भोभवत्पूर्वकं त्वेनमभिभाषेत धर्मवित्
A knower of dharma should address him, beginning with 'O revered sir.'
ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियाद्यैश्च श्रीकामैः सादरं सदा
A brāhmaṇa should always respectfully address him, as should those desiring prosperity among kṣatriyas and others.
ज्ञानकर्मगुणोपेता यद्यप्येते बहुश्रुताः
Even though these are endowed with the qualities of knowledge and action, and are well-versed in many texts,
सवर्णेषु सवर्णानां कार्यमेवाभिवादनम्
Among those of the same class, greeting is to be performed only with those of the same class.
पतिरेको गुरुः स्त्रीणां सर्वत्राभ्यागतो गुरुः
For women, the husband alone is the teacher; wherever he is present, he is the teacher.
मान्यस्थानानि पञ्चाहुः पूर्वं पूर्वं गुरूत्तरात्
They declare five ranks of honor, each preceding one being superior to the next.
यत्र स्युः सो ऽत्र मानार्हः शूद्रो ऽपि दशमीं गतः
Wherever they are found, he is worthy of respect there—even a Śūdra who has attained the tenth stage.
वृद्धाय भारबुग्नाय रोगिणे दुर्बलाय च
To the aged, to one bent with burdens, to the sick, and to the weak,
निवेद्य गुरवे ऽश्नीयाद् वाग्यतस्तदनुज्ञया
One should eat only after informing the teacher, with controlled speech, and with his permission.
भवन्मध्यं तु राजन्यो वैश्यस्तु भवदुत्तरम्
A Kṣatriya should stand in the middle of the assembly, and a Vaiśya above the assembly.
भिक्षेत भिक्षां प्रथमं या चैनं न विमानयेत्
He should first beg alms from those who do not dishonor him.
भैक्ष्यस्य चरणं प्रोक्तं पतितादिषु वर्जितम्
The practice of begging for alms is prescribed, except from those fallen and the like.
ब्रह्मचर्याहरेद् भैक्षं गृहेभ्यः प्रयतो ऽन्वहम्
A student should collect alms daily from households, with effort and purity.
अलाभे त्वन्यगेहानां पूर्वं पूर्वं विवर्जयेत्
If unsuccessful, he should avoid, in order, the other houses previously approached.
नियम्य प्रयतो वाचं दिशस्त्वनवलोकयन्
Restraining and controlling his speech, not looking in all directions,
भुञ्जीत प्रयतो नित्यं वाग्यतो ऽनन्यमानसः
He should always eat with effort, with controlled speech, and with his mind not distracted.
भैक्ष्येण व्रतिनो वृत्तिरुपवाससमा स्मृता
The livelihood of those who observe vows through alms is considered equal to fasting.
दृष्ट्वा हृष्येत् प्रसीदेच्च प्रतिनन्देच्च सर्वशः
Seeing, one should rejoice, be pleased, and always respond with approval.
अपुण्यं लोकविद्विष्टं तस्मात् तत्परिवर्जयेत्
Therefore, one should avoid that which is unholy and hated by the world.
नाद्यादुदङ्मुखो नित्यं विधिरेष सनातनः
One should not always eat facing north; this is an eternal rule.
शुचौ देशे समासीनो भुक्त्वा च द्विरुपस्पृशेत्
Seated in a clean place, after eating, one should rinse the mouth twice.
ओष्ठावलमोकौ स्पृष्ट्वा वासो विपरिधाय च
Having touched the lips and the inside of the mouth, and having put on a garment anew,
ष्ठीवित्वाध्ययनारम्भे कासश्वासागमे तथा
At the commencement of study after spitting, or when coughing or breathing heavily,
संध्ययोरुभयोस्तद्वदाचान्तो ऽप्याचमेत् पुनः
Likewise, at both twilights, even if one has already rinsed, one should rinse again.
आचामेदश्रुपाते वा लोहितस्य तथैव च
One should rinse after shedding tears, and likewise after bleeding.
आचान्तो ऽप्याचमेत् सुप्त्वा सकृत्सकृदथान्यतः
Even after rinsing, one should rinse again after sleeping, once or repeatedly, and also after other occasions.
स्त्रीणामथात्मनः स्पर्शे नीवीं वा परिधाय च
After touching women or oneself, or after putting on a lower garment,
केशानां चात्मनः स्पर्शे वाससो ऽक्षालितस्य च
After touching one's own hair, or after wearing unwashed clothes,
शौचेप्सुः सर्वदाचामेदासीनः प्रागुदङ्मुखः
Desiring cleanliness, one should always rinse, seated, facing east or north.
अकृत्वा पादयोः शौचमाचान्तो ऽप्यशुचिर्भवेत्
Without washing the feet, even after rinsing, one remains impure.
