नोत्तरेदनुपस्पृश्य नाप्सु रेतः समुत्सृजेत्
One should not clean oneself after urination without rinsing, nor discharge semen in water.
चैत्यं वृक्षं न वै छिन्द्यान्नाप्सु ष्ठीवनमाचरेत्
One should not cut down a sacred tree, nor spit in water.
तुषाङ्गारकरीषं वा नाधितिष्ठेत् कदाचन
One should never sit upon husks, embers, or dung.
न चैनं पादतः कुर्यान्मुखेन न धमेद् बुधः
Nor should one touch it with the foot, nor blow upon it with the mouth, the wise say.
अग्नौ न च क्षिपेदग्निं नाद्भिः प्रशमयेत् तथा
One should not throw fire into fire, nor extinguish fire with water.
अपण्यं कूटपण्यं वा विक्रये न प्रयोजयेत्
One should not use unfit or counterfeit goods for sale.
पुण्यस्थानोदकस्थाने सीमान्तं वा कृषेन्न तु
One should not mark boundaries in places of merit or at water sources.
परस्परं पशून् व्यालान् पक्षिणो नावबोधयेत्
One should not disturb animals, wild beasts, or birds among each other.
सायंप्रातर् गृहद्वारान् भिक्षार्थं नावघट्टयेत्
One should not knock at house doors in the evening or morning seeking alms.
विगृह्य वादं कुद्वारप्रवेशं च विवर्जयेत्
One should avoid disputes and entering through improper doors.
स्वमग्निं नैव हस्तेन स्पृशेन्नाप्सु चिरं वसेत्
One should not touch one's own fire with the hand, nor remain long in water.
मुखे नैव धमेदग्निं मुखादग्निरजायत
One should not blow upon fire with the mouth, for fire arose from the mouth.
नैकश्चरेत् सभां विप्रः समवायं च वर्जयेत्
A Brahmin should not go alone to an assembly, nor join a gathering.
न वीजयेद् वा वस्त्रेण न देवायतने स्वपेत्
One should not fan oneself with cloth, nor sleep in a temple.
न व्याधिदूषितैर्वापि न शूद्रैः पतितेन वा
Nor with those afflicted by disease, nor with Shudras or the fallen.
नाग्निगोब्राह्मणादीनामन्तरेण व्रजेत् क्वचित्
One should never pass between fire, cow, or Brahmin.
न निन्देद् योगिनः सिद्धान् व्रतिनो वायतींस्तथा
One should not revile yogis, siddhas, ascetics, or those who have taken vows.
नाक्रामेत् कामतश्छायां ब्राह्मणानां च गोरपि
One should not step upon the shadow of Brahmins or cows out of desire.
नाङ्गारभस्मकेशादिष्वधितिष्ठेत् कदाचन
One should never sit upon embers, ashes, or hair.
न भक्षयेदभक्ष्याणि नापेयं च पिबेद् द्विजः
A twice-born should not eat what is forbidden, nor drink what is unfit.
स शूद्रयोनिं व्रजति यस्तु भुङ्क्ते ह्यनापदि
He who eats inappropriately, without necessity, enters the womb of a Śūdra.
जीवन्नेव भवेच्छूद्रो मृतः श्वा चाभिजायते
While living, he becomes a Śūdra; after death, he is born as a dog.
यस्यान्नेनोदरस्थेन मृतस्तद्योनिमाप्नुयात्
One who dies with another's food in his belly attains the birth corresponding to that food.
गणान्नं गणिकान्नं च षण्ढान्नं चैव वर्जयेत्
One should avoid food from a group, from a courtesan, and from a eunuch.
गान्धर्वलोहकारान्नं सूतकान्नं च वर्जयेत्
One should also avoid food from musicians, metalworkers, and from women after childbirth.
पौनर्भवच्छत्रिकयोरभिशस्तस्य चैव हि
Food from remarried women, from umbrella-makers, and from those who are cursed should be avoided.
चिकित्सकस्य चैवान्नं पुंश्चल्या दण्डिकस्य च
Food from a physician, from a prostitute, and from a stick-bearer should also be avoided.
सोमविक्रयिणश्चान्नं श्वपाकस्य विशेषतः
Food from a seller of Soma, and especially from one who cooks for dogs, should be avoided.
उत्सृष्टस्य कदर्यस्य तथैवोच्छिष्टभोजिनः
Food abandoned by a miser, and likewise food eaten by one who consumes leftovers, should be avoided.
भीतस्य रुदितस्यान्नमवक्रुष्टं परिक्षुतम्
Food of one who is frightened, who has cried, who is insulted, or who is exhausted should be avoided.
