लक्षद्वयेन भौमस्य स्थितो देवपुरोहितः
At a distance of two hundred thousand yojanas from the earth stands the priest of the gods.
सप्तर्षिमण्डलं तस्माल्लक्षमात्रे प्रिकाशते
From there, at a distance of one hundred thousand yojanas, the circle of the Seven Sages is seen.
तत्र धर्मः स भगवान् विष्णुर्नारायणः स्थितः
There, Dharma abides—he is the blessed Lord Viṣṇu, Nārāyaṇa.
त्रिगुणस्तस्य विस्तारो मण्डलस्य प्रमाणतः
The expanse of that circle, measured, is threefold.
तुल्यस्तयोस्तु स्वर्भानुर्भूत्वाधस्तात् प्रसर्पति
Of those two, Svarbhānu moves below, being equal in measure.
स्वर्भानोस्तु वृहत् स्थानं तृतीयं यत् तमोमयम्
Svarbhānu’s great station, the third, is said to be full of darkness.
भार्गवात् पादहीनस्तु विज्ञेयो वै बृहस्पतिः
Below Bhārgava is Bṛhaspati, known to be without a foot’s length.
विस्तारान्मण्डलाच्चैव पादहीनस्तयोर्बुधः
From the expanse and the circle, Budha is also without a foot’s length compared to those two.
बुधेन तानि तुल्यानि विस्तारान्मण्डलात् तथा
By Budha, those distances and circles are likewise equal.
शतानि पञ्च चत्वारि त्रीणि द्वे चैव योजने
There are five, four, three, and two hundreds of yojanas.
योजनान्यर्धमात्राणि तेभ्यो ह्रस्वं न विद्यते
There are also half-yojana measures; nothing less than these is known.
सौरो ऽङ्गिराश्च वक्रश्च ज्ञेया मन्दविचारिणः
The planet Saturn, Aṅgiras, and Vakra are to be known as slow-moving.
सूर्यः सौमो बुधश्चैव भार्गवश्चैव शीघ्रगाः
The Sun, the Moon, Budha, and Bhārgava are swift-moving.
तदा सर्वग्रहाणां स सूर्यो ऽधस्तात् प्रसर्पति
Then, among all the planets, the Sun moves below.
नक्षत्रमण्डलं कृत्स्नं सोमादूर्ध्वं प्रसर्पति
The entire circle of stars moves above the Moon.
वक्रस्तु भार्गवादूर्ध्वं वक्रादूर्ध्वं बृहस्पतिः
Vakra is above Bhārgava, and above Vakra is Bṛhaspati.
ऋषीणां चैव सप्तानान्ध्रु वश्चोर्ध्वं व्यवस्थितः
Above the Seven Sages and Dhruva, he is established.
ईषादण्डस्तथैव स्याद् द्विगुणो द्विजसत्तमाः
The staff is said to be slightly inclined, and twice as long, O best of twice-born.
योजनानां तु तस्याक्षस्तत्र चक्रं प्रतिष्ठितम्
The axle of that chariot measures a yojana in length, and there the wheel is fixed.
संवत्सरमेय कृत्स्नं कालचक्रं प्रतिष्ठितम्
The complete wheel of time, measuring a year, is established there.
पञ्चान्यानि तु सार्धानि स्यन्दनस्य द्विजोत्तमाः
O best of twice-born, five and a half more yojanas are the measure of the chariot.
ह्रस्वो ऽक्षस्तद्युगार्धेन ध्रुवाधारे रथस्य तु
The axle at the support of the pole is shorter by half a yuga than that.
हयाश्च सप्त छन्दांसि तन्नामानि निबोधत
And the seven horses are the metres; listen to their names.
अनष्टुप् त्रिष्टुबित्युक्ताश्छन्दांसि हरयो हरेः
The metres called Anuṣṭubh and Triṣṭubh are said to be the horses of Hari.
दक्षिणे न यमस्याथ वरुणस्य तु पश्चिमे
On the south is the realm of Yama, and on the west, that of Varuṇa.
अमरावती संयमनी सुखा चैव विभा क्रमात्
Amarāvatī, Saṃyamanī, Sukhā, and Vibhā are, in order, their cities.
ज्योतिषां चक्रमादाय देवदेवः प्रजापतिः
The Lord of creatures, the god of gods, takes up the wheel of the luminaries.
सप्तद्वीपेषु विप्रेन्द्रा निशामध्यस्य संमुखम्
O foremost of Brahmins, in the midst of night, he faces all the seven continents.
अशेषासु दिशास्वेव तथैव विदिशासु च
In all directions without exception, and likewise in the intermediate directions.
करोत्यहस्तथा रात्रिं विमुञ्चन् मेदिनीं द्विजाः
Thus he makes day and night, withdrawing and releasing the earth, O twice-born.
