प्रीतिः संजायते मह्यं स्थातव्यं वत्सरं पुनः
'Affection has arisen in me; I must stay for another year.'
आगमिष्यामि भूयो ऽत्र तन्मे ऽनुज्ञातुमर्हसि
'I will come again here; you should grant me permission for that.'
नान्ययाप्सरसा तावद् रन्तव्यं भवत् पुनः
'Until then, you must not make love with any other apsaras.'
गत्वा पतिव्रतां पत्नीं दृष्ट्वा बीतो ऽभवन्नृपः
Having gone and seen his devoted wife, the king became afraid.
भीतं प्रसन्नया प्राह वाचा पीनपयोधरा
Seeing him fearful, she of full breasts spoke to him gently.
तद् ब्रूहि मे यथा तत्त्वं न राज्ञां कीर्तये त्विदम्
'Tell me the truth of this; I will not report it to the kings.'
नोवाच किञ्चिन्नृपतिर्ज्ञानदृष्ट्या विवेद सा
The king spoke nothing, nor did he perceive her through the vision of knowledge.
भीते त्वयि महाराज राष्ट्रं ते नाशमेष्यति
But if you are afraid, O great king, your kingdom will come to ruin.
गत्वा कण्वाश्रमं पुण्यं दृष्ट्वा तत्र महामुनिम्
Having gone to the sacred hermitage of Kanva and seen the great sage there,
जगाम हिमवत्पृष्ठं समुद्दिश्य महाबलः
The mighty one set out toward the slopes of the Himalayas.
भ्राजमानं श्रिया व्योम्नि भूषितं दिव्यमालया
Radiant with splendor in the sky, adorned with a divine garland,
उर्वशीं तां मनश्चक्रे तस्या एवेयमर्हति
He fixed his mind on Urvashi, thinking, 'She alone is worthy of this.'
चकार सुमहद् युद्धं मालामादातुमुद्यतः
He engaged in a great battle, striving to seize the garland.
जगाम तामप्सरसं कालिन्दीं द्रष्टुमादरात्
He went with eagerness to see that apsaras, Kalindi.
बभ्राम सकलां पृथ्वीं सप्तद्वीपसमन्विताम्
He wandered over the whole earth, together with its seven continents.
जगाम शैलप्रवरं हेमकूटमिति श्रुतम्
He went to the foremost of mountains, known as Hemakuta.
कामं संदधिरे घोरं भूषितं चित्रमालया
They indulged in fierce desire, adorned with a wondrous garland.
न पश्यति स्मताः सर्वागिरिशृङ्गाणिजग्मिवान्
Overcome by passion, he did not see any of the mountain peaks as he went.
देवलोकं महामेरुं ययौ देवपराक्रमः
With divine might, he went to the world of the gods, to great Meru.
भेजे शृङ्गाण्यतिक्रम्य स्वबाहुबलभावितः
Surpassing the peaks, relying on the strength of his own arms, he attained them.
दृष्टवाननवद्याङ्गीं तस्यै मालां ददौ पुनः
He saw her, flawless in form, and again gave her the garland.
रेमे कृतार्थमात्मानं जानानः सुचिरं तया
Knowing himself fulfilled, he enjoyed a long time with her.
किं कृतं भवता पूर्वं पुरीं गत्वा वृथा नृप
What did you accomplish before, O king, going to the city in vain?
कण्वस्य दर्शनं चैव मालापहरणं तथा
The sight of Kanva, and likewise the taking of the garland.
शापं दास्यति ते कण्वो ममापि भवतः प्रिया
Kanva will pronounce a curse upon you, and your beloved will be taken from you as well.
न तत्यजाथ तत्पार्श्वं तत्र संन्यस्तमानसः
You did not leave her side, remaining there with your mind firmly set.
सुरोमशं पिङ्गलाक्षं दर्शयामास सर्वदा
He always revealed Suromasha, whose eyes were tawny and hair was fine.
धिङ्मामिति विनिश्चित्यतपः कर्तुं समारभत्
Thinking, 'Fie upon me,' he resolved and began to undertake austerities.
भूय एव द्वादशकं वायुभक्षो ऽभवन्नृपः
Once again, for twelve years, the king lived on air alone.
वासमप्सरसा भूयस्तपोयोगमनुत्तमम्
He dwelt with an apsaras, practicing supreme austerity and yoga.
