कामवृत्त्या महायोगौ पापान्नस्त्रातुमर्हथः
By desire, the two great yogis, you ought to save from sinful food.
किमेतेषां भवेत् कार्यं प्राह पुण्यैषिणामिति
'What should be done for them?' he asked those who seek virtue.
गोपतिं प्राह विप्रेन्द्रानालोक्य प्रणतान् हरिः
Seeing the best of brahmins bowed, Hari spoke to the lord of cows.
संगच्छते महादेव धर्मो वेदाद् विनिर्बभौ
O great god, Dharma, born from the Veda, agrees.
अस्माभिः सर्व एवेमे गन्तारो नरकानपि
All these, along with us, will go even to hells.
विमोहनाय शास्त्राणि करिष्यामो वृषध्वज
O bearer of the bull, we will compose scriptures for delusion.
चकार मोहशास्त्राणि केशवो ऽपि शिवेरितः
At Shiva's command, Keshava also composed deluding scriptures.
पञ्चरात्रं पाशुपतं तथान्यानि सहस्त्रशः
The Pañcarātra, the Pāśupata, and thousands of others likewise.
पतन्तो निरये घोरे बहून् कल्पान् पुनः पुनः
Falling into the terrible hell, again and again, for many aeons.
वर्तध्वं मत्प्रसादेन नान्यथा निष्कृतिर्हि वः
Continue on by my grace; for there is no other deliverance for you.
आदेशं प्रत्यपद्यन्त शिरसासुरविद्विषोः
They accepted the command of the enemy of the Asuras, bowing their heads.
शिष्यानध्यापयामासुर्दर्शयित्वा फलानि तु
They began to instruct their disciples, having shown them the results.
चकार शङ्करो भिक्षां हितायैषां द्विजैः सह
Śaṅkara performed alms-seeking for their benefit, together with the twice-born.
विमोहयंल्लोकमिमं जटामण्डलमण्डितः
Adorned with matted locks, he bewildered this world.
नियोज्याङ्गभवं रुद्रं भैरवं दुष्टनिग्रहे
He appointed Rudra, born from his body, Bhairava, for restraining the wicked.
संस्थाप्य तत्र गणपान् देवानिन्द्रपुरोगमान्
There he established the Gaṇas, with the gods led by Indra.
स्त्रीरूपधारी नियतं सेवते स्म महेश्वरीम्
Assuming the form of a woman, he constantly served the great goddess.
सिषेविरे महादेवीं स्त्रीवेशं शोभनं गताः
They served the great goddess, having taken on a beautiful female appearance.
द्वारदेशे गणाध्यक्षो यथापूर्वमतिष्ठत
At the entrance, the chief of the Gaṇas stood as before.
आहर्तुकामो गिरिजामाजगामाथ मन्दरम्
Desiring to bring Pārvatī, he then came to Mandara.
न्यषेधयदमेयात्मा कालरूपधरो हरः
The unconquerable one, Hara, assuming the form of Time, restrained him.
शूलेनोरसि तं दैत्यमाजघान वृषध्वजः
The bull-bannered one struck that demon in the chest with his trident.
नन्दिषेणादयो दैत्यैरन्धकैरभिनिर्जिताः
Nandi and his army were overpowered by the demons called Andhakas.
विनायको मेघवाहः सोमनन्दी च वैद्युतः
Vināyaka, Meghavāha, and Somanandī, the lightning-born, too,
युयुधुः शूलशक्त्यृष्टिगिरिकूटपरश्वधैः
Fought with tridents, spears, javelins, mountain peaks, and axes.
दैत्येन्द्रेणातिबलिना क्षिप्तास्ते शतयोजनम्
By the exceedingly powerful lord of the demons, they were hurled a hundred yojanas away.
कालसूर्यप्रतीकाशा भैरवं त्वभिदुद्रुवुः
Brilliant as the sun of time, they rushed toward Bhairava.
युयोध भैरवो रुद्रः शूलमादाय भीषणम्
Bhairava Rudra fought, taking up his fearsome trident.
जगाम शरणं देवं वासुदेवमजं विभुम्
He went for refuge to the god Vāsudeva, the unborn, the all-pervading.
देवीपार्श्वस्थितो देवो विनाशायामरद्विषाम्
The god stood at the goddess’s side, for the destruction of the enemies of the immortals.
