न हानिमकरोदस्त्रं यथा देवस्य शूलिनः
But that weapon did not cause any harm to the Lord Śūlin.
मेने सर्वात्मकं देवं वासुदेवं सनातनम्
He regarded Vāsudeva, the eternal Lord, as the soul of all.
ननाम शिरसा देवं योगिनां हृदयेशयम्
He bowed his head to the Lord, who dwells in the hearts of yogis.
निवार्य पितरं भ्रातृन् हिरण्याक्षं तदाब्रवीत्
Restraining his father and brothers, he then spoke to Hiraṇyākṣa.
पुराणपुरुषो देवो महायोगी जगन्मयः
The ancient Person, the divine Lord, the great yogi, who is the very essence of the universe.
प्रधानपुरुषस्तत्त्वं मूलप्रकृतिरव्ययः
He is the Supreme Person of primordial matter, the fundamental nature, imperishable.
गच्छध्वमेनं शरणं विष्णुमव्यक्तमव्ययम्
Go to him for refuge—Viṣṇu, the unmanifest, the undecaying.
प्रोवाच पुत्रमत्यर्थं मोहितो विष्णुमायया
Deluded by Viṣṇu’s māyā, he spoke thus intensely to his son.
समागतो ऽस्मद्भवनमिदानीं कालचोदितः
Driven by time, he has now come to our abode.
मा निन्दस्वैनमीशानं भूतानामेकमव्ययम्
Do not revile this Lord, the one, imperishable ruler of beings.
कालेन हन्यते विष्णुः कालात्मा कालरूपधृक्
Viṣṇu, who is time itself and assumes the form of time, is destroyed by time.
निवारितो ऽपि पुत्रेण युयोध हरिमव्ययम्
Even though restrained by his son, he fought against the imperishable Hari.
नखैर्विदारयामास प्रह्रादस्यैव पश्यतः
He was torn apart by the nails, right before Prahlāda’s eyes.
विसृज्य पुत्रं प्रह्रादं दुद्रुवे भयविह्वलः
Abandoning his son Prahlāda, he fled, overwhelmed by fear.
नृसिंहदेहसंभूतैः सिंहैर्नोता यमालयम्
He did not reach the abode of Yama, being seized by lions born from the body of Narasiṃha.
स्वमेव परमं रूपं ययौ नारायणाह्वयम्
He assumed his own supreme form, called Nārāyaṇa.
अभिषेकेण युक्तेन हिरण्याक्षमयोजयत्
He installed Hiraṇyākṣa through a consecration ceremony.
लब्ध्वान्धकं महापुत्रं तपसाराध्य शङ्करम्
Having obtained Andhaka as a great son by worshipping Śaṅkara through austerity,
नीत्वा रसातलं चक्रे वन्दीमिन्दीवरप्रभाम्
He led her to Rasātala and made her a singer, radiant like a blue lotus.
गत्वा विज्ञापयामासुर्विष्णवे हरिमन्दिरम्
They went and made their petition at Viṣṇu’s abode.
सर्वेदेवमयं शुभ्रं वाराहं वपुरादधे
He assumed the spotless form of the Boar, composed of all the gods.
दंष्ट्रयोद्धारयामास कल्पादौ धरणीमिमाम्
With his tusk, he lifted up this earth at the beginning of the kalpa.
स्वामेव प्रकृतिं दिव्यां ययौ विष्णुः परं पदम्
Viṣṇu entered his own divine nature and attained the supreme abode.
अपालयत् स्वकंराज्यं भावं त्यक्त्वा तदाऽसुरम्
He governed his own kingdom, having abandoned the asuric disposition.
निः सपत्नं तदा राज्यं तस्यासीद् विष्णुवैभवात्
Then, due to Viṣṇu's glory, his kingdom became free from rivals.
तापसं नार्चयामास देवानां चैव मायया
He did not honor the ascetic, nor the gods, through illusion.
शशापासुरराजानं क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः
With eyes reddened by anger, he cursed the king of the asuras.
सा भक्तिर्वैष्णवी दिव्या विनाशं ते गमिष्यति
That divine Vaiṣṇava devotion will bring about your destruction.
मुमोह राज्यसंसक्तः सो ऽपि शापबलात् ततः
Attached to the kingdom, he became deluded by the power of the curse.
पितुर्वधमनुस्मृत्य क्रोधं चक्रे हरिं प्रति
Remembering his father's killing, he became angry at Hari.
