शुचौ देशे समासीनो भुक्त्वा च द्विरुपस्पृशेत्
Seated in a clean place, after eating, one should rinse the mouth twice.
ओष्ठावलमोकौ स्पृष्ट्वा वासो विपरिधाय च
Having touched the lips and the inside of the mouth, and having put on a garment anew,
ष्ठीवित्वाध्ययनारम्भे कासश्वासागमे तथा
At the commencement of study after spitting, or when coughing or breathing heavily,
संध्ययोरुभयोस्तद्वदाचान्तो ऽप्याचमेत् पुनः
Likewise, at both twilights, even if one has already rinsed, one should rinse again.
आचामेदश्रुपाते वा लोहितस्य तथैव च
One should rinse after shedding tears, and likewise after bleeding.
आचान्तो ऽप्याचमेत् सुप्त्वा सकृत्सकृदथान्यतः
Even after rinsing, one should rinse again after sleeping, once or repeatedly, and also after other occasions.
स्त्रीणामथात्मनः स्पर्शे नीवीं वा परिधाय च
After touching women or oneself, or after putting on a lower garment,
केशानां चात्मनः स्पर्शे वाससो ऽक्षालितस्य च
After touching one's own hair, or after wearing unwashed clothes,
शौचेप्सुः सर्वदाचामेदासीनः प्रागुदङ्मुखः
Desiring cleanliness, one should always rinse, seated, facing east or north.
अकृत्वा पादयोः शौचमाचान्तो ऽप्यशुचिर्भवेत्
Without washing the feet, even after rinsing, one remains impure.
न चैव वर्षधाराभिर्न तिष्ठन् नोद्धृतोदकैः
One should not rinse with rainwater, nor while standing, nor with water that has been drawn up.
न पादुकासनस्थो वा बहिर्जानुरथापि वा
Nor while sitting on sandals or a seat, nor with the knees outside, nor otherwise.
नावीक्षिताभिः फेनाद्यैरुपेताभिरथापि वा
Nor with water that is foamy or otherwise impure, nor with water that has been looked at by others.
न चैवाङ्गुलिभिः शब्दं न कुर्वन् नान्यमानसः
Nor making noise with the fingers, nor with a distracted mind.
न पाणिक्षुभिताभिर्वा न बहिष्कक्ष एव वा
Nor with hands agitated, nor outside the proper enclosure.
प्राशिताभिस्तथावैश्यः स्त्रीशूद्रौ स्पर्शतो ऽन्ततः
Nor with water that has been sipped by Vaiśyas, women, or Śūdras, even by touch.
अन्तराङ्गुष्ठदेशिन्यो पितॄणां तीर्थमुत्तमम्
The water between the thumb and forefinger is considered the highest for the ancestors.
अङ्गुल्यग्रे स्मृतं दैवं तदेवार्षं प्रकीर्तितम्
The water at the tips of the fingers is called 'divine'; that is also declared as 'āṛṣa' (of the seers).
तदेव सौमिकं तीर्थमेतज्ज्ञात्वा न मुह्यति
Knowing this, one does not become deluded; this alone is the auspicious sacred place.
कायेन वाथ दैवेन तु पित्र्येण वै द्विजाः
O twice-born, whether by the body, by fate, or by ancestral means—
संमृज्याङ्गुष्ठमूलेन मुखं वै समुपस्पृशेत्
One should cleanse and touch the mouth with the base of the thumb.
तर्जन्यङ्गुष्ठयोगेन स्पृशेन्नासापृटद्वयम्
With the union of the index finger and thumb, one should touch both sides of the nose.
संस्पृशेद् वा शिरस्तद्वदङ्गुष्ठेनाथवा द्वयम्
Or, likewise, one may touch the head with the thumb, or touch both sides.
ब्रह्मा विष्णुर्महेशश्च भवन्तीत्यनुशुश्रुमः
We have heard that Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesha become present thus.
संस्पृष्टयोर्लोचनयोः प्रीयेते शशिभास्करौ
When both eyes are touched, the Moon and the Sun are pleased.
कर्णयोः स्पृष्टयोस्तद्वत् प्रीयेते चानिलानलौ
Likewise, when both ears are touched, the Wind and Fire are pleased.
मूर्ध्नि संस्पर्शनादेकः प्रीतः स पुरुषो भवेत्
By touching the crown of the head, that person becomes singularly pleased.
दन्तवद् दन्तलग्नेषु जिह्वास्पर्शे ऽशुचिर्भवेत्
If the tongue touches the teeth or objects attached to the teeth, one becomes impure.
भूमिगैस्ते समा ज्ञेया न तैरप्रयतो भवेत्
Objects placed on the ground should be considered equal to the earth; one should not use them without proper intent.
फलमूले चेक्षुदण्डे न दोषं प्राह वे मनुः
Manu declares that there is no fault in fruits, roots, or sugarcane.
