नृपाणां तत्समासेन सूत वक्तुमिहार्हसि
O Sūta, you ought to speak here concisely about the kings.
नमस्कृत्वाप्रमेयाय यदुक्तं तेन धीमता
Having bowed to the immeasurable one, what was spoken by that wise one—
पुत्रस्तस्याभवन् पुत्राः प्रजापतिसमा दश
He had sons, ten sons equal to Prajāpati.
मेधा मेधातिथिर्हव्यः सवनः पुत्र एव च
Medhā, Medhātithi, Havya, Savana were also his sons.
धार्मिको दाननिरतः सर्वभूतानुकम्पकः
Righteous, devoted to giving, compassionate to all beings.
जातिस्मरा महाभागा न राज्ये दधिरे मतिम्
Blessed with great fortune and remembering their past births, they did not set their minds on the kingdom.
जम्बुद्वीपेश्वरं पुत्रमग्नीध्रमकरोन्नृपः
The king appointed his son Agnīdhra as lord of Jambūdvīpa.
शाल्मलेशं वपुष्मन्तं नरेन्द्रमभिषिक्तवान्
He anointed Vapuṣmat, lord of Śālmaladvīpa, as king.
द्युतिमन्तं च राजानं क्रौञ्चद्वीपे समादिशत्
And he assigned Dyutimat as king in Krauñcadvīpa.
पुष्कराधिपतिं चक्रे सवनं च प्रजापतिः
He made Savana the lord of Puṣkara, the lord of creatures.
धातिकिश्चैव द्वावेतौ पुत्रौ पुत्रवतां वरौ
Dhāti and Kiśa—these two, the best among sons, were also his sons.
नाम्ना तु धातकेश्चापि धातकीखण्डमुच्यते
By name, the region of Dhātaki is also called Dhātakīkhaṇḍa.
कुसुमोत्तरो ऽथ मोदाकिः सप्तमः स्यान्महाद्रुमः
Kusumottara and then Modāki—the seventh is Mahādruma.
कुमारस्य तु कौमारं तृतीयं सुकुमारकम्
Of Kumāra, the third son is called Sukumāra.
मोदाकं षष्ठमित्युक्तं सप्तमं तु महाद्रुमम्
The sixth is called Modāka, and the seventh is the great tree.
कुशलः प्रथमस्तेषां द्वितीयस्तु मनोहरः
Among them, the first is skilled, and the second is delightful.
तेषां स्वनामभिर्देशाः क्रौञ्चद्वीपाश्रयाः शुभाः
Their auspicious regions in the Krauncha continent are known by their own names.
षष्ठः प्रभाकारश्चापि सप्तमः कपिलः स्मृतः
The sixth is also called Prabhākāra, and the seventh is known as Kapila.
ज्ञेयानि सप्त तान्येषु द्वीपेष्वेवं न यो मतः
These seven are to be understood in these islands; not any other is considered.
वैद्युतौ मानसश्चैव सप्तमः सुप्रभो मतः
Vaidhyuta and Mānasa, and the seventh is known as Suprabha.
आनन्दश्च शिवश्चैव क्षेमकश्च ध्रुवस्तथा
Ānanda, Śiva, Kṣemaka, and also Dhruva.
वर्णाश्रमविभागेन स्वधर्मो मुक्तये द्विजाः
By the division of class and stage of life, one's own duty leads to liberation, O twice-born.
अग्नीध्रस्य द्विजश्रेष्ठास्तन्नामानि निबोधत
O best of the twice-born, listen to the names of Agnīdhra's sons.
रम्यो हिरण्वांश्च कुरुर्भद्राश्वः केतुमाहलकः
Ramya, Hiraṇvān, Kuru, Bhadrāśva, Ketumāla, and Halaka.
विभज्य नवधा तेभ्यो यथान्यायं ददौ पुनः
He divided them into nine parts and gave them accordingly.
हेमकूटं ततो वर्षं ददौ किंपुरुषाय तु
Then he gave the land of Hemakūṭa to Kimpuruṣa.
इलावृताय प्रददौ मेरुमध्यमिलावृतम्
He gave Ilāvṛta, the central region of Meru, to Ilāvṛta.
श्वेतं यदुत्तरं वर्षं पित्रा दत्तं हिरण्वते
The northern land called Śveta was given by the father to Hiraṇvat.
गन्धमादनवर्षं तु केतुमालाय दत्तवान्
The land of Gandhamādana was given to Ketumāla.
संसारकष्टतां ज्ञात्वा तपस्तेपे वनं गतः
Realizing the hardship of worldly existence, he went to the forest and performed austerities.
