चतुर्दशीं वर्जयित्वा प्रशस्ता ह्युत्तरोत्तराः
Except on the fourteenth day, each subsequent day is indeed praiseworthy.
तिस्त्रश्चान्वष्टकाः पुण्या माघी पञ्चदशी तथा
Three Anvaṣṭakā days are auspicious, as is the fifteenth day in Māgha.
शस्यापाकश्राद्धकाला नित्याः प्रोक्ता दिने दिने
The proper times for cooked rice offerings to the ancestors are said to be constant, day by day.
बान्धवानां च मरणे नारकी स्यादतो ऽन्यथा
If not performed at the death of relatives, one becomes subject to hellish suffering.
अयने विषुवे चैव व्यतीपाते ऽप्यनन्तकम्
Also at the solstices, equinoxes, and during eclipses, there is no end to the merit.
नक्षत्रेषु च सर्वेषु कार्यं काम्यं विशेषतः
On all lunar mansions, especially for desired aims, it should be performed.
अपत्यमथ रोहिण्यां सौम्ये तु ब्रह्मवर्चसम्
A child is obtained under Rohiṇī; under Saumya, brilliance of Brahman.
पुनर्वसौ तथा भूमिं श्रियं पुष्ये तथैव च
Under Punarvasu, land; under Puṣya, likewise, prosperity.
अर्यम्णे तु धनं विन्द्यात् फाल्गुन्यां पापनाशनम्
Under Aryaman, one attains wealth; under Phālgunī, destruction of sin.
वाणिज्यसिद्धिं स्वातौ तु विशाखासु सुवर्णकम्
Success in trade under Svāti, and gold under Viśākhā.
मूले कृषिं लभेद् यानसिद्धिमाप्ये समुद्रतः
Under Mūla, one obtains agriculture, and success in travel by sea.
श्रविष्ठायां तथा कामान् वारुणे च परं बलम्
Under Śraviṣṭhā, desires are fulfilled; under Vāruṇī, great strength.
याम्ये ऽथ जीवनं तत् स्याद्यदि श्राद्धं प्रयच्छति
Under Yāmyā, life is obtained, if the śrāddha is offered.
कौजे सर्वत्र विजयं सर्वान् कामान् बुधस्य तु
Under Kauja, victory in all things; under Budha, all desires.
शमैश्वरे लभेदायुः प्रतिपत्सु सुतान् शुभान्
Under Śama and Īśvara, one obtains long life; on Pratipat, auspicious sons.
पशून्क्षुद्रांश्चतुर्थ्यां तु पञ्चम्यांशोभनान् सुतान्
On the fourth day, small animals; on the fifth, excellent sons.
अष्टम्यामपि वाणिज्यं लभते श्राद्धदः सदा
On the eighth day, one who performs a śrāddha always obtains success in trade.
एकादश्यां तथा रूप्यं ब्रह्मवर्चस्विनः सुतान्
On the eleventh day, he gains silver and sons endowed with the brilliance of Brahman.
पञ्चदश्यां सर्वकामानाप्नोति श्राद्धदः सदा
On the fifteenth day, one who performs a śrāddha always attains all desires.
शस्त्रेण तु हतानां वै तत्र श्राद्धं प्रकल्पयेत्
For those who have been slain by weapons, a śrāddha should be performed there.
तस्माद् भोगापवर्गार्थं श्राद्धं कुर्युर्द्विजातयः
Therefore, for the sake of enjoyment and liberation, the twice-born should perform śrāddha.
पुत्रजन्मादिषु श्राद्धं पार्वणं पर्वणि स्मृतम्
Śrāddha performed at the time of a son's birth and similar occasions is called 'pārvaṇa' on festival days.
एकोद्दिष्टादि विज्ञेयं वृद्धिश्राद्धं तु पार्वणम्
Śrāddha for a single ancestor and similar rites are to be known as 'ekoddiṣṭa', while śrāddha for prosperity is 'pārvaṇa'.
यात्रायां षष्ठमाख्यातं तत्प्रयत्नेन पालयेत्
On the occasion of a journey, the sixth day is prescribed; this should be observed with care.
दैविकं चाष्टमं श्राद्धं यत्कृत्वा मुच्यते भयात्
The eighth day śrāddha for the gods, when performed, frees one from fear.
देशानां च विशेषेण भवेत् पुण्यमनन्तकम्
Especially in certain regions, the merit obtained is endless.
गायन्ति पितरो गाथां कीर्तयन्ति मनीषिणः
The ancestors sing a verse, and the wise proclaim it.
तेषां तु समवेतानां यद्येको ऽपि गायां व्रजेत्
If even one among those assembled goes to Gaya,
तारिताः पितरस्तेन स याति परमां गतिम्
By him, the ancestors are liberated, and he attains the highest state.
वाराणस्यां विशेषेण यत्र देवः स्वयं हरः
Especially in Varanasi, where the god Hara himself resides,
