विसर्जयित्वा संपूज्य त्रिधन्वानमथाब्रवीत्
Having dismissed and honored them, he then spoke to Tridhanvan.
प्राणं बृहन्तं पुरुषमादित्यान्तरसंस्थितम्
The great vital being, the Person, situated within the sun—
चातुर्वर्ण्यसमायुक्तमशेषं क्षितिमण्डलम्
The entire earth, endowed with the fourfold varṇa system—
जगामारण्यमनघस्तपश्चर्तुमनुत्तमम्
He went to the forest, sinless, to perform supreme austerity.
कन्दमूलफलाहारो मुन्यन्नैरयजत् सुरान्
Sustained by roots, tubers, and fruits, he worshipped the gods with ascetic food.
जजाप मनसा देवीं सावित्ररिं वेदमातरम्
He mentally recited the Sāvitrī, the goddess, mother of the Vedas.
हिरण्यगर्भो विश्वात्मा तं देशमगमत् स्वयम्
Hiraṇyagarbha, the soul of the universe, himself went to that place.
ननाम शिरसा तस्य पादयोर्नाम कीर्तयन्
He bowed his head at his feet, reciting his name.
हिर्ण्यमूर्तये तुभ्यं सहस्त्राक्षाय वेधसे
To you, of golden form, thousand-eyed, creator, I offer praise.
सांख्ययोगाधिगम्याय नमस्ते ज्ञानमूर्तये
Salutations to you, embodiment of knowledge, attainable through Sāṃkhya and Yoga.
पुरुषाय पुराणाय योगिनां गुरवे नमः
Salutations to the primeval person, ancient one, teacher of yogis.
वरं वरय भद्रं ते वरदो ऽस्मीत्यभाषत
He spoke: 'Choose a boon, auspicious one; I am the giver of boons.'
भूयो वर्षशतं साग्रं तावदायुर्भवेन्मम
May my lifespan be extended by another hundred years, with some extra.
स्पृष्ट्वा कराभ्यां सुप्रीतस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
Pleased, he touched him with his hands and vanished there itself.
शान्तस्त्रिषवणस्नायी कन्दमूलफलाशनः
Peaceful, bathing thrice daily, subsisting on roots, bulbs, and fruits.
प्रादुरासीन्महायोगी भानोर्मण्डलमध्यतः
A great yogi appeared in the midst of the sun's orb.
स्वयंभुवमनाद्यन्तं ब्रह्माणं विस्मयं गतः
Brahmā, self-born, without beginning or end, was struck with wonder.
क्षणादपश्यत् पुरुषं तमेव परमेश्वरम्
In a moment, he saw that very supreme lord, the person.
चन्द्रावयवलक्षमाणं नरनारीतनुं हरम्
He saw Hara, with a body both male and female, shining like the moon.
रक्ताम्बरधरं रक्तं रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनम्
Wearing red garments, red in hue, adorned with red garlands and ointments.
ननाम शिरसा रुद्रं सावित्र्यानेन चैव हि
He bowed his head to Rudra, with this Sāvitrī prayer.
त्रयीमयाय रुद्राय कालरूपाय हेतवे
To Rudra, composed of the three Vedas, form of time, cause of all, salutations.
इमानि मे रहस्यानि नामानि शृणु चानघ
Hear these secret names of mine, O sinless one.
नमस्कुरुष्व नृपते एभिर्मां सततं शुचिः
O king, always offer salutations to me with these, remaining pure.
जपस्वानन्यचेतस्को मय्यासक्तमना नृप
Recite with unwavering mind, your heart absorbed in me, O King.
जपेदामरणाद् रुद्रं स याति परमं पदम्
Whoever recites Rudra until death attains the supreme state.
पुनः संवत्सरशतं राज्ञे ह्यायुरकल्पयत्
Again, he granted the king a lifespan of one hundred years.
क्षणादन्तर्दधे रुद्रस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
In a moment, Rudra vanished; it appeared as a wonder.
भस्मच्छन्नस्त्रिषवणं स्नात्वा शान्तः समाहितः
Covered in ashes, having bathed thrice, peaceful and composed—
योगप्रवृत्तिरभवत् कालात् कालात्मकं परम्
The practice of yoga arose, in time, toward the supreme essence of time.
