मुक्त्वा समुद्रयोर्देशं नान्यत्र निवसेद् द्विजः
Except for the region between the two oceans, a twice-born should not reside elsewhere.
पुण्याश्च विश्रुता नद्यस्तत्र वा निवसेद् द्विजः
There, in the land of renowned holy rivers, a twice-born may reside.
नान्यत्र निवसेत् पुण्यं नान्त्यजग्रामसन्निधौ
One should not live elsewhere in a sacred place, nor near a village of outcastes.
न मूर्खैर्नावलिप्तैश्च नान्त्यैर्नान्त्यावसायिभिः
Not with the ignorant, nor with the arrogant, nor with outcastes, nor with those who live among outcastes.
याजनाध्यापने योनिस्तथैव सहभोजनम्
Officiating at sacrifices, teaching, sexual union, and eating together—
एकादश समुद्दिष्टा दोषाः साङ्कर्यसंज्ञिताः
Eleven faults are declared, known as the mixing of castes.
तस्मात् सर्वप्रयत्नेन साङ्कर्यं परिवर्जयेत्
Therefore, one should avoid the mixing of castes by every possible effort.
भस्मना कृतमर्यादा न तेषां संकरो भवेत्
Where a boundary is made with ashes, there is no mixing among them.
द्वारेण स्तम्भमार्गेण षड्भिः पङ्क्तिर्विभिद्यते
A row is divided in six ways: by a door, by a pillar, or by a pathway.
न संवदेत् सूतके च न कञ्चिन्मर्मणि स्पृशेत्
One should not converse during impurity, nor touch anyone at a vital spot.
परस्मै कथयेद् विद्वान् शशिनं वा कदाचन
A learned person should never reveal the moon to another.
आत्मनः प्रतिकूलानि परेषां न समाचरेत्
One should not do to others what is disagreeable to oneself.
नोदक्यामभिभाषेत नाशुचिं वा द्विजोत्तमः
A foremost twice-born should not speak to one who has not performed the water-offering, nor to one who is impure.
वेदनिन्दां देवनिन्दां प्रयत्नेन विवर्जयेत्
One should diligently avoid reviling the Veda or the gods.
न तस्य निष्कृतिर्दृष्टा शास्त्रेष्विह मुनीश्वराः
For such a person, no expiation is found in the scriptures, O best of sages.
कल्पकोटिशतं साग्रं रौरवे पच्यते नरः
A man is cooked in Raurava for a full hundred crore aeons.
कर्णौ पिधाय गन्तव्यं न चैतानवलोकयेत्
One should cover one's ears and depart, not looking at these things.
विवादं स्वजनैः सार्धं न कुर्याद् वै कदाचन
One should never engage in disputes with one's own people.
सतेनतुल्यदोषः स्यान्मिथ्या द्विर्देषवान् भवेत्
By doing so, one becomes equally at fault, and incurs double blame through falsehood.
तानिपुत्रान् पशून्घ्निन्ति तेषां मिथ्याभिशंसिनाम्
They call their own sons and cattle killers, those who falsely accuse others.
दृष्टं विशोधनं वृद्धैर्नास्ति मिथ्याभिशंसने
The elders have declared that there is no expiation for false accusation.
तिरोहितं वाससा वा नादर्शान्तरगामिनम्
That which is hidden by clothing or not visible within, one should not point out.
नाशुचिः सूर्यसोमादीन् ग्रहानालोकयेद् बुधः
A wise person who is impure should not gaze at the sun, the moon, or the planets.
नाभिभाषेत च परमुच्छिष्टो वावगुण्ठितः
One should not speak to another while defiled by food, or with the mouth covered.
नामुक्तबन्धनाङ्गां वा नोन्मत्तं मत्तमेव वा
Nor to one whose limbs are unbound, or who is mad, or intoxicated.
क्षुवन्तीं जृम्भमाणां वा नासनस्थां यथासुखम्
Nor to a woman who is sneezing, yawning, or sitting as she pleases.
न लङ्घयेच्च मूत्रं वा नाधितिष्ठेत् कदाचन
One should not step over urine, nor ever stand upon it.
नोच्छिष्टं वा मधु घृतं न च कृष्णाजिनं हविः
One should not offer food that is defiled, nor honey, ghee, or sacrificial oblations placed on black antelope skin.
न च क्रोधवशं गच्छेद् द्वेषं रागं च वर्जयेत्
One should not give in to anger, and should avoid hatred and attachment.
ईर्ष्यां मदं तथा शोकं मोहं च परिवर्जयेत्
One should also avoid envy, pride, grief, and delusion.
