अन्या च पूर्वचित्तिः स्यादन्या चैव तिलोत्तमा
And another is Pūrvacitti, and another indeed is Tilottamā.
तोषयन्ति महादेवं भानुमात्मानमव्ययम्
They please the great god, the Sun, the imperishable Self.
सूर्यमाप्याययन्त्येते तेजसा तेजसां निधिम्
These nourish the Sun, the repository of radiance, with their own brilliance.
गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैनं नृत्यगेयैरुपासते
The Gandharvas and Apsarases attend him with dance and song.
सर्पा वहन्ति देवेशं यातुधानाः प्रयान्ति च
The serpents carry the Lord of the gods, and the demons also proceed.
भूतानामशुभं कर्म व्यपोहन्तीह कीर्तिताः
They are said here to remove the inauspicious deeds of beings.
विमाने च स्थितो नित्यं कामगे वातरंहसि
Always abiding in the celestial chariot, he moves at will with the speed of the wind.
गोपयन्तीह भूतानि सर्वाणीहायुगक्षयात्
Here, she protects all beings until the end of the age.
यथायोगं यथासत्त्वं स एष तपति प्रभुः
As is proper, according to their nature, this Lord shines forth.
पितृदेवमनुष्यादीन् स सदाप्यायेद् रविः
The Sun always nourishes the ancestors, gods, humans, and others.
भासते वेदविदुषां नीलग्रीवः सनातनः
The eternal blue-throated one shines among those who know the Vedas.
स्थानं तद् विदुरादित्यं वेदज्ञा वेदविग्रहम्
The knowers of the Vedas understand that place as the Sun, the embodiment of the Vedas.
करोति नियतं कालं कालात्मा ह्यैश्वरी तनुः
The Lord of time, whose form is divine, indeed regulates time.
तेषां श्रेष्ठाः पुनः सप्त रश्मयो ग्रहयोनयः
Among them, the seven rays, sources of the planets, are the foremost.
विश्वव्यचाः पुनश्चान्यः संयद्वसुरतः परः
Another is Viśvavyacā, and yet another, the supreme one, is Saṃyadvasu.
सुपुम्नः सूर्यरश्मिस्तु पुष्णाति शिशिरद्युतिम्
The sun's ray called Supumna nourishes the cool radiance.
हरिकेशस्तु यः प्रोक्तो रश्मिर्नक्षत्रपोषकः
The ray called Harikeśa is said to nourish the stars.
विश्वव्यचास्तु यो रश्मिः शुक्रं पुष्णाति नित्यदा
The ray called Viśvavyacā always nourishes Venus.
शनैश्चरं प्रपुष्णाति सप्तमस्तु सुराट् तथा
The seventh, called Surāṭ, nourishes Saturn as well.
वर्धन्ते वर्धिता नित्यं नित्यमाप्याययन्ति च
They ever increase and, being increased, always bring nourishment.
आदानान्नित्यमादित्यस्तेजसां तमसां प्रभुः
The Sun, lord of brilliance and darkness, always takes in all these.
स्थावराञ्जङ्गमांश्चैव यच्च कुल्यादिकं पयः
Both immobile and mobile beings, and also the waters of rivers and the like.
तासां चतुः शतं नाड्यो वर्षन्ते चित्रमूर्तयः
Of these, four hundred channels pour forth, each with a wondrous form.
अमृता नाम ताः सर्वा रश्मयो वृष्टिसर्जनाः
All these rays are called 'nectar', and they produce showers.
चन्द्रास्ता नामतः सर्वाः पीताभाः स्युर्गभस्तयः
All those rays named 'moon' are golden-hued.
शुक्रास्ता नामतः सर्वास्त्रिविधा घर्मसर्जनाः
All those rays named 'shukra' are of three kinds, producing heat.
अमृतेन सुरान् सर्वांस्त्रिभिस्त्ररिंस्तर्पयत्यसौ
With nectar, he satisfies all the gods in three ways.
हेमन्ते शिशिरे चैव हिममुत्सृजति त्रिभिः
In winter and the cold season, he releases frost with three rays.
चैत्रे मासि भवेदंशो धाता वैशाखतापनः
In the month of Chaitra, the ray called Dhata; in Vaishakha, Tapana.
विवस्वान् श्रावणे मासि प्रौष्ठपद्यां भगः स्मृतः
In the month of Shravana, the ray is called Vivasvan; in Praushthapada, Bhaga.
