पश्वादयस्ते विख्याता उत्पथग्राहिणो द्विजाः
Cattle and others, well known, are those who seize the wrong path, O twice-born.
ऊर्ध्वस्त्रोत इति प्रोक्तो देवसर्गस्तु सात्त्विकः
The creation called the upward stream is said to be the divine creation, characterized by sattva.
प्रकाशा बहिरन्तश्च स्वभावाद् देवसंज्ञिताः
Luminous within and without by their nature, they are designated as gods.
प्रादुरासीत् तदाव्यक्तादर्वाक्स्त्रोतस्तु साधकः
Then, from the unmanifest, the creation known as the downward stream appeared, which is effective.
दुः खोत्कटाः सत्त्वयुता मनुष्याः परिकीर्तिता
Humans, endowed with sattva but afflicted by intense suffering, are described.
तस्याभिध्यायतः सर्गं सर्गो भूतादिको ऽभवत्
From his contemplation, the creation beginning with the elements came into being.
इत्येते पञ्च कथिताः सर्गा वै द्विजपुङ्गवाः
Thus, O best of twice-born, these five creations have been described.
तन्मात्राणां द्वितीयस्तु भूतसर्गो हि स स्मृतः
The second, arising from the subtle elements, is known as the elemental creation.
इत्येष प्राकृतः सर्गः संभूतो ऽबुद्धिपूर्वकः
Thus, this natural creation has arisen, occurring without prior intelligence.
तिर्यक्स्त्रोतस्तु यः प्रोक्तस्तिर्यग्योन्यः स पञ्चमः
The creation called the horizontal stream, which is of various species, is the fifth.
ततोर्ऽवाक्स्त्रोतसां सर्गः सप्तमः स तु मानुषः
After that, the creation of those with a downward stream, which is human, is the seventh.
नवमश्चैव कौमारः प्राकृता वैकृतास्त्विमे
And the ninth is the creation of youths; these are the natural and the modified creations.
बुद्धिपूर्वं प्रवर्तन्ते मुख्याद्या मुनिपुङ्गवाः
O best of sages, the principal and other creations proceed with prior intelligence.
ऋभुं सनात्कुमारं च पूर्वमेव प्रजापतिः
The Lord previously created Rbhu and Sanatkumara.
ईश्वरासक्तमनसो न सृष्टौ दधिरे मतिम्
Their minds attached to the Lord, they did not direct their thoughts toward creation.
मुमोह मायया सद्यो मायिनः परमेष्ठिनः
Immediately, through the illusion of the supreme creator, they were deluded by his maya.
नारायणो महायोगी योगिचित्तानुरञ्जनः
Nārāyaṇa, the great yogi, delights in the minds of yogis.
स तप्यमानो भगवान् न किञ्चित् प्रतिपद्यत
That blessed Lord, though undergoing austerity, did not attain anything.
क्रोधाविष्टस्य नेत्राभ्यां प्रापतन्नश्रु बिन्दवः
From his eyes, filled with anger, drops of tears fell.
समुत्पन्नो महादेवः शरण्यो नीललोहितः
From them arose Mahādeva, the refuge, blue and red in hue.
यं प्रपश्यन्ति विद्वांसः स्वात्मस्थं परमेश्वरम्
Him, established in the Self, the supreme Lord, the wise behold.
ताम भगवान् ब्रह्मा सृजेमा विविधाः प्रजाः
That blessed Brahmā creates these various beings.
कपर्दिनो निरातङ्कांस्त्रिनेत्रान् नीललोहितान्
With matted hair, free from fear, three-eyed, blue and red in color.
प्रजाः स्त्रक्ष्ये जगन्नाथ सृज त्वमशुभाः प्रजाः
O Lord of the world, I shall create beings; you create the inauspicious beings.
स्थानाभिमानिनः सर्वान् गदतस्तान् निबोधत
Hear now of all those who preside over places, as I declare them.
नद्यः समुद्राः शैलाश्च वृक्षा वीरुध एव च
Rivers, oceans, mountains, trees, and also herbs.
अर्धमासाश्च मासाश्च अयनाब्दयुगादयः
Fortnights, months, solstices, years, and ages.
दक्षमत्रिं वसिष्ठं च धर्मं संकल्पमेव च
Dakṣa, Atri, Vasiṣṭha, Dharma, and also Saṃkalpa.
शिरसो ऽङ्गिरसं देवो हृदयाद् भृगुमेव च
From his head, the god Aṅgiras; from his heart, Bhṛgu.
संकल्पं चैव संकल्पात् सर्वलोकपितामहः
And Saṃkalpa from Saṃkalpa, the grandsire of all worlds.
