सुरेशसदृशं पुत्रं देहि दानवसूदन
"Grant me, O slayer of the Dānavas, a son equal to the lord of the gods."
समारेभे तपः कर्तुं तपोनिधिररिन्दमः
The subduer of enemies, the treasure of austerity, resolved to perform penance.
दृष्ट्वा लेभे सुतं रुद्रं तप्त्वा तीव्रं महत् तपः
Having performed severe and intense austerity, he obtained Rudra as a son.
तताप घोरं पुत्रार्थं निदानं तपसस्तपः
For the sake of a son, he performed terrible austerity, the very source of penance.
चचार स्वात्मनो मूलं बोधयन् भावमैश्वरम्
He practiced, awakening his own root, the divine essence of consciousness.
आश्रमं तूपमन्योर्वै मुनीन्द्रस्य महात्मनः
He went to the hermitage of Upamanyu, the great-souled chief of sages.
शङ्खचक्रगदापाणिः श्रीवत्सकृतलक्षणः
Bearing conch, discus, and mace in his hands, marked with the Śrīvatsa sign.
ऋषीणामाश्रमैर्जुष्टं वेदघोषनिनादितम्
That place was frequented by the hermitages of sages and resounded with the chants of the Vedas.
विमलस्वादुपानीयैः सरोभिरुपशोभितम्
It was adorned with pure, sweet, and cool lakes.
ऋषिकैरृषिपुत्रैश्च महामुनिगणैस्तथा
There were sages, their sons, and also assemblies of great ascetics.
योगिभिर्ध्याननिरतैर्नासाग्रगतलोचनैः
There were yogis devoted to meditation, their gaze fixed at the tips of their noses.
नदीभिरभितो जुष्टं जापकैर्ब्रह्मवादिभिः
It was surrounded by rivers, frequented by reciters and speakers on Brahman.
प्रशान्तैः सत्यसंकल्पैर्निः शोकैर्निरुपद्रवैः
By those who are peaceful, resolute in truth, free from sorrow, and undisturbed.
सेवितं तापसैर्नित्य ज्ञानिभिर्ब्रह्मचारिभिः
It is always served by ascetics, by the wise, and by those devoted to celibacy.
गङ्गा भगवती नित्यं वहत्येवाघनाशिनी
The divine Ganga ever flows there, destroyer of all sins.
प्रणामेनाथ वचसा पूजयामास माधवः
Then Madhava worshipped with words and with reverent salutation.
प्रणेमुर्भक्तिसंयुक्ता योगिनां परमं गुरुम्
Those filled with devotion bowed to the supreme teacher of yogis.
प्रोचुरन्योन्यमव्यक्तमादिदेवं महामुनिम्
They addressed one another about the unmanifest, the primeval god, the great sage.
अगच्छत्यधुना देवः पुराणपुरुषः स्वयम्
Now the god himself, the ancient person, came there.
अमूर्तो मूर्तिमान् भूत्वा मुनीन् द्रष्टुमिहागतः
Formless, then taking form, he arrived here to see the sages.
अनादिरक्षयो ऽनन्तो महाभूतो महेश्वरः
Beginningless, undecaying, infinite, the great lord of beings, Maheshvara.
ययौ स तूर्णं गोविन्दः स्थानं तस्य महात्मनः
Govinda quickly went to the abode of that great soul.
चकार देवकीसूनुर्देवर्षिपितृतर्पणम्
The son of Devaki performed offerings to the gods, sages, and ancestors.
लिङ्गानि पूजयामास शंभोरमिततेजसः
He worshipped the emblems of Shambhu, of immeasurable brilliance.
पूजयाञ्चक्रिरे पुष्पैरक्षतैस्तत्र वासिनः
The residents there performed worship with flowers and unbroken rice.
तस्थिरे निश्चलाः सर्वे शुभाङ्गं तन्निवासिनः
All those dwelling there stood motionless, with auspicious bodies.
दृष्ट्वा समीहितान्यासन् निष्क्रामन्ति पुराहिरम्
Seeing the desired rites accomplished, they began to depart from the ancient city.
आदाय पुष्पवर्याणि मुनीन्द्रस्याविशद् गृहम्
Taking the best flowers, he entered the house of the chief sage.
जटाचीरधरं शान्तं ननाम शिरसा मुनिम्
He bowed his head to the sage, calm, wearing matted locks and bark garments.
आसने चासयामास योगिनां प्रथमातिथिम्
He seated the foremost guest of the yogis upon a seat.
