तस्माद् भोगापवर्गार्थं श्राद्धं कुर्युर्द्विजातयः
Therefore, for the sake of enjoyment and liberation, the twice-born should perform śrāddha.
पुत्रजन्मादिषु श्राद्धं पार्वणं पर्वणि स्मृतम्
Śrāddha performed at the time of a son's birth and similar occasions is called 'pārvaṇa' on festival days.
एकोद्दिष्टादि विज्ञेयं वृद्धिश्राद्धं तु पार्वणम्
Śrāddha for a single ancestor and similar rites are to be known as 'ekoddiṣṭa', while śrāddha for prosperity is 'pārvaṇa'.
यात्रायां षष्ठमाख्यातं तत्प्रयत्नेन पालयेत्
On the occasion of a journey, the sixth day is prescribed; this should be observed with care.
दैविकं चाष्टमं श्राद्धं यत्कृत्वा मुच्यते भयात्
The eighth day śrāddha for the gods, when performed, frees one from fear.
देशानां च विशेषेण भवेत् पुण्यमनन्तकम्
Especially in certain regions, the merit obtained is endless.
गायन्ति पितरो गाथां कीर्तयन्ति मनीषिणः
The ancestors sing a verse, and the wise proclaim it.
तेषां तु समवेतानां यद्येको ऽपि गायां व्रजेत्
If even one among those assembled goes to Gaya,
तारिताः पितरस्तेन स याति परमां गतिम्
By him, the ancestors are liberated, and he attains the highest state.
वाराणस्यां विशेषेण यत्र देवः स्वयं हरः
Especially in Varanasi, where the god Hara himself resides,
कुरुक्षेत्रे च कुब्जाम्रे भृगुतुङ्गे महालये
And in Kurukshetra, Kubjamra, Bhrigutunga, and the great shrine,
सरस्वत्यां विशेषेण पुष्करेषु विशेषतः
Especially on the Sarasvati, and particularly at Pushkara,
वेत्रवत्यां विपाशायां गोदावर्यां विशेषतः
On the banks of the Vetravati, Vipasha, and especially the Godavari,
नदीनां चैव तीरेषु तुष्यन्ति पितरः सदा
The ancestors are always satisfied on the banks of rivers.
गौधूमैश्च तिलैर्मुद्गैर्मासं प्रीणयते पितॄन्
By offering wheat, sesame seeds, and mung beans, one satisfies the ancestors for a month.
विदार्याश्च भरण्डाश्च श्राद्धकाले प्रादपयेत्
At the time of the śrāddha, one should also provide vidāri and bharaṇḍa roots.
दद्याच्छ्राद्धे प्रयत्नेन शृङ्गाटककशेरुकान्
With care, one should give śṛṅgāṭaka and kaśeruka at the śrāddha.
औरभ्रेणाथ चतुरः शाकुनेनेह पञ्च तु
With sheep’s meat, four months; with bird’s meat, five months here.
अष्टावेणस्य मांसेन रौरवेण नवैव तु
With goat’s meat, eight months; with raurava meat, indeed nine.
शशकूर्मर्योर्मांसेन मासानेकादशैव तु
With hare or tortoise meat, the satisfaction lasts for eleven months.
वार्ध्रोणसस्य मांसेन तृप्तिर्द्वादशवार्षिकी
With vārdhroṇa meat, satisfaction endures for twelve years.
आनन्त्यायैव कल्पन्ते मुन्यन्नानि च सर्वशः
The food of sages, in every form, is considered to grant endless benefit.
दद्याच्छ्राद्धे प्रयत्नेन तदस्याक्षयमुच्यते
Whatever is given at the śrāddha with care is said to be imperishable.
कूष्माण्डालाबुवार्ताकान् भूस्तृणं सुरसं तथा
One should avoid pumpkin, bottle gourd, eggplant, grass, and surasa at the śrāddha.
राजमाषांस्तथा क्षीरं माहिषं च विवर्जयेत्
One should also avoid royal black gram and buffalo milk.
वर्जयेत् सर्वयत्नेन श्राद्धकाले द्विजोत्तमः
O best of twice-born, one should avoid all these with utmost care at the time of śrāddha.
पिण्डान्वाहार्यकं श्राद्धं कुर्यात् सौम्यमनाः शुचिः
With a gentle mind and purity, one should perform the śrāddha with offerings of balls of food and cooked rice.
तीर्थं तद् हव्यकव्यानां प्रदाने चातिथिः स्मृतः
In the giving of offerings to gods and ancestors, the guest is regarded as a sacred ford.
व्रतिनो नियमस्थाश्च ऋतुकालाभिगामिनः
Those who are observant of vows, established in discipline, and approach at the proper season—
बह्वृचश्च त्रिसौपर्णस्त्रिमधुर्वाथ यो भवेत्
One who knows many Ṛgvedic hymns, the trisauparṇa, the trimadhur, or who is so qualified—
