न सोपानत्पादुको वा छत्री वा नान्तरिक्षके
Not on steps, nor while wearing shoes, nor while holding an umbrella, nor in mid-air.
न देवदेवालययोरपामपि कदाचन
Never in temples of gods or at places of water.
प्रत्यादित्यं प्रत्यनलं प्रतिसोमं तथैव च
One should not perform it facing the sun, fire, or the moon.
कुर्यादतन्द्रितः शौचं विशुद्धैरुद्धृतोदकैः
One should carefully perform purification with clean water that has been drawn.
न मार्गान्नोषराद् देशाच्छौचशिष्टां परस्य च
One should not use water from roads, barren places, or that left over by another for purification.
उपस्पृशेत् ततो नित्यं पूर्वोक्तेन विधानतः
After that, one should always touch water as prescribed earlier.
आहूतो ऽध्ययनं कुर्याद् वीक्षमाणो गुरोर्मुखम्
When called, one should study while looking at the teacher's face.
आस्यतामिति चोक्तः सन्नासीताभिमुखं गुरोः
When told 'be seated,' one should sit facing the teacher.
नासीनो न च भुञ्जानो न तिष्ठन्न पराङ्मुखः
One should not sit, eat, or stand with one's back to the teacher.
गुरोस्तु चक्षुर्विषये न यथेष्टासनो भवेत्
Within the teacher's line of sight, one should not sit as one pleases.
न चैवास्यानुकुर्वोत गतिभाषणचेष्टितम्
Nor should one imitate the teacher's manner of sitting, speaking, or moving.
कर्णैं तत्र पिधातव्यौ गन्तव्यं वा ततो ऽन्यतः
There, one should cover the ears or go elsewhere.
न चैवास्योत्तरं ब्रूयात् स्थितो नासीत सन्निधौ
Nor should one reply to the teacher, nor remain standing or seated in his presence.
मार्जनं लेपनं नित्यमङ्गानां वै समाचरेत्
One should always perform cleansing and anointing of the limbs.
आक्रमेदासनं चास्य छायादीन् वा कदाचन
He should never step upon his teacher’s seat, nor upon his shadow, or the like.
अनापृच्छ्य न गन्तव्यं भवेत् प्रियहिते रतः
Without taking leave, one should not depart, especially when devoted to what is dear and beneficial.
वर्जयेत् सन्निधौ नित्यमवस्फोचनमेव च
He should always avoid making noise or spitting in the teacher’s presence.
आसीताधो गुरोः कूर्चे फलके वा समाहितः
He should sit below the teacher, on a mat or board, with his mind attentive.
धावन्तमनुधावेत गच्छन्तमनुगच्छति
He should follow when the teacher runs, and accompany him when he goes.
आसीत गुरुणा सार्धं शिलाफलकनौषु च
He should sit together with the teacher on stones or wooden seats.
प्रयुञ्जीत सदा वाचं मधुरां हितभाषिणीम्
He should always use gentle speech, speaking words that are sweet and beneficial.
अभ्यङ्गं चाञ्चनोपानच्छत्रधारणमेव च
He should perform oiling, fanning, carrying footwear, and holding an umbrella.
परोपघातं पैशुन्यं प्रयत्नेन विवर्जयेत्
He should carefully avoid harming others and slander.
आहरेद् यावदर्थानि भैक्ष्यं चाहरहश्चरेत्
He should collect only what is needed and seek alms daily.
अनृत्यदर्शो सततं भवेद् गीतादिनिः स्पृहः
He should always avoid watching dancing and be free from desire for singing and the like.
एकान्तमशुचिस्त्रीभिः शूद्रान्त्यैरभिभाषणम्
He should not converse in private with impure women or with those of the lowest castes.
कलापकर्षणस्नानं नाचरेद्धि कदाचन
He should never engage in wrestling, bathing, or the like for amusement.
मोहाद्वा यदि वा लोभात् त्यक्तेन पतितो भवेत्
If, out of delusion or greed, he takes what has been renounced, he falls from his state.
आददीत यतो ज्ञानं न तं द्रुह्येत् कदाचन
He should never harm the one from whom he has gained knowledge.
उत्पथप्रतिपन्नस्य मनुस्त्यागं समब्रवीत्
Manu has declared the abandonment of one who has taken to a wrong path.
