युञ्जीत योगं प्रयतो ह्यजस्रम्
One should diligently practice yoga constantly.
येनात्मानं प्रपश्यन्ति भानुमन्तमिवेश्वरम्
By which they perceive the self, radiant like the sun, as the Lord.
प्रसन्नं जायते ज्ञानं साक्षान्निर्वाणसिद्धिदम्
Serene knowledge arises, directly granting the attainment of nirvāṇa.
योगज्ञानाभियुक्तस्य प्रसीदति महेश्वरः
To one engaged in the knowledge of yoga, the great Lord becomes gracious.
ये युञ्जन्तीह मद्योगं ते विज्ञेया महेश्वराः
Those who practice my yoga here are to be known as great lords.
अपरस्तु महायोगः सर्वयोगोत्तमोत्तमः
But there is another, the great yoga, the highest of all yogas.
अभावयोगः स प्रोक्तो येनात्मानं प्रपश्यति
It is called the yoga of non-being, by which one perceives the self.
मयैक्यं स महायोगो भाषितः परमेश्वरः
That great yoga, spoken of as unity with me, is the Supreme Lord.
सर्वे ते ब्रह्मयोगस्य कलां नार्हन्ति षोडशीम्
None of these can reach even a sixteenth part of the yoga of Brahman.
सर्वेषामेव योगानां स योगः परमो मतः
Of all yogas, that yoga is considered supreme.
न ते पश्यन्ति मामेकं योगिनो यतमानसाः
Even striving yogis do not see me alone.
समाधिश्च मुनिश्रेष्ठा यमो नियम आसनम्
O best of sages, samādhi, restraint, observance, and posture—
तत्साधनान्यष्टधा तु युष्माकं कथितानि तु
The means for that have been described to you in eightfold manner.
यमाः संक्षेपतः प्रोक्ताश्चित्तशुद्धिप्रदा नृणाम्
The restraints have been briefly stated; they grant purity of mind to people.
अक्लेशजननं प्रोक्तं त्वहिंसा परमर्षिभिः
Non-injury is declared by the foremost sages as that which does not cause affliction.
विधिना या भवेद्धिंसा त्वहिंसैव प्रकीर्तिता
That injury which occurs according to prescribed rule is itself called non-injury.
यथार्थकथनाचारः सत्यं प्रोक्तं द्विजातिभिः
Truth is declared by the twice-born as conduct in accordance with reality and speech.
स्तेयं तस्यानाचरणादस्तेयं धर्मसाधनम्
Non-stealing is the pursuit of dharma through abstaining from theft.
सर्वत्र मैथुनत्यागं ब्रह्मचर्यं प्रचक्षते
Brahmacharya is defined everywhere as the renunciation of sexual intercourse.
अपरिग्रह इत्याहुस्तं प्रयत्नेन पालयेत्
They call it non-possession; one should carefully observe it.
समासान्नियमाः प्रोक्ता योगसिद्धिप्रदायिनः
The observances are stated in summary; they bestow accomplishment in yoga.
शरीरशोषणं प्राहुस्तापसास्तप उत्तमम्
Ascetics declare bodily austerity as the highest form of tapas.
सत्त्वशुद्धिकरं पुंसां स्वाध्यायं परिचक्षते
They describe study as that which brings purity of mind to men.
उत्तरोत्तरवैशिष्ट्यं प्राहुर्वेदार्थवेदिनः
Those who know the meaning of the Vedas speak of successive distinctions.
स्वाध्यायो वाचिकः प्रोक्त उपांशोरथ लक्षणम्
Study is said to be vocal; its characteristic is also that of murmured recitation.
उपांशुरेष निर्दिष्टः साहस्रो वाचिकाज्जपः
This murmured recitation is specified; it is a thousand times superior to vocal recitation.
चिन्तनं सर्वशब्दानां मानसं तं जपं विदुः
Mental repetition is known as the contemplation of all words.
या धीस्तामृषयः प्राहुः संतोषं सुखलक्षणम्
That contentment whose nature is happiness is declared by the sages as steadfastness of mind.
मृज्जलाभ्यां स्मृतं बाह्यं मनःशुद्धिरथान्तरम्
External purity is remembered as being through earth and water; internal is purity of mind.
सुनिश्चला शिवे भक्तिरेतदीश्वरपूजनम्
Unwavering devotion to Shiva is the worship of the Lord.
