अपां भूणेश्च संयोगादोषध्यस्तास्तदाभवन्
From the union of water and earth, herbs then came into being.
ऋतुपुष्पफलैश्चैव वृक्षगुल्माश्च जज्ञिरे
Trees and shrubs also arose, bearing flowers and fruits in their seasons.
अवश्यं भाविनार्ऽथे न त्रेतायुगवशेन वै
This was destined to happen, not merely due to the course of the Tretā age.
वृक्षगुल्मौषधीश्चैव प्रसह्य तु यथाबलम्
Trees, shrubs, and herbs were forcibly taken according to strength.
पितामहनियोगेन दुदोह पृथिवीं पृथुः
By the command of the Grandfather, Pṛthu milked the earth.
वसुदारधनाद्यांस्तु बलात् कालबलेन तु
He extracted treasures and riches from the earth by force, through the power of time.
ससर्ज क्षत्रियान् ब्रह्मा ब्राह्मणानां हिताय च
Brahmā created the kṣatriyas for the welfare of the brāhmaṇas.
यज्ञप्रवर्तनं चैव पशुहिंसाविवर्जितम्
And he established the performance of sacrifice, free from the killing of animals.
रागो लोभस्तथा युद्धं तत्त्वानामविनिश्चयः
Passion, greed, conflict, and uncertainty regarding principles arose.
वेदव्यासैश्चतुर्धा तु व्यस्यते द्वापरादिषु
By Vyāsa, the Veda was divided into four parts in the Dvāpara and later ages.
मन्त्रब्राह्मणविन्यासैः स्वरवर्णविपर्ययैः
Through the arrangement of mantras and brāhmaṇas, and the alteration of tones and letters,
सामान्याद् वैकृताच्चैवदृष्टिभेदैः क्वचित् क्वचित्
And through general and specific changes, and differences of interpretation in various places.
इतिहासपुराणानि धर्मशास्त्राणि सुव्रत
O virtuous one, the histories, the Purāṇas, and the treatises on dharma—
वाङ्मनः कायजैर्दुः सैर्निर्वेदो जायते नृणाम्
Through suffering caused by speech, mind, and body, disillusionment arises in people.
विचारणाच्च वैराग्यं वैराग्याद् दोषदर्शनम्
From reflection comes detachment, and from detachment, the perception of faults.
एषा रजस्तमोयुक्ता वृत्तिर्वै द्वापरे स्मृता
This conduct, associated with passion and darkness, is said to prevail in the Dvāpara age.
द्वापरे व्याकुलीभूत्वा प्रणश्यति कलौ युगे
In Dvāpara, becoming agitated, it perishes in the Kali age.
साधयन्ति नरा नित्यं तमसा व्याकुलीकृताः
Men, constantly disturbed by darkness, strive for it.
अनावृष्टिभयं घोरं देशानां च विपर्ययः
There will be dreadful fear of drought and calamity in the lands.
अनृतं वदन्ति ते लुब्धास्तिष्ये जाताः सुदुः प्रजाः
Those greedy ones speak falsehood; wicked people are born, bringing great suffering.
विप्राणां कर्मदोषैश्च प्रजानां जायते भयम्
From the faults in the actions of the Brāhmaṇas, fear arises among the people.
यजन्त्यन्यायतो वेदान् पठन्ते चाल्पबुद्धयः
They perform sacrifices improperly, and those of little intelligence recite the Vedas.
भविष्यति कलौ तस्मिञ् शयनासनभोजनैः
In that Kali age, there will be indulgence in lying down, sitting, and eating.
भ्रूणहत्या वीरहत्या प्रजायेते नरेश्वर
O lord of men, the killing of embryos and heroes will occur.
अन्यानि चैव कर्माणि न कुर्वन्ति द्विजातयः
And the twice-born will not perform other prescribed actions.
आम्नायधर्मशास्त्राणि पुराणानि कलौ युगे
The Vedas, treatises on dharma, and Purāṇas in the Kali age—
स्वधर्मे ऽभिरुचिर्नैव ब्राह्मणानां प्रिजायते
Among Brāhmaṇas, no delight arises in their own dharma.
बहुयाचनको लोको भविष्यति परस्परम्
People will become greatly dependent on mutual begging.
प्रमदाः केशशूलिन्यो भविष्यन्ति कलौ युगे
Women will wear their hair loose in the Kali age.
शूद्रा धर्मं चरिष्यन्ति युगान्ते समुपस्थिते
At the end of the age, Śūdras will practice dharma.
