नृपेण बलिना चैव पातालस्वर्गवासिना
By a mighty king dwelling in Pātāla-svarga.
सितं हि वितलं प्रोक्तं तलं चैव सितेतरम्
Vitala is said to be white, and Tala is also described as white.
रसातलमिति ख्यातं तथान्यैश्च निषेवितम्
Rasātala is renowned as such, and is frequented by others as well.
तलातलमिति ख्यातं सर्वशोभासमन्वितम्
Talātala is famed, endowed with every kind of splendor.
पूर्वदेवैः समाकीर्णं सुतलं च तथापरैः
Sutala is filled with the gods of old and with others as well.
महान्तकाद्यैर्नागैश्च प्रह्मादेनासुरेण च
By great serpents like Mahāntaka and by the demon Prahmāda.
महाजम्भेन वीरेण हयग्रीवेण वै तथा
By the mighty Jambha and the heroic Hayagrīva as well,
तथान्यैर्विवधैर्नागैस्तलं चैव सुशोभनम्
And likewise by other fierce serpents, the splendid netherworld is filled.
पापिनस्तेषु पच्यन्ते न ते वर्णयितुं क्षमाः
The wicked are tormented there; they are too many to be described.
कालाग्निरुद्रो योगात्मा नारसिंहो ऽपि माधवः
Kālāgni, Rudra, the soul of yoga, Nārasiṃha, and Mādhava as well,
तदाधारमिदं सर्वं स कालाग्निमपाश्रितः
All this rests upon him, who has taken on the form of Kālāgni.
विषज्वालामयो ऽन्ते ऽसौ जगत् संहरति स्वयम्
At the end, he, blazing with venomous flames, dissolves the world by himself.
तामसी शांभवी मूर्तिः कालो लोकप्रकालनः
The dark, Śāṃbhavī form is Time, the destroyer of worlds.
अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि भूर्लोकस्यास्य निर्णयम्
Now I shall declare further the determination of this earthly world.
कुशः क्रौञ्चश्च शाकश्च पुष्करश्चैव सप्तमः
Kuśa, Krauñca, Śāka, and Puṣkara are the seventh.
द्वीपाद् द्वीपो महानुक्तः सागरादपि सागरः
From island to island, each is said to be great, and each ocean greater than the last.
दध्योदः क्षीरसलिलः स्वादूदश्चेति सागराः
The oceans are named: Dadhyoda, the ocean of milk, and the ocean of sweet water.
द्वीपैश्च सप्तभिर्युक्ता योजनानां समासतः
These are joined by seven islands, measured in yojanas in summary.
तस्य मध्ये महामेरुर्विश्रुतः कनकप्रभः
In the midst of them stands the famed Mount Meru, shining like gold.
प्रविष्टः षोडशाधस्ताद्द्वात्रिंशन्मूर्ध्नि विस्तृतः
It extends sixteen units below and thirty-two at the summit.
भूपद्मास्यास्य शैलो ऽसौ कर्णिकात्वेन संस्थितः
That mountain, with the earth-lotus as its base, stands as the pericarp.
नीलः श्वेतश्च शृङ्गी च उत्तरे वर्षपर्वताः
Nīla, Śveta, and Śṛṅgī are the northern boundary mountains.
सहस्त्रद्वितयोच्छ्रायास्तावद्विस्तारिणश्च ते
Each rises to twice a thousand in height, and they are equally broad.
हरिवर्षं तथैवान्यन्मेरोर्दक्षिणतो द्विजाः
Likewise, O twice-born, Harivarṣa lies to the south of Meru.
उत्तराः कुरवश्चैव यथैते भरतास्तथा
Just as these Bharatas, so too are the northern Kurus.
इलावृतं च तन्मध्ये तन्मध्ये मेरुरुच्छ्रितः
In the middle of that is Ilāvṛta, and in its midst rises Mount Meru.
विष्कम्भा रचिता मेरोर्योजनायुतमुच्छ्रिताः
The buttresses constructed on Meru rise to a height of ten thousand yojanas.
विपुलः पश्चिमे पार्श्वे सुपार्श्वश्चोत्तरे स्मृतः
On the western side is the vast Vipula, and on the northern, Supārśva is known.
जम्बूद्वीपस्य सा जम्बूर्नामहेतुर्महर्षयः
O great sages, the reason for the name Jambū of Jambūdvīpa is as follows.
पतन्ति भूभृतः पृष्ठे शीर्यमाणानि सर्वतः
Jambu fruits fall upon the back of the earth-supporting mountain, decaying everywhere.
