प्रपेदिरे महादेवं तमेव शरणं हरिम्
They sought refuge in Mahadeva, in Hari himself.
माहात्म्यं देवदेवस्य भैरवस्यामितौजसः
The greatness of Bhairava, the god of gods, of boundless energy.
विरोचनो नाम सुतो बभूव नृपतिः पुरा
Once, there was a king named Virocana, who was his son.
पालयामास धर्मेण त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्
He protected the three worlds, with all that moves and is still, through righteousness.
सनत्कुमारो भगवान् पुरं प्राप महामुनिः
The venerable Sanatkumara, the great sage, arrived at the city.
ननामोत्थाय शिरसा प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत्
Rising, bowing with his head, and with joined palms, he spoke these words.
योगीश्वरो ऽद्य भगवान् यतो ऽसौ ब्रह्मवित् स्वयम्
Today, the lord of yogis himself, who is a knower of Brahman, has come.
ब्रूहि मे ब्रह्मणः पुत्र किं कार्यं करवाण्यहम्
Tell me, O son of Brahma, what task should I perform?
द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो ऽहं वै भवन्तं भाग्यवानसि
I have come to see you; truly, you are fortunate.
त्रिलोके धार्मिको नूनं त्वादृशो ऽन्यो न विद्यते
In the three worlds, surely, there is no one righteous like you.
धर्माणां परमं धर्मं ब्रूहि मे ब्रह्मवित्तम
O best knower of Brahman, tell me the supreme dharma among all dharmas.
सर्वगुह्यतमं धर्ममात्मज्ञानमनुत्तमम्
The most secret dharma of all, the unsurpassed knowledge of the self.
निधाय पुत्रे तद्राज्यं योगाभ्यासरतो ऽभवत्
Entrusting the kingdom to his son, he became devoted to the practice of yoga.
ब्रह्मण्यो धार्मिको ऽत्यर्थं विजिग्ये ऽथ पुरन्दरम्
He was exceedingly devoted to Brahman and righteousness, and then he conquered Purandara.
जगाम निर्जितो विष्णुं देवं शरणमच्युतम्
Defeated, he went to Vishnu, the imperishable god, for refuge.
दैत्येन्द्राणां वधार्थाय पुत्रो मे स्यादिति स्वयम्
May my son be born for the destruction of the lords of the Daityas—so he himself thought.
प्रपन्ना विष्णुमव्यक्तं शरण्यं शरणं हरिम्
They sought refuge in Vishnu, the unmanifest, the protector, the shelter, Hari.
वासुदेवमनाद्यन्तमानन्दं व्योम केवलम्
Vasudeva, without beginning or end, blissful, pure space alone.
आविर्बभूव योगात्मा देवमातुः पुरो हरिः
Hari, the self of yoga, appeared before the goddess, his mother.
मेने कृतार्थमात्मानं तोषयामास केशवम्
She considered herself fulfilled and began to praise Keshava.
जयाशेषकल्पामलानन्दरूप
O embodiment of victory, pure as countless aeons, form of bliss—
नमो वासुदेवाय तुभ्यं नमस्ते
Salutations to you, Vasudeva; I bow to you.
नमस्ते वराहाय भूयो नमस्ते
Salutations to Varaha; again, salutations to you.
प्रभो विश्वयोने ऽथ भूयो नमस्ते
O Lord, source of the universe, again, salutations to you.
शिवायैकरूपाय भूयो नमस्ते
Salutations again to Shiva, the one whose form is singular.
तोषितश्छन्दयामास वरेण प्रहसन्निव
Pleased, he granted a boon, smiling as if in delight.
त्वामेव पुत्रं देवानां हिताय वरये वरम्
I choose you alone as the son, for the welfare of the gods, as my boon.
दत्त्वा वरानप्रमेयस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
Having granted the immeasurable boon, he vanished right there.
दधार गर्भं देवानां माता नारायणं स्वयम्
The mother of the gods herself bore Narayana as her embryo.
उत्पाता जज्ञिरे घोरा बलेर्वैरोचनेः पुरे
Terrible omens arose in the city of Bali, son of Virocana.
