तस्यर्षभो ऽभवत् पुत्रो मरुदेव्यां महाद्युतिः
To him, a son named Ṛṣabha, of great brilliance, was born from Marudevī.
वानप्रस्थाश्रमं गत्वा तपस्तेपे यथाविधि
Having gone to the hermitage of forest-dwellers, he performed austerities according to the prescribed rule.
ज्ञानयोगरतो भूत्वा महापाशुपतो ऽभवत्
Engaged in the yoga of knowledge, he became a great devotee of Pashupati.
सुमतेस्तैजसस्तस्मादिन्द्रिद्युम्नो व्यजायत
From Sumati, who was radiant, was born Indradyumna.
प्रतिहर्तेति विख्यात उत्पन्नस्तस्य चात्मजः
His son, renowned as Pratiharta, was born.
पृथुस्ततस्ततो रक्तो रक्तस्यापि गयः सुतः
From him came Prithu; then from Prithu, Rakta; and from Rakta, Gaya was born as his son.
तस्य पुत्रो महावीर्यो धीमांस्तस्मादजायत
His son, endowed with great strength and intelligence, was born from him.
त्वष्टा त्वष्टुश्च विरजो रजस्तस्याप्यभूत् सुतः
Tvashta was the son of Tvashtu, and Viraja was born as the son of Rajas.
तेषां प्रधानो बलवान् विश्वज्योतिरिति स्मृतः
Among them, the chief and most powerful was known as Vishvajyotis.
असूत पुत्रं धर्मज्ञं महाबाहुमरिन्दमम्
He begot a son who was righteous, mighty-armed, and a subduer of enemies.
एषां वंशप्रसूतैश्च भुक्तेयं पृथिवी पुरा
In ancient times, this earth was enjoyed by those born in their lineage.
त्रैलोक्यस्यास्य मानं वो न शक्यं विस्तरेण तु
The full extent of these three worlds cannot be described to you in detail.
जनस्तपश्च सत्यं च लोकास्त्वण्डोद्भवा मताः
The Janaloka, Tapoloka, and Satyaloka are considered to have arisen from the cosmic egg.
तावद् भूर्लोक आख्यातः पुराणे द्विजपुङ्गवाः
So far, the Bhurloka has been described in the Purana, O best of twice-born.
भुवर्लोको ऽपि तावान्स्यान्मण्डलाद् भास्करस्य तु
The Bhuvarloka is also of the same extent as the orbit of the sun.
स्वर्लोकः स समाख्यातस्तत्र वायोस्तु नेमयः
The Svarloka is likewise described; there are the spokes of Vayu there.
संवहो विवहश्चाथ तदूर्ध्वं स्यात् परावहः
There are Samvaha and Vivaha, and above them is Paravaha.
भूमेर्योजनलक्षे तु भानोर्वै मण्डलं स्थितम्
At a hundred thousand yojanas from the earth is situated the orbit of the sun.
नक्षत्रमण्डलं कृत्स्नं तल्लक्षेण प्रकाशते
The entire circle of the stars shines at that same distance.
तावत्प्रमाणभागे तु बुधस्याप्युशनाः स्थितः
At that same measure of distance, the planet Budha and also Ushanas are situated.
लक्षद्वयेन भौमस्य स्थितो देवपुरोहितः
At a distance of two hundred thousand yojanas from the earth stands the priest of the gods.
सप्तर्षिमण्डलं तस्माल्लक्षमात्रे प्रिकाशते
From there, at a distance of one hundred thousand yojanas, the circle of the Seven Sages is seen.
तत्र धर्मः स भगवान् विष्णुर्नारायणः स्थितः
There, Dharma abides—he is the blessed Lord Viṣṇu, Nārāyaṇa.
त्रिगुणस्तस्य विस्तारो मण्डलस्य प्रमाणतः
The expanse of that circle, measured, is threefold.
तुल्यस्तयोस्तु स्वर्भानुर्भूत्वाधस्तात् प्रसर्पति
Of those two, Svarbhānu moves below, being equal in measure.
स्वर्भानोस्तु वृहत् स्थानं तृतीयं यत् तमोमयम्
Svarbhānu’s great station, the third, is said to be full of darkness.
भार्गवात् पादहीनस्तु विज्ञेयो वै बृहस्पतिः
Below Bhārgava is Bṛhaspati, known to be without a foot’s length.
विस्तारान्मण्डलाच्चैव पादहीनस्तयोर्बुधः
From the expanse and the circle, Budha is also without a foot’s length compared to those two.
बुधेन तानि तुल्यानि विस्तारान्मण्डलात् तथा
By Budha, those distances and circles are likewise equal.
शतानि पञ्च चत्वारि त्रीणि द्वे चैव योजने
There are five, four, three, and two hundreds of yojanas.
