ह्रासवृद्धी च विप्रेन्द्रा ध्रुवाधाराणि सर्वदा
O foremost of Brahmins, decrease and increase are always fixed and constant.
आपूर्यते परस्यान्तः सततं दिवसक्रमात्
The interior of the other is continually filled, day after day.
एकेन रश्मिना विप्राः सुषुम्नाख्येन भास्करः
O Brahmins, the Sun, with a single ray called Suṣumnā, shines forth.
पौर्णमास्यां स दृश्येत संपूर्णे दिवसक्रमात्
On the full moon day, he is seen as complete, day after day.
पिबन्ति देवता विप्रा यतस्ते ऽमृतभोजनाः
O Brahmins, the gods drink that, for they partake of ambrosial food.
अपराह्णे पितृगणा जघन्यं पर्युपासते
In the afternoon, the hosts of ancestors partake of the remainder.
सुधामृतमयीं पुण्यां तामन्दोरमृतात्मिकाम्
That pure, ambrosial, and meritorious essence, the moon, is of the nature of nectar.
मासतृप्तिमपाप्यग्र्यां पितरः सन्ति निर्वृताः
Having attained the highest monthly satisfaction, the ancestors remain content.
एवं सूर्यनिमित्तस्य क्षयो वृद्धिश्च सत्तमाः
Thus, O best of men, there is both decrease and increase on account of the Sun.
वारिजैः स्यन्दनो युक्तस्तेनासौ याति सर्वतः
His chariot, yoked with lotuses, thus moves everywhere.
अष्टबिश्चाथ भौमस्य रथो हैमः सुशोभनः
And then, the beautiful golden chariot of the Earth is drawn by eight (horses).
स्वर्भानोर्भास्करारेश्च तथा षड्भिर्हयैर्वृतः
Likewise, the chariot of Svarbhānu and the lord of the Sun is drawn by six horses.
सर्वे ध्रुवे महाभागा निबद्धा वातरश्मिभिः
All are firmly fixed to the pole star, O greatly fortunate ones, bound by wind-rays.
भ्रमन्ति भ्रामयन्त्येनं सर्वाण्यनिलरश्मिभिः
All these, with rays of wind, revolve and cause him to revolve.
कल्पाधिकारिणस्तत्र संस्थिता द्विजपुङ्गवाः
There, O best of twice-born, are established those who preside over the cycles of time.
सनन्दनादयस्तत्र संस्थिता ब्रह्मणः सुताः
There, too, are established Sanandana and others, the sons of Brahmā.
वैराजास्तत्र वै देवाः स्थिता दाहविवर्जिताः
There, indeed, are the Vairājas, the gods free from burning (suffering).
अपुनर्मारकास्तत्र ब्रह्मलोकस्तु स स्मृतः
There are those who do not die again; that is remembered as Brahmā's world.
आस्ते स योगिभिर्नित्यं पीत्वा योगामृतं परम्
He abides there always with the yogis, having drunk the supreme nectar of yoga.
योगिनस्तापसाः सिद्धा जापकाः परमेष्ठिनम्
The yogis, ascetics, perfected beings, and reciters worship the Supreme Lord.
तत्र गत्वा न शोचन्ति स विष्णुः स च शङ्करः
Having reached there, they do not grieve; there is Viṣṇu, and there too is Śaṅkara.
न मे वर्णयितुं शक्यं ज्वालामालासमाकुलम्
I am not able to describe it, filled as it is with garlands of blazing flames.
शेते तत्र हरिः श्रीमान् मायी मायामयः परः
There rests the glorious Hari, the master of illusion, transcendent and composed of māyā.
यान्ति तत्र महात्मानो ये प्रपन्ना जनार्दनम्
Great souls who have surrendered to Janārdana go there.
वह्निना च परिक्षिप्तं तत्रास्ते भगवान् भवः
Surrounded by fire, there abides the venerable Lord Bhava.
योगिभिः शतसाहस्त्रैर्भूतै रुद्रैश्च संवृतः
He is attended by hundreds of thousands of yogis and beings, and by Rudras.
मदादेवपराः शान्तास्तापसा ब्रह्मवादिनः
Devoted to me, intent on the divine, peaceful, ascetic, and speakers of Brahman.
द्रक्ष्यन्ति ब्रह्मणा युक्ता रुद्रलोकः स वै स्मृतः
Endowed with Brahman, they will see Rudraloka, as it is known.
महातलादयश्चाधः पातालाः सन्ति वै द्विजाः
Below are Mahātala and the other netherworlds, O twice-born ones.
प्रासादैर्विविधैः शुभ्रैर्देवतायतनैर्युतम्
They are adorned with various splendid palaces and abodes of the gods.
