अन्तमस्य विजानीम ऊर्ध्वं गच्छे ऽहमित्यजः
Let me know its end—so thinking, I, the unborn, ascended upward.
पितामहो ऽप्यहं नान्तं ज्ञातवन्तौ समाः शतम्
Even I, the grandsire, did not know its end, though searching for a hundred years.
मायया मोहितौ तस्य ध्यायन्तौ विश्वमीश्वरम्
Bewildered by his māyā, we both meditated on the Lord of the universe.
प्रह्वाञ्जलिपुटोपेतौ शंभुं तुष्टुवतुः परम्
With hands joined in reverence, we praised the supreme Shambhu.

भाति देवो महायोगी सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभः
The god, the great yogi, shines with a radiance equal to ten million suns.
सहस्त्रहस्तचरणः सूर्यसोमाग्निलोचनः
He has a thousand hands and feet, and his eyes are the sun, moon, and fire.
व्यालयज्ञोपवीतश्च मेघदुन्दुभिनिः स्वनः
He wears a serpent as his sacred thread, and his voice resounds like a thundercloud drum.
पश्येतं मां महादेवं भयं सर्वं प्रमुच्यताम्
Behold me, the great god; let all fear be released.
वामपार्श्वे च मे विष्णुः पालको हृदये हरः
On my left side is Viṣṇu, the protector; in my heart is Hara.
आलिङ्ग्य देवं ब्रह्माणं प्रसादाभिमुखो ऽभवत्
Embracing the god Brahmā, he became inclined to grace.
ऊचतुः प्रेक्ष्य तद्वक्त्रं नारायणपितामहौ
Seeing that face, Nārāyaṇa and Pitāmaha spoke.
भक्तिर्भवतु नौ नित्यं त्वयि देव महेश्वरे
May devotion to you, O great god, be constant for us.
उवाच मां महादेवः प्रीतः प्रीतेन चेतसा
The great god, pleased and with a joyful heart, spoke to me.
वत्स वत्स हरे विश्वं पालयैतच्चराचरम्
Child, child, O Hari, protect this entire universe, both moving and unmoving.
सर्गरक्षालयगुणैर्निर्गुणो ऽपि निरञ्जनः
Though without attributes and untouched, he possesses the qualities of creation, preservation, and dissolution.
भविष्यत्येष भगवांस्तव पुत्रः सनातनः
This blessed one will become your son, eternal in nature.
शूलपाणिर्भविष्यामि क्रोधजस्तव पुत्रकः
I shall appear as your son, born from wrath, holding the trident.
अनुगृह्य च मां देवस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
After blessing me, the god vanished right there.
लिङ्ग तल्लयनाद् ब्रह्मन् ब्रह्मणः परमं वपुः
O Brahman, by merging into that liṅga, the supreme form of Brahman is attained.
एतद् बुध्यन्ति योगज्ञा न देवा न च दानवाः
This is understood by those who know yoga, not by gods nor by demons.
येन सूक्ष्ममचिन्त्यं तत् पश्यन्ति ज्ञान वक्षुषः
By which the subtle and inconceivable is seen by those endowed with knowledge.
महादेवाय रुद्राय देवदेवाय लिङ्गिने
Salutations to Mahādeva, to Rudra, to the god of gods, to the one with the liṅga.
