प्रधानं प्रकृतिं बुद्ध्वा कारणं ब्रह्मवादिनः
The knowers of Brahman declare that the primal nature is the cause.
स्वात्मानमक्षरं ब्रह्म नावबुद्ध्येत तत्त्वतः
One does not truly realize the imperishable Self, Brahman.
रगद्वेषादयो दोषाः सर्वे भ्रान्तिनिबन्धनाः
All faults such as attachment and aversion are rooted in delusion.
तद्वशादेव सर्वेषां सर्वदेहसमुद्भवः
It is only by their power that all bodies arise for all beings.
एकः स भिद्यते शक्त्या मायया न स्वभावतः
He is one, divided by power—by illusion, not by his own nature.
भेदो व्यक्तस्वभावेन सा च मायात्मसंश्रया
Difference appears due to manifest nature, and that depends on the essence of illusion.
अन्तः करणजैर्भावैरात्मा तद्वन्न लिप्यते
Just as the self is not tainted by thoughts arising in the inner faculty, so too here.
उपाधिहीनो विमलस्तथैवात्मा प्रकाशते
When free from limiting adjuncts and pure, the self shines forth in the same way.
अर्थस्वरूपमेवाज्ञाः पश्यन्त्यन्ये कुदृष्टयः
The ignorant, with distorted vision, see only the external form of the object.
दृश्यते ह्यर्थरूपेण पुरुषैर्भ्रान्तिदृष्टिभिः
Indeed, those with deluded vision perceive it in the form of the object.
रक्तिकाद्युपधानेन तद्वत् परमपूरुषः
Just as with the covering of a red cloth and the like, so too is the Supreme Person.
उपासितव्यो मन्तव्यः श्रोतव्यश्च मुमुक्षुभिः
He is to be worshipped, reflected upon, and heard about by those seeking liberation.
योगिनो ऽव्यवधानेन तदा संपद्यते स्वयम्
For yogis, without obstruction, at that time he is realized directly.
सर्वभूतेषु चात्मानं ब्रह्म संपद्यते तदा
Then, the self in all beings becomes Brahman.
एकीभूतः परेणासौ तदा भवति केवलः
United with the Supreme, he then becomes alone—pure and singular.
तदासावमृतीभूतः क्षेमं गच्छति पण्डितः
Then, having become immortal, the wise one attains peace.
तत एव च विस्तारं ब्रह्म संपद्यते तदा
From that alone, Brahman expands at that time.
मायामात्रं जगत् कृत्स्नं तदा भवति निर्वृतः
Then, the entire world is known as mere illusion, and he becomes content.
केवलं ब्रह्मविज्ञानं जायते ऽसौ तदा शिवः
Then, only the knowledge of Brahman arises; he is then auspicious.
तद्वदात्माक्षरेणासौ निष्कलेनैकतां व्रजेत्
In the same way, he attains unity with the imperishable self, which is without parts.
अज्ञानेनावृतं लोको विज्ञानं तेन मुह्यति
The world is covered by ignorance; because of that, knowledge is confused.
अज्ञानमितरत् सर्वं विज्ञानमिति मे मतम्
All else is ignorance; knowledge alone, in my view, is real.
सर्ववेदान्तसारं हि योगस्तत्रैकचित्तता
Indeed, yoga is the essence of all Vedanta, for it is the state of single-pointed mind.
योगज्ञानाभियुक्तस्य नावाप्यं विद्यते क्वचित्
For one engaged in the knowledge of yoga, there is nothing unattainable anywhere.
एकं सांख्यं च योगं च यः पश्यति स तत्त्ववित्
He who sees Sāṃkhya and Yoga as one is a knower of the truth.
मज्जन्ति तत्र तत्रैव न त्वात्मैषामिति श्रुतिः
They sink here and there, but not the Self—so declares the scripture.
ज्ञानयोगाभियुक्तस्तु देहान्ते तदवाप्नुयात्
But one devoted to knowledge and yoga attains That at the end of the body.
कीर्तितः सर्ववेदेषु सर्वात्मा सर्वतोमुखः
The all-pervading Self, facing all directions, is proclaimed in all the Vedas.
सर्वतः पाणिपादो ऽहमन्तर्यामी सनातनः
I am the Inner Ruler, eternal, with hands and feet everywhere.
अचक्षुरपि पश्यामि तथाकर्णः शृणोम्यहम्
Though without eyes, I see; though without ears, I hear.
