तिलोदकैः पितॄन् भक्त्या स्वसूत्रोक्तविधानतः
With water mixed with sesame seeds, he should satisfy the ancestors with devotion, following the procedure prescribed in his own Veda.
देवर्षोस्तर्पयेद् धीमानुदकाञ्जलिभिः पितन्
The wise man should satisfy the divine sages and ancestors with handfuls of water.
प्राचीनावीती पित्र्ये तु स्वेन तीर्थेन भावतः
For ancestral rites, with the sacred thread over the right shoulder, he should use his own tīrtha with proper feeling.
स्वैर्मन्त्रैरर्चयेद् देवान् पुष्पैः पत्रैरथाम्बुभिः
With his own mantras, he should worship the gods with flowers, leaves, or water.
अन्यांश्चाभिमतान् देवान् भक्त्या चाक्रोधनो ऽत्वरः
He should also worship other desired deities with devotion, free from anger and without haste.
आपो वा देवताः सर्वास्तेन सम्यक् समर्चिताः
All waters are deities; thus, by this, they are properly worshipped.
नमस्कारेण पुष्पाणि विन्यसेद् वै पृथक् पृथक्
With reverence, he should place the flowers separately, one by one.
तस्मादनादिमध्यान्तं नित्यमाराधयेद्धरिम्
Therefore, one should always worship Hari, who is without beginning, middle, or end.
नैताभ्यां सदृशो मन्त्रो वेदेषूक्तश्चतुर्ष्वपि
There is no mantra in the four Vedas equal to these two.
तदात्मा तन्मनाः शान्तस्तद्विष्णोरिति मन्त्रतः
With self identified with that, mind absorbed in that, and peaceful, he should recite the mantra 'That is Viṣṇu.'
आराधयेन्महादेवं भावपूतो महेश्वरम्
He should worship the great god Maheśvara, purified in mind.
ईशानेनाथ वा रुद्रैस्त्र्यम्बकेन समाहितः
With concentration, he should use the Īśāna, Rudra, or Tryambaka mantras.
उक्त्वा नमः शिवायेति मन्त्रेणानेन योजयेत्
Having said 'Salutations to Śiva' with this mantra, he should apply it.
निवेदयीत स्वात्मानं यो ब्रह्माणमितीश्वरम्
He should offer his own self to the Lord, who is declared as Brahman.
ध्यायीत देवमीशानं व्योममध्यगतं शिवम्
One should meditate upon the divine Lord, Shiva, who dwells in the midst of the sky.
कुर्यात् पञ्च महायज्ञान् गृहं गत्वा समाहितः
Having entered the house with a concentrated mind, one should perform the five great sacrifices.
मानुष्यं ब्रह्मयज्ञं च पञ्च यज्ञान् प्रचक्षते
They declare that the human sacrifice and the Brahma sacrifice are among the five sacrifices.
कृत्वा मनुष्ययज्ञं वै ततः स्वाध्यायमाचरेत्
Having performed the human sacrifice, one should then engage in self-study.
कुशपुञ्जे समासीनः कुशपाणिः समाहितः
Seated upon a bundle of kusa grass, holding kusa in hand, with focused mind,
वैश्वदेवं ततः कुर्याद् देवयज्ञः स वै स्मृतः
One should then perform the Vaisvadeva rite; this is known as the sacrifice to the gods.
शालाग्नौ तत्र देवान्नं विधिरेष सनातनः
In the household fire, food for the gods is offered; this is the eternal ordinance.
भूतयज्ञः स वै ज्ञेयो भूतिदः सर्वदेहिनाम्
This is known as the sacrifice to beings, which grants sustenance to all embodied creatures.
दद्याद् भूमौ बलिं त्वन्नं पक्षिभ्यो ऽथ द्विजोत्तमः
One should offer food as a bali on the ground to birds, O best of twice-born.
भूतयज्ञस्त्वयं नित्यं सायं प्रातर्विधीयते
This sacrifice to beings is to be performed daily, both in the evening and in the morning.
नित्यश्राद्धं तदुद्दिष्टं पितृयज्ञो गतिप्रदः
The daily śrāddha is prescribed as the ancestral sacrifice, which bestows progress.
वेदतत्त्वार्थविदुषे द्विजायैवोपपादयेत्
One should provide it to a twice-born who knows the true meaning of the Vedas.
मनोवाक्कर्मभिः शान्तमागतं स्वगृह ततः
Having returned to one's own house with mind, speech, and actions tranquil,
दद्यादतिथये नित्यं बुध्येत परमेश्वरम्
One should always give to the guest and recognize the Supreme Lord.
पुष्कलं हन्तकारं तु तच्चतुर्गुणमुच्यते
Abundant and destructive, it is said to be fourfold.
अभ्यागतान् यथाशक्ति पूजयेदतिथिं यथा
One should honor arriving guests according to one's ability, as is proper for a guest.
