आदानान्नित्यमादित्यस्तेजसां तमसां प्रभुः
The Sun, lord of brilliance and darkness, always takes in all these.
स्थावराञ्जङ्गमांश्चैव यच्च कुल्यादिकं पयः
Both immobile and mobile beings, and also the waters of rivers and the like.
तासां चतुः शतं नाड्यो वर्षन्ते चित्रमूर्तयः
Of these, four hundred channels pour forth, each with a wondrous form.
अमृता नाम ताः सर्वा रश्मयो वृष्टिसर्जनाः
All these rays are called 'nectar', and they produce showers.
चन्द्रास्ता नामतः सर्वाः पीताभाः स्युर्गभस्तयः
All those rays named 'moon' are golden-hued.
शुक्रास्ता नामतः सर्वास्त्रिविधा घर्मसर्जनाः
All those rays named 'shukra' are of three kinds, producing heat.
अमृतेन सुरान् सर्वांस्त्रिभिस्त्ररिंस्तर्पयत्यसौ
With nectar, he satisfies all the gods in three ways.
हेमन्ते शिशिरे चैव हिममुत्सृजति त्रिभिः
In winter and the cold season, he releases frost with three rays.
चैत्रे मासि भवेदंशो धाता वैशाखतापनः
In the month of Chaitra, the ray called Dhata; in Vaishakha, Tapana.
विवस्वान् श्रावणे मासि प्रौष्ठपद्यां भगः स्मृतः
In the month of Shravana, the ray is called Vivasvan; in Praushthapada, Bhaga.
मार्गशीर्ष भवेन्मित्रः पौषे विष्णुः सनातनः
In Margashirsha, Mitra; in Pausha, Vishnu the eternal.
षड्भिः सहस्त्रैः पूषा तु देवोंशः सप्तभिस्तथा
The god Pushan has six thousand rays, and the ray called Saptabhis likewise.
विवस्वान् दशभिः पाति पात्येकादशभिर्भगः
Vivasvan protects with ten rays, and Bhaga with eleven.
षड्भी रश्मिसहस्त्रैस्तु विष्णुस्तपति विश्वसृक्
Vishnu, creator of the world, shines with six thousand rays.
हेमन्ते ताम्रवर्णः स्याच्छिशिरे लोहितो रविः
In winter, he is copper-colored; in the cold season, the sun is red.
सूर्यो ऽमरत्वममृते त्रयं त्रिषु नियच्छति
The sun bestows immortality, nectar, and threefold qualities in three ways.
भौमो मन्दस्तथा राहुः केतुमानपि चाष्टमः
Mars, Mandha, Rahu, and Ketu are also counted as the eighth.
भ्राम्यमाणा यथायोगं भ्रमन्त्यनुदिवाकरम्
They revolve according to their proper order, moving without the sun.
यस्माद् वहति तान् वायुः प्रवहस्तेन स स्मृतः
Because the wind carries them, it is called Pravaha.
वामदक्षिणतो युक्ता दश तेन निशाकरः
Ten are joined on the left and right; thus, the moon is so called.
ह्रासवृद्धी च विप्रेन्द्रा ध्रुवाधाराणि सर्वदा
O foremost of Brahmins, decrease and increase are always fixed and constant.
आपूर्यते परस्यान्तः सततं दिवसक्रमात्
The interior of the other is continually filled, day after day.
एकेन रश्मिना विप्राः सुषुम्नाख्येन भास्करः
O Brahmins, the Sun, with a single ray called Suṣumnā, shines forth.
पौर्णमास्यां स दृश्येत संपूर्णे दिवसक्रमात्
On the full moon day, he is seen as complete, day after day.
पिबन्ति देवता विप्रा यतस्ते ऽमृतभोजनाः
O Brahmins, the gods drink that, for they partake of ambrosial food.
अपराह्णे पितृगणा जघन्यं पर्युपासते
In the afternoon, the hosts of ancestors partake of the remainder.
सुधामृतमयीं पुण्यां तामन्दोरमृतात्मिकाम्
That pure, ambrosial, and meritorious essence, the moon, is of the nature of nectar.
मासतृप्तिमपाप्यग्र्यां पितरः सन्ति निर्वृताः
Having attained the highest monthly satisfaction, the ancestors remain content.
एवं सूर्यनिमित्तस्य क्षयो वृद्धिश्च सत्तमाः
Thus, O best of men, there is both decrease and increase on account of the Sun.
वारिजैः स्यन्दनो युक्तस्तेनासौ याति सर्वतः
His chariot, yoked with lotuses, thus moves everywhere.
