects the great sacrifices is a corrupter of the line of guests.
तामसो राजसश्चैव ब्राह्मणः पङ्क्तिदूषकः
A brāhmaṇa dominated by darkness or passion is a corrupter of the line of guests.
निन्दितानाचरन्त्येते वर्जनीयाः प्रयत्नतः
Those who practice condemned acts—these must be diligently avoided.
संनिपात्य द्विजान् सर्वान् साधुभिः संनिमन्त्रयेत्
Having assembled all the twice-born, he should invite them with virtuous people.
असंभवे परेद्युर्वा यथोक्तैर्लक्षणैर्युतान्
If it is not possible, then on the next day, those who possess the prescribed qualities.
अन्योन्यं मनसा ध्यात्वा संपतन्ति मनोजवाः
Meditating upon one another in their minds, they come together with the speed of thought.
वायुभूतास्तु तिष्ठन्ति भुक्त्वा यान्ति परां गतिम्
Having become like the wind, they remain, and after partaking, they attain the highest state.
वसेयुर्नियताः सर्वे ब्रह्मचर्यपरायणाः
All should remain disciplined, devoted to celibacy.
भारं मैथुनमध्वानं श्राद्धकृद् वर्जयेज्जपम्
The performer of śrāddha should avoid burdens, sexual intercourse, travel, and recitation.
स याति नरकं घोरं सूकरत्वां प्रायाति च
He goes to a terrible hell and is likely to be born as a pig.
स तस्मादधिकः पापी विष्ठाकीटो ऽभिजायते
He, being even more sinful, is born as a worm in excrement.
ब्रह्महत्यामवाप्नोति तिर्यग्योनौ च जायते
He incurs the sin of killing a brāhmaṇa and is born among animals.
भवन्ति पितरस्तस्य तं मासं पांशुभोजनाः
For that month, his ancestors subsist on food made of earth.
भवन्ति तस्य तन्मासं पितरो मलभोजनाः
For that month, his ancestors subsist on filth as food.
अक्रोधनः शौचपरः कर्ता चैव जितेन्द्रियः
He should be free from anger, devoted to purity, a doer of deeds, and one who has mastered his senses.
समूलानाहरेद् वारि दक्षिणाग्रान् सुनिर्मलान्
He should draw water from the south-facing tip, taking it up with its roots, and ensure it is very pure.
शुचिं देशं विविक्तं च गोमयेनोपलेपयेत्
He should smear with cow dung a clean and secluded place.
विविक्तेषु च तुष्यन्ति दत्तेन पितरः सदा
The ancestors are always pleased by offerings made in secluded places.
स्वामिभिस्तद् विहन्येत मोहाद् यत् क्रियते नरैः
Whatever is done by people out of delusion should be restrained by the masters.
सर्वाण्यस्वामिकान्याहुर्न हि तेषु परिग्रहः
They say that all things without an owner are not to be appropriated.
असुरोपहतं सर्वं तिलैः शुद्ध्यत्यजेन वा
Everything tainted by demons is purified by sesame seeds or by the touch of a pure person.
चोष्यपेयसमृद्धं च यथाशक्त्या प्रकल्पयेत्
He should prepare, according to his ability, abundant food and drink for sipping.
अभिगम्य यथामार्गं प्रयच्छेद् दन्तधावनम्
Having approached in the proper manner, he should offer a tooth-cleaning stick.
पात्रैरौदुम्बरैर्दद्याद् वैश्वदैवत्यपूर्वकम्
He should give, using vessels made of udumbara wood, with the Vaiśvadeva rite performed first.
पाद्यमाचमनीयं च संप्रयच्छेद् यथाक्रमम्
He should offer water for washing the feet and for sipping, in the proper order.
प्राङ्मुखान्यासनान्येषां त्रिदर्भोपहितानि च
He should arrange seats for them facing east, each furnished with three darbha grasses.
दक्षिणाग्रैकदर्भाणि प्रोक्षितानि तिलोदकैः
The darbha grasses, with their tips to the south, should be sprinkled with water mixed with sesame seeds.
आसध्वमिति संजल्पन् आसनास्ते पृथक् पृथक्
Saying, 'Be seated,' he should invite them, and the seats should be set apart, one for each.
