प्रह्लादमसुरं वृद्धं प्रणम्याह पितामहम्
Prahlada, the aged asura, after bowing, spoke to the grandsire.
किमुत्पाता भवेत् कार्यमस्माकं किंनिमित्तकाः
What are these omens? What should we do? For what reason have they arisen?
नमस्कृत्य हृषीकेशमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
After bowing to Hrishikesha, he spoke these words.
दधारासुरनाशार्थं माता तं त्रिदिवौकसाम्
The mother bore him for the destruction of the asuras, for the dwellers of heaven.
स वासुदेवो देवानां मातुर्देहं समाविशत्
That Vasudeva entered the body of his mother, for the sake of the gods.
स विष्णुरदितेर्देहं स्वेच्छयाद्य समाविशत्
That Vishnu entered the body of Aditi today, by his own will.
सो ऽवतीर्णो महायोगी पुराणपुरुषो हरिः
That great yogi, the ancient person, Hari, descended.
सत्तामात्रात्मरूपो ऽसौ विष्णुरंशेन जायते
He, whose form is the very essence of being, is born as a portion of Vishnu.
माया भगवती लक्ष्मीः सो ऽवतीर्णो जनार्दनः
Maya, the blessed Lakshmi, and Janardana have descended.
ब्रह्मा संजायते विष्णुरंशेनैकेन सत्त्वभृत्
Brahma is born, the sustainer of existence, from a single portion of Vishnu.
तमेव गच्छ शरणं ततो यास्यसि निर्वृतिम्
Seek refuge in him alone; then you will attain peace.
जगाम शरणं विश्वं पालयामास धर्मतः
He went to the refuge of the universe and protected it according to righteousness.
असूत कश्यपाच्चैनं देवमातादितिः स्वयम्
From Kaśyapa, the mother of the gods, Aditi, herself gave birth to him.
नीलमेघप्रतीकाशं भ्राजमानं श्रियावृतम्
He appeared like a dark raincloud, radiant and adorned with splendor.
उपेन्द्रमिन्द्रप्रमुखा ब्रह्मा चर्षिगमैर्वृतः
Upendra, surrounded by Indra and the foremost gods, by Brahmā and the seers,
समाचारं भरद्वाजात् त्रिलोकाय प्रदर्शयन्
Demonstrating proper conduct to the three worlds, as taught by Bharadvāja,
स यत् प्रमाणं कुरुते लोकस्तदनुवर्तते
Whatever standard he establishes, the world follows that.
यज्ञैर्यज्ञेश्वरं विष्णुमर्चयामास सर्वगम्
Through sacrifices, they worshipped Viṣṇu, the lord of sacrifice, who pervades all.
ब्रह्मर्षयः समाजग्मुर्यज्ञवाटं महात्मनः
The Brahmarṣis assembled at the sacrificial ground of the great-souled one.
आस्थाय वामनं रूपं यज्ञदेशमथागमत्
Assuming the form of Vāmana, he then arrived at the place of sacrifice.
ब्राह्मणो जटिलो वेदानुद्गिरन् भस्ममण्डितः
A brāhmaṇa, with matted hair, reciting the Vedas, adorned with ashes,
स्वपादैर्विमितं देशमयाचत बलिं त्रिभिः
He requested from Bali, with three steps of his own feet, a measured portion of land.
आचामयित्वा भृङ्गारमादाय स्वर्णनिर्मितम्
Having ritually purified himself, he took a golden ladle.
निपातयामास जलं सुशीतलम्
He poured out water, very cool and pure.
प्रकर्तुकामः शरणं प्रपन्नम्
Desiring to perform the act, he who had sought refuge,
ये तत्र लोके निवसन्ति सिद्धाः
Those perfected beings who dwell in that world,
जगाम दिव्यावरणानि भूयः
He again attained divine abodes.
गङ्गेत्युक्ता ब्रह्मणा व्योमसंस्था
She, established in the sky, was called Gaṅgā by Brahmā.
दृष्ट्वा देवास्तत्र तत्र स्तुवन्ति
Seeing him here and there, the gods praise him.
स्वचेतसा यं प्रणमन्ति देवाः
The gods bow down to him with their own minds.
