प्रपन्नः शरणं तेन प्रसादो मे कृतः शुभः
He sought refuge with me, and by that, I received auspicious grace.
कथं केन विधानेन संपूज्यो हरिरीश्वरः
By what means and in what manner should Hari, the Lord, be worshipped?
सर्वमेतन्ममाचक्ष्व परं कौतूहलं हि मे
Tell me all this; I have the highest curiosity about it.
स विष्णुः सर्वभूतात्मा तमाश्रित्य विमुच्यते
That Viṣṇu, the soul of all beings—by taking refuge in him, one is liberated.
अकामहतभावेन समाराध्यो न चान्यथा
He must be worshipped with a mind untainted by desire, and not otherwise.
शूराद्यैः पूजितो विप्रा जगामाथ स्वमालयम्
Having been worshipped by heroes and others, O brāhmaṇas, he then went to his own abode.
यज्ञेन यज्ञगम्यं तं निष्कामा रुद्रमव्ययम्
Through sacrifice, they worshipped Rudra—the imperishable one, attainable by sacrifice, free from desire.
गौतमो ऽत्रिरगस्त्यश्च सर्वे रुद्रपरायणाः
Gautama, Atri, and Agastya—all were devoted to Rudra.
याजयामास भूतादिमादिदेवं जनार्दनम्
He caused sacrifices to be performed for Janārdana, the primeval god, the origin of beings.
आविरासीत् स भगवान् तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
That blessed Lord appeared, and it was as if a wonder had manifested.
सर्वपापविमुक्तात्मा विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति
Freed from all sin, he goes to the world of Viṣṇu.
शतपुत्रास्तु तस्यासन् तालजङ्घाः प्रकीर्तिताः
She had a hundred sons, renowned as the Tālavaṅghas.
वृषप्रभृतयश्चान्ये यादवाः पुण्यकर्मिणः
And others, beginning with Vṛṣa, were Yādavas, performers of virtuous deeds.
मधोः पुत्रशतं त्वासीद् वृषणस्तस्य वंशभाक्
Madhu had a hundred sons; among them, Vṛṣaṇa became the head of the lineage.
दुर्जयस्तस्य पुत्रो ऽबूत् सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः
His son was Durjaya, skilled in all branches of knowledge.
पतिव्रतासीत् पतिना स्वधर्मपरिपालिका
His wife was devoted to her husband, upholding her own duty.
अपश्यदुर्वशीं देवीं गायन्तीं मधुरस्वनाम्
They saw the goddess Urvaśī, singing with a sweet voice.
प्रोवाच सुचिरं कालं देवि रन्तुं मयार्ऽहसि
He spoke after a long time, 'O goddess, you should make love with me.'
रेमे तेन चिरं कालं कामदेवमिवापरम्
He enjoyed her company for a long time, as if she were another god of love.
गमिष्यामि पुरीं रम्यां हसन्ती साब्रवीद् वचः
She, smiling, said these words: 'I will go to the delightful city.'
प्रीतिः संजायते मह्यं स्थातव्यं वत्सरं पुनः
'Affection has arisen in me; I must stay for another year.'
आगमिष्यामि भूयो ऽत्र तन्मे ऽनुज्ञातुमर्हसि
'I will come again here; you should grant me permission for that.'
नान्ययाप्सरसा तावद् रन्तव्यं भवत् पुनः
'Until then, you must not make love with any other apsaras.'
गत्वा पतिव्रतां पत्नीं दृष्ट्वा बीतो ऽभवन्नृपः
Having gone and seen his devoted wife, the king became afraid.
भीतं प्रसन्नया प्राह वाचा पीनपयोधरा
Seeing him fearful, she of full breasts spoke to him gently.
तद् ब्रूहि मे यथा तत्त्वं न राज्ञां कीर्तये त्विदम्
'Tell me the truth of this; I will not report it to the kings.'
नोवाच किञ्चिन्नृपतिर्ज्ञानदृष्ट्या विवेद सा
The king spoke nothing, nor did he perceive her through the vision of knowledge.
भीते त्वयि महाराज राष्ट्रं ते नाशमेष्यति
But if you are afraid, O great king, your kingdom will come to ruin.
गत्वा कण्वाश्रमं पुण्यं दृष्ट्वा तत्र महामुनिम्
Having gone to the sacred hermitage of Kanva and seen the great sage there,
जगाम हिमवत्पृष्ठं समुद्दिश्य महाबलः
The mighty one set out toward the slopes of the Himalayas.
