ऐश्वरी तु पराशक्तिस्तत्त्वत्रयसमुद्भवा
The divine power is the supreme energy, arising from the three principles.
प्राङ्मुखः सततं विप्रः संध्योपासनमाचरेत्
The brāhmaṇa should always perform Sandhyā worship facing east.
यदन्यत् कुरुते किञ्चिन्न तस्य फलमाप्नुयात्
Whatever else one does, he does not obtain the fruit of it.
उपास्य विधिवत् संध्यां प्राप्ताः पूर्वं परां गतिम्
Having duly worshipped the twilight (Sandhyā), they attained the highest state in former times.
विहाय संध्याप्रणतिं स याति नरकायुतम्
Abandoning the reverence to Sandhyā, he goes to a multitude of hells.
उपासितो भवेत् तेन देवो योगतनुः परः
By worshipping thus, the supreme deity of yogic form is attained.
सावित्ररिं वै जपेद् विद्वान् प्राङ्मुखः प्रयतः स्थितः
A learned one should recite the Sāvitrī hymn, facing east, standing with concentration.
मन्त्रैस्तु विविधैः सौरेरृग्यजुः सामसंभवैः
With various mantras arising from the Ṛg, Yajur, and Sāma Vedas relating to the Sun,
कुर्वोत प्रणतिं भूमौ मूर्ध्ना तेनैव मन्त्रतः
He should offer obeisance on the ground with his head, using those very mantras.
नमस्ते घृणिने तुभ्यं सूर्याय ब्रह्मरूपिणे
Salutations to you, O radiant one, O Sun, O embodiment of Brahman.
पुरुषः सन्महो ऽतस्त्वां प्रणमामि कपर्दिनम्
As a person of true greatness, therefore I bow to you, O Kapardin.
नमो रुद्राय सूर्याय त्वामहं शरणं गतः
Salutations to Rudra, to the Sun; I have taken refuge in you.
नमो नमस्ते रुद्राय त्वामहं शरणं गतः
Salutations, salutations to Rudra; I have taken refuge in you.
अम्बिकापतये तुभ्यमुमायाः पतये नमः
Salutations to you, Lord of Ambikā, salutations to the Lord of Umā.
विलोहिताय भर्गाय सहस्राक्षाय ते नमः
Salutations to the red-hued, to Bharga, to the thousand-eyed one.
नमस्ते वज्रहस्ताय त्र्यम्बकाय नमो ऽस्तु ते
Salutations to you, wielder of the thunderbolt, O Tryambaka; salutations to you.
हिरण्मयं गृहे गुप्तमात्मानं सर्वदेहिनाम्
The golden one, hidden in the house, the self of all embodied beings.
विश्वं पशुपतिं भीमं नरनारीशरीरिणम्
The Lord of all, the terrible one, who has the bodies of both man and woman.
उग्राय सर्वभक्ताय त्वां प्रपद्ये सदैव हि
To the fierce one, the devotee of all, I always take refuge in you.
प्रातः काले ऽथ मध्याह्ने नमस्कुर्याद् दिवाकरम्
In the morning and at midday, one should bow to the Sun.
प्रदेयं सूर्यहृदयं ब्रह्मणा तु प्रदर्शितम्
The Sūrya-hṛdaya, revealed by Brahmā, is to be imparted.
ब्राह्मणानां हितं पुण्यमृषिसङ्घैर्निषेवितम्
It is beneficial and holy for Brāhmaṇas, practiced by groups of sages.
प्रज्वाल्य विह्निं विधिवज्जुहुयाज्जातवेदसम्
Having kindled the sacred fire according to the proper method, one should offer oblations to Jātavedas.
प्राप्यानुज्ञां विशेषेण जुहुयुर्वा यताविधि
Having especially obtained permission, one should offer oblations as prescribed.
अनन्यमानसो वह्निं जुहुयात् संयतेन्द्रियः
With mind undistracted, and senses restrained, one should offer into the fire.
राक्षसं तद्भवेत् सर्वं नामुत्रेह फलप्रदम्
Otherwise, all of that becomes demonic, yielding no results here or hereafter.
दद्यात् पुष्पादिकं तेषां वृद्धांश्चैवाभिवादयेत्
One should offer them flowers and the like, and respectfully greet the elders among them.
वेदाभ्यासं ततः कुर्यात् प्रयत्नाच्छक्तितो द्विजः
Then, a twice-born should diligently study the Vedas to the best of his ability.
वैदिकांश्चैव निगमान् वेदाङ्गानि वेशिषतः
And especially the Vedic texts and the limbs of the Veda.
साधयेद् विविधानर्थान् कुटुम्बार्थे ततो द्विजः
Thereafter, the twice-born should accomplish various aims for the sake of his family.
