तस्मै हव्यं न दातव्यं न हि भस्मनि हूयते
One should not offer oblations to him, for indeed, offerings are not poured into ashes.
तथानृचे हविर्दत्त्वा न दाता लभते फलम्
Likewise, if an oblation is given to one who does not recite the Ṛc, the giver does not obtain the fruit.
तावतो ग्रसते प्रेत्य दीप्तान् स्थूलांस्त्वयोगुडान्
After death, he consumes as many blazing, coarse lumps as the number of such acts.
यत्रैते भुञ्जते हव्यं तद् भवेदासुर द्विजाः
Where these (unworthy ones) consume the offering, O twice-born, that becomes demonic.
स वै दुर्ब्राह्मणो नार्हः श्राद्धादिषु कदाचन
Such a wicked brāhmaṇa is never fit for śrāddha or similar rites.
बधबन्धोपजीवी च षडेते ब्रह्मबन्धवः
One who lives by slaughter or bondage—these six are merely brāhmaṇa-bandhus.
वेदविक्रायिणो ह्येते श्राद्धादिषु विगर्हिताः
Those who sell the Veda are indeed condemned in śrāddha and similar rites.
असमानान् याजयन्ति पतितास्ते प्रकीर्तिताः
Those who officiate for the unqualified are declared fallen.
अधीयते तथा वेदान् पतितास्ते प्रकीर्तिताः
Likewise, those who teach the Vedas (to the unqualified) are declared fallen.
कापालिकाः पाशुपताः पाषण्डा ये च तद्विधाः
Kāpālikas, Pāśupatas, Pāṣaṇḍas, and others of that kind—
न तस्य तद् भवेच्छ्राद्धं प्रेत्य चेह फलप्रदम्
For him, that śrāddha does not yield results here or after death.
मिथ्याश्रमी च ते विप्रा विज्ञेयाः पङ्क्तिदूषकाः
Those brāhmaṇas who falsely claim an āśrama should be known as defilers of the line.
विद्धप्रजननश्चैव स्तेनः क्लीबो ऽथ नास्तिकः
One who begets children with a widow, a thief, an impotent man, or an atheist—
आगारदाही कुण्डाशी सोमविक्रयिणो द्विजाः
A house-burner, one who eats from a pit, and twice-born who sell Soma—
पौनर्भवः कुसीदी च तथा नक्षत्रदर्शकः
One born of remarriage, a usurer, and likewise an astrologer—
हीनाङ्गश्चातिरिक्ताङ्गो ह्यवकीर्णिस्तथैव च
One with a defective or excessive limb, and one who has scattered his seed—
मित्रध्रुक् पिशुनश्चैव नित्यं भार्यानुवर्तकः
A betrayer of friends, a slanderer, and one always subservient to his wife—
गोत्रभिद् भ्रष्टशौचश्च काण्डस्पृष्टस्तथैव च
One who breaks the lineage, who has lost purity, or who has touched a stalk (of barley or sacrificial grass)—
समुद्रयायी कृतहा तथा समयभेदकः
One who travels across the sea, a murderer, and one who breaks agreements—
द्विजनिन्दारतश्चैते वर्ज्याः श्राद्धादिकर्मसु
And those who delight in reviling twice-borns—these are to be excluded from śrāddha and similar rites.
मित्रध्रुक् कुहकश्चैव विशेषात् पङ्क्तिदूषकाः
A betrayer of friends, a deceiver, and especially those who corrupt the line of guests—
ब्रह्मभावनिरस्ताश्च वर्जनीयाः प्रयत्नतः
And those who have abandoned contemplation of Brahman must be diligently avoided.
महायज्ञविहीनश्च ब्राह्मणः पङ्क्तिदूषकः
A brāhmaṇa who neglects the great sacrifices is a corrupter of the line of guests.
तामसो राजसश्चैव ब्राह्मणः पङ्क्तिदूषकः
A brāhmaṇa dominated by darkness or passion is a corrupter of the line of guests.
निन्दितानाचरन्त्येते वर्जनीयाः प्रयत्नतः
Those who practice condemned acts—these must be diligently avoided.
संनिपात्य द्विजान् सर्वान् साधुभिः संनिमन्त्रयेत्
Having assembled all the twice-born, he should invite them with virtuous people.
असंभवे परेद्युर्वा यथोक्तैर्लक्षणैर्युतान्
If it is not possible, then on the next day, those who possess the prescribed qualities.
अन्योन्यं मनसा ध्यात्वा संपतन्ति मनोजवाः
Meditating upon one another in their minds, they come together with the speed of thought.
वायुभूतास्तु तिष्ठन्ति भुक्त्वा यान्ति परां गतिम्
Having become like the wind, they remain, and after partaking, they attain the highest state.
वसेयुर्नियताः सर्वे ब्रह्मचर्यपरायणाः
All should remain disciplined, devoted to celibacy.
