कैकसी जनयत् पुत्रं रावणं राक्षसाधिपम्
Kaikasi gave birth to a son, Ravana, the lord of the Rakshasas.
पुष्पोत्कटा व्यजनयत् पुत्रान् विश्रवसः शुभान्
Pushpotkata bore to Vishravas noble sons.
कुम्भीनसीं तथा कन्यां राकायां शृणुत प्रजाः
Hear also of the offspring of Kumbhinasi and likewise of Raka.
सर्वे तपोबलोत्कृष्टा रुद्रभक्ताः सुभीषणाः
All were exalted by the power of austerity, devoted to Rudra, and very fearsome.
भूताः पिशाचाः सर्पाश्च शूकरा हस्तिनस्तथा
Beings, spirits, serpents, boars, and elephants as well.
मरीचेः कश्यपः पुत्रः स्वयमेव प्रजापतिः
Kashyapa, son of Marichi, himself became a progenitor.
स्वाध्याययोगनिरतो हरभक्तो महाद्युतिः
Devoted to study and yoga, a devotee of Hara, he was of great brilliance.
कृशाश्वस्य तु विप्रेन्द्रा घृताच्यामिति मे श्रुतम्
Of Krishashva, O best of Brahmins, Ghritachi was the wife, so I have heard.
वेदवेदाङ्गनिरतांस्तपसा हतकिल्बिषान्
They were devoted to the Vedas and its branches, their sins destroyed by austerity.
ऊर्ध्वरेतास्तत्र मुनिः शापाद् दक्षस्य नारदः
There, the sage Narada, due to Daksha's curse, became one with upward-flowing seed.
शशाप नारदं दक्षः क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः
Daksha, his eyes reddened with anger, cursed Narada.
क्षयं नीतास्त्वशेषेण निरपत्यो भविष्यति
All his descendants were destroyed; he would become without offspring.
शक्तेः पराशरः श्रीमान् सर्वज्ञस्तपतां वरः
Śrīmān Parāśara, the illustrious sage, master of all knowledge and foremost among ascetics, was born of Śakti.
लेभे त्वप्रतिमं पुत्रं कृष्णाद्वैपायनं प्रभुम्
He obtained an incomparable son, the lord Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana.
अंशांशेनावतीर्योर्व्यां स्वं प्राप परमं पदम्
Having descended to earth with a portion of his own essence, he attained his supreme state.
कन्या कीर्तिमती चैव योगमाता धृतव्रता
And the daughter, Kīrtimatī, steadfast in her vows, became the mother of Yoga.
अत ऊर्ध्वं निबोधध्वं कश्यपाद्राजसंततिम्
Now, henceforth, listen to the royal lineage descending from Kaśyapa.
संज्ञा राज्ञी प्रभा छाया पुत्रांस्तासां निबोधत
Learn of the children of Saṃjñā, the queen, Prabhā, and Chāyā.
यमं च यमुनां चैव राज्ञी रैवतमेव च
The queen bore Yama and Yamunā, as well as Raivata.
शनिं च तपतीं चैव विष्टिं चैव यथाक्रमम्
She also bore Śani, Tapatī, and Viṣṭi, each in due order.
इक्ष्वाकुर्नभगश्चैव धृष्टः शर्यातिरेव च
Ikṣvāku, Nabhaga, Dhṛṣṭa, and also Śaryāti,
पृषध्रश्च महातेजा नवैते शक्रसन्निभाः
And Pṛṣadhra, of great splendor—these nine were like Indra in might.
बुधस्य गत्वा भवनं सोमपुत्रेण संगता
Having gone to the abode of Budha, she united with the son of Soma.
पितॄणां तृप्तिकर्तारं बुधादिति हि नः श्रुतम्
We have heard that Budha is called the one who satisfies the ancestors.
इला पुत्रत्रयं लेभे पुनः स्त्रीत्वमविन्दत
Ilā obtained three sons, and again attained womanhood.
सर्वे ते ऽप्रतिमप्रख्याः प्रपन्नाः कमलोद्भवम्
All of them, renowned as unparalleled, approached the lotus-born one.
ज्येष्ठः पुत्रशतस्यापि दश पञ्च च तत्सुताः
Of the hundred sons, the eldest and also ten and five were his descendants.
सुयोधनात् पृथुः श्रीमान् विश्वकश्च पृथोः सुतः
From Suyodhana came Pṛthu, illustrious, and from Pṛthu, Viśvaka.
स गोकर्णमनुप्राप्य युवनाश्वः प्रतापवान्
The mighty Yuvanāśva, having reached Gokarṇa,
अपृच्छत् कर्मणा केन धार्मिकं प्राप्नुयात् सुतम्
Asked by what action one might obtain a righteous son.
