उदुम्बरमलाबुं च जग्ध्वा पतति वै द्विजः
A twice-born who eats udumbara fruit or bottle gourd surely falls (from righteousness).
अनुपाकृतमांसं च देवान्नानि हवींषि च
One should avoid uncooked meat, offerings to the gods, and sacrificial oblations.
नीपं कपित्थं प्लक्षं च प्रयत्नेन विवर्जयेत्
One should diligently avoid nipa, kapittha, and plaksha fruits.
रात्रौ च तिलसंबद्धं प्रयत्नेन दधि त्यजेत्
One should carefully give up curd mixed with sesame seeds at night.
क्रियादुष्टं भावदुष्टमसत्संसर्गि वर्जयेत्
One should avoid food that is spoiled by improper action, by nature, or by contact with the impure.
श्वाघ्रातं च पुनः सिद्धं चण्डालावेक्षितं तथा
Also, food smelled by a dog, food cooked again, or seen by an outcaste should be avoided.
अनर्चितं पुर्युं षितं पर्यायान्नं च नित्यशः
Food that is not offered, that is stale, or that is leftover should always be avoided.
मनुष्यैरप्यवघ्रातं कुष्ठिना स्पृष्टमेव च
Food smelled by humans or touched by a leper should also be avoided.
मलबद्वाससा वापि परवासो ऽथ वर्जयेत्
One should avoid food that has been touched by someone wearing dirty clothes or by another person.
आविकं सन्धिनीक्षीरमपेयं मनुरब्रवीत्
Manu has declared that sheep's milk and milk from a newly calved animal should not be drunk.
कुररं च चकोरं च जालपादं च कोकिलम्
One should not eat the curlew, the chakora, the net-footed bird, or the cuckoo.
कपोतं टिट्टिभं चैव ग्रामकुक्कुटमेव च
Nor should one eat the pigeon, the lapwing, or the village rooster.
शृगालं मर्कटं चैव गर्दभं च न भक्षयेत्
One should not eat the jackal, the monkey, or the donkey.
जलेचरान् स्थलचरान् प्राणिनश्चेति धारणा
This is the rule regarding creatures living in water and on land.
भक्ष्याः पञ्चनखा नित्यं मनुराह प्रिजापतिः
Manu, the lord of creatures, said that five-clawed animals are always fit to be eaten.
निवेद्य देवताभ्यस्तु ब्राह्मणेभ्यस्तु नान्यथा
But only after offering them to the deities and to the Brahmins, and not otherwise.
वाध्रीणसं बकं भक्ष्यं मीनहंसपराजिताः
The vādhrīṇa bird, the crane, and the fish-eating goose are to be eaten, having been defeated.
मत्स्याश्चैते समुद्दिष्टा भक्षणाय द्विजोत्तमाः
These fish, O best of twice-born, are declared as fit for eating.
यथाविधि नियुक्तं च प्राणानामपि चात्यये
According to prescribed rule, even at the peril of life, it is permitted.
औषधार्थमशक्तौ वा नियोगाद् यज्ञकारणात्
For medicinal purposes, or when unable, or by command, or for the sake of sacrifice.
यावन्ति पशुरोमाणि तावतो नरकान् व्रजेत्
For as many hairs as are on the animal, so many hells does one enter.
द्विजातीनामनालोक्यं नित्यं मद्यमिति स्थितिः
For twice-born, intoxicating drink is always to be avoided—this is the rule.
पीत्वा पतति कर्मभ्यस्त्वसंभाष्यो भवेद् द्विजः
Having drunk, he falls from his duties and becomes unfit for association, O twice-born.
नाधिकारी भवेत् तावद् यावद् तन्न जहात्यधः
He is not qualified so long as he does not completely abandon that below.
अपेयानि च विप्रो वै तथा चेद् याति रौरवम्
If a Brāhmaṇa drinks what is forbidden, he goes to Raurava hell.
तदाचक्ष्वाखिलं कर्म येन मुच्येत बन्धनात्
Now tell in full the actions by which one is released from bondage.
अहन्यहनि कर्तव्यं ब्राह्मणानां क्रमाद् विधिम्
Day by day, the prescribed duties are to be performed by Brāhmaṇas in order.
कायक्लेशं तदुद्भूतं ध्यायीत मनसेश्वरम्
He should contemplate the Lord of the mind, born from the hardship of bodily effort.
स्नायान्नदीषु सुद्धासु शौचं कृत्वा यथाविधि
He should bathe in pure rivers, having performed purification according to rule.
तस्मात् सर्वप्रयत्नेन प्रातः स्नानं समाचरेत्
Therefore, with all effort, one should perform the morning bath.
