कश्यपो गोत्रकामस्तु चचार सुमहत् तपः
Desiring offspring, Kaśyapa performed great austerity.
वत्सरश्चासितश्चैव तावुभौ ब्रह्मवादिनौ
Vatsara and Āsita, both expounders of Brahman, were born.
रैभ्यस्य जज्ञिरे रैभ्याः पुत्रा द्युतिमतां वराः
From Raibhya were born sons of Raibhya, the best among the illustrious.
सुमेधा जनयामास पुत्रान् वै कुण्डपायिनः
Sumedhā gave birth to sons who were Kuṇḍapāyins.
नाम्ना वै देवलः पुत्रो योगाचार्यो महातपाः
By name, Devala was the son, a master of yoga and great austerity.
प्रसादात् पार्वतीशस्य योगमुत्तममाप्तवान्
By the grace of Parvati's Lord, he attained the highest yoga.
नरप्रकृतयो विप्राः पुलस्त्यस्य वदामि वः
O Brahmins, I will tell you of the descendants of Pulastya, who were of human nature.
पुलस्त्याय स राजर्षिस्तां कन्यां प्रत्यपादयत्
To Pulastya, that royal sage gave his daughter.
तस्य पत्न्यश्चतस्त्रस्तु पौलस्त्यकुलवर्धिकाः
He had four wives, enhancers of the Paulastya lineage.
रूपलावण्यसंपन्नास्तासां वै शृणुत प्रजाः
They were endowed with beauty and charm; listen to their offspring.
कैकसी जनयत् पुत्रं रावणं राक्षसाधिपम्
Kaikasi gave birth to a son, Ravana, the lord of the Rakshasas.
पुष्पोत्कटा व्यजनयत् पुत्रान् विश्रवसः शुभान्
Pushpotkata bore to Vishravas noble sons.
कुम्भीनसीं तथा कन्यां राकायां शृणुत प्रजाः
Hear also of the offspring of Kumbhinasi and likewise of Raka.
सर्वे तपोबलोत्कृष्टा रुद्रभक्ताः सुभीषणाः
All were exalted by the power of austerity, devoted to Rudra, and very fearsome.
भूताः पिशाचाः सर्पाश्च शूकरा हस्तिनस्तथा
Beings, spirits, serpents, boars, and elephants as well.
मरीचेः कश्यपः पुत्रः स्वयमेव प्रजापतिः
Kashyapa, son of Marichi, himself became a progenitor.
स्वाध्याययोगनिरतो हरभक्तो महाद्युतिः
Devoted to study and yoga, a devotee of Hara, he was of great brilliance.
कृशाश्वस्य तु विप्रेन्द्रा घृताच्यामिति मे श्रुतम्
Of Krishashva, O best of Brahmins, Ghritachi was the wife, so I have heard.
वेदवेदाङ्गनिरतांस्तपसा हतकिल्बिषान्
They were devoted to the Vedas and its branches, their sins destroyed by austerity.
ऊर्ध्वरेतास्तत्र मुनिः शापाद् दक्षस्य नारदः
There, the sage Narada, due to Daksha's curse, became one with upward-flowing seed.
शशाप नारदं दक्षः क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः
Daksha, his eyes reddened with anger, cursed Narada.
क्षयं नीतास्त्वशेषेण निरपत्यो भविष्यति
All his descendants were destroyed; he would become without offspring.
शक्तेः पराशरः श्रीमान् सर्वज्ञस्तपतां वरः
Śrīmān Parāśara, the illustrious sage, master of all knowledge and foremost among ascetics, was born of Śakti.
लेभे त्वप्रतिमं पुत्रं कृष्णाद्वैपायनं प्रभुम्
He obtained an incomparable son, the lord Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana.
अंशांशेनावतीर्योर्व्यां स्वं प्राप परमं पदम्
Having descended to earth with a portion of his own essence, he attained his supreme state.
कन्या कीर्तिमती चैव योगमाता धृतव्रता
And the daughter, Kīrtimatī, steadfast in her vows, became the mother of Yoga.
अत ऊर्ध्वं निबोधध्वं कश्यपाद्राजसंततिम्
Now, henceforth, listen to the royal lineage descending from Kaśyapa.
संज्ञा राज्ञी प्रभा छाया पुत्रांस्तासां निबोधत
Learn of the children of Saṃjñā, the queen, Prabhā, and Chāyā.
यमं च यमुनां चैव राज्ञी रैवतमेव च
The queen bore Yama and Yamunā, as well as Raivata.
शनिं च तपतीं चैव विष्टिं चैव यथाक्रमम्
She also bore Śani, Tapatī, and Viṣṭi, each in due order.
