उवाच मां महादेवः प्रीतः प्रीतेन चेतसा
The great god, pleased and with a joyful heart, spoke to me.
वत्स वत्स हरे विश्वं पालयैतच्चराचरम्
Child, child, O Hari, protect this entire universe, both moving and unmoving.
सर्गरक्षालयगुणैर्निर्गुणो ऽपि निरञ्जनः
Though without attributes and untouched, he possesses the qualities of creation, preservation, and dissolution.
भविष्यत्येष भगवांस्तव पुत्रः सनातनः
This blessed one will become your son, eternal in nature.
शूलपाणिर्भविष्यामि क्रोधजस्तव पुत्रकः
I shall appear as your son, born from wrath, holding the trident.
अनुगृह्य च मां देवस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
After blessing me, the god vanished right there.
लिङ्ग तल्लयनाद् ब्रह्मन् ब्रह्मणः परमं वपुः
O Brahman, by merging into that liṅga, the supreme form of Brahman is attained.
एतद् बुध्यन्ति योगज्ञा न देवा न च दानवाः
This is understood by those who know yoga, not by gods nor by demons.
येन सूक्ष्ममचिन्त्यं तत् पश्यन्ति ज्ञान वक्षुषः
By which the subtle and inconceivable is seen by those endowed with knowledge.
महादेवाय रुद्राय देवदेवाय लिङ्गिने
Salutations to Mahādeva, to Rudra, to the god of gods, to the one with the liṅga.
विभीषणाय शान्ताय स्थाणवे हेतवे नमः
Homage to the formidable, the peaceful, the steadfast, the cause of all.
शङ्कराय महेशाय गिरीशाय शिवाय च
To Śaṅkara, to Maheśa, to the lord of mountains, and to Śiva.
संसारसागरादस्मादचिरादुत्तरिष्यसि
You will soon cross over this ocean of worldly existence.
जगाम मनसा देवमीशानं विश्वतोमुखम्
He approached, in mind, the god Īśāna, who faces all directions.
जगाम चेप्सितं देशं देवदेवस्य शूलिनः
He went to the desired place of the god of gods, the wielder of the trident.
शृणुयाद् वा पठेद् वापि सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
Whoever hears or recites this is freed from all sins.
वासुदेवस्य विप्रेन्द्राः पापं मुञ्चिति मानवः
O best of Brahmins, a person is freed from sin by Vāsudeva.
एवमाह महायोगी कृष्णद्वैपायनः प्रभुः
Thus spoke the great yogi, the lord Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana.
अजीजनन्महात्मानं साम्बमात्मजमुत्तमम्
She gave birth to Sāmba, the noble and excellent son.
तावुभौ गुणसंपन्नौ कृष्णस्यैवापरे तनू
Both were endowed with virtues, and were other bodies of Kṛṣṇa himself.
विजित्य लीलया शक्रं जित्वा बाणं महासुरम्
Having effortlessly conquered Indra and defeated the great demon Bāṇa,
चक्रे नारायणो गन्तुं स्वस्थानं बुद्धिमुत्तमाम्
Nārāyaṇa resolved, with supreme wisdom, to return to his own abode.
आजग्मुर्द्वारकां द्रष्टुं कृतकार्यं सनातनम्
He, the eternal one, whose task was accomplished, came to Dvārakā to be seen.
आसनेषूपविष्टान् वै सह रामेण धीमता
He sat upon the seats together with the wise Rāma.
कृतानि सर्वकार्याणि प्रसीदध्वं मुनीश्वराः
All deeds have been accomplished; be pleased, O best of sages.
भविष्यन्ति जनाः सर्वे ह्यस्मिन् पापानुवर्तिनः
In this age, all people will indeed follow after sin.
येनेमे कलिजैः पापैर्मुच्यन्ते हि द्विजोत्तमाः
By this, the best of twice-born are freed from the sins born of Kali.
तेषां नश्यतु तत् पापं भक्तानां पुरुषोत्तमे
Let that sin of those devoted to the Supreme Person perish.
विधाना वेददृष्टेन ते गमिष्यन्ति तत् पदम्
By the procedures prescribed in the Vedas, they will reach that state.
तेषां नारायणे भक्तिर्भविष्यति कलौ युगे
In the Kali age, they will have devotion to Nārāyaṇa.
