स जीवः सो ऽन्तरात्मेति गीयते तत्त्वचिन्तकैः
That is called the jīva, the inner self, by those who contemplate reality.
स विज्ञानात्मकस्तस्य मनः स्यादुपकारकम्
It is of the nature of knowledge; for it, the mind serves as an instrument.
स चाविवेकः प्रकृतौ सङ्गात् कालेन सो ऽभवत्
And that lack of discrimination, due to association with Prakriti, arose through time.
सर्वे कालस्य वशगा न कालः कस्यचिद् वशे
All are subject to time; time is under the control of none.
प्रोच्यते भगवान् प्राणः सर्वज्ञः पुरुषोत्तमः
The Lord is called Prāṇa, all-knowing, the supreme person.
मनसश्चाप्यहङ्कारमहङ्कारान्महान् परः
From the mind comes ego, and beyond ego is the great principle.
पुरुषाद् भगवान् प्राणस्तस्य सर्वमिदं जगत्
From the person comes the Lord, Prāṇa; from him is this entire world.
नास्ति मत्तः परं भूतं मां विज्ञाय विमुच्यते
There is no being higher than me; knowing me, one is liberated.
ऋते मामेकमव्यक्तं व्योमरूपं महेश्वरम्
Except for Me alone—the unmanifest, of the nature of space, the Great Lord—
मायी मायामयो देवः कालेन सह सङ्गतः
The Lord, who is the possessor of māyā and composed of māyā, is united with Time.
नियोजयत्यनन्तात्मा ह्येतद् वेदानुशासनम्
The Infinite Self indeed ordains this, in accordance with the injunction of the Veda.
माहात्म्यं देवदेवस्य येनेदं संप्रवर्तते
By whose greatness of the God of gods this world is set in motion—
शक्यो हि पुरुषैर्ज्ञातुमृते भक्तिमनुत्तमाम्
It can be known by men only through supreme devotion.
मां सर्वसाक्षिणं लोको न जानाति मुनीश्वराः
The world does not know Me, the witness of all, nor do the great sages.
सो ऽहन्धाता विधाता च कालो ऽग्निर्विश्वतोमुखः
He is the self, the creator, the ordainer, Time, Fire, facing in all directions.
ब्रह्मा च मनवः शक्रो ये चान्ये प्रथितौजसः
Brahmā, the Manus, Indra, and others renowned for their might—
यजन्ति विविधैरग्निं ब्राह्मणा वैदिकैर्मखैः
The Brāhmaṇas worship Fire with various Vedic sacrifices.
ध्यायन्ति योगिनो देवं भूताधिपतिमीश्वरम्
The yogis meditate on the Lord, the ruler of beings, the Supreme Lord.
सर्वदेवतनुर्भूत्वा सर्वात्मा सर्वसंस्थितः
Having become the body of all the gods, the Self of all, abiding in all things—
तेषां सन्निहितो नित्यं ये भक्त्या मामुपासते
I am always present near those who worship Me with devotion.
तेषां ददामि तत् स्थानमानन्दं परमं पदम्
To them I grant that place—bliss, the supreme state.
भक्तिमन्तः प्रमुच्यन्ते कालेन मयि संगताः
Those devoted ones, united with Me in Time, are released.
आदावेतत् प्रतिज्ञातं न मे भक्तः प्रणश्यति
This was declared at the beginning: My devotee does not perish.
यो हि तं पूजयेद् भक्त्या स पूजयति मां सदा
Whoever worships him with devotion, always worships Me.
यो मे ददाति नियतः स मे भक्तः प्रियो मतः
He who gives to Me with discipline is regarded by Me as a dear devotee.
विधाय दत्तवान् वेदानशेषानात्मनिः सृतान्
Having established and given all the Vedas, which have arisen from the Self—
धार्मिकाणां च गोप्ताहं निहन्ता वेदविद्विषाम्
I am the protector of the righteous and the destroyer of those who hate the Veda.
संसारहेतुरेवाहं सर्वसंसारवर्जितः
Indeed, I am the very cause of worldly existence, yet I am untouched by all worldly existence.
मायावी मामीका शक्तिर्माया लोकविमोहिनी
I am the wielder of illusion; my unique power is Māyā, which deludes the worlds.
नाशयामि तया मायां योगिनां हृदि संस्थितः
Abiding in the hearts of yogis, by that Māyā I destroy illusion.
