अनुग्राह्यो भगवता दक्षश्चापि दिवौकसः
Dakṣa and the dwellers of heaven were to be shown favor by the Blessed One.
उवाच प्रणतान् देवान् प्राचेतसमथो हरः
Hara spoke to the gods who had bowed and to Pracetasa (Dakṣa).
संपूज्यः सर्वयज्ञेषु न निन्द्यो ऽहं विशेषतः
I am to be honored in all sacrifices, and especially not to be reviled.
त्यक्त्वा लोकैषणामेतां मद्भक्तो भव यत्नतः
Abandoning this desire for worldly things, become my devotee with diligence.
तावत् तिष्ठ ममादेशात् स्वाधिकारेषु निर्वृतः
Remain, by my command, content in your own duties.
अदर्शनमनुप्राप्तो दक्षस्यामिततेजसः
He became invisible to Dakṣa, whose splendor is immeasurable.
व्याजहार स्वयं दक्षमशेषजगतो हितम्
He himself spoke to Dakṣa words for the welfare of all the worlds.
यदाचष्ट स्वयं देवः पालयैतदतन्द्रितः
When the god himself instructed, 'Protect this without negligence.'
पश्यन्त्येनं ब्रह्मभूता विद्वांसो वेदवादिनः
Those who are wise, versed in the Vedas, and have attained the state of Brahman, behold him.
स्तूयते वैदिकैर्मन्त्रैर्देवदेवो महेश्वरः
The great god, lord of gods, is praised with Vedic mantras.
चेतसा भावयुक्तेन स याति परमं पदम्
He who, with a mind endowed with devotion, contemplates him, attains the supreme state.
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा समाराधय यत्नतः
With action, mind, and speech, worship him diligently.
भवन्ति सर्वदोषाय निन्दकस्य क्रिया यतः
All actions of one who slanders become the cause of every fault.
स देवदेवो भगवान् महादेवो न संशयः
That blessed Lord, the great god, is truly the God of gods—there is no doubt.
मोहादवेदनिष्ठत्वात् ते यान्ति नरकं नराः
Because of delusion and adherence to false doctrines, such people go to hell.
एकीभावेन पश्यन्ति मुक्तिभाजो भवन्ति ते
Those who see with unity become fit for liberation.
इति मत्वा यजेद् देवं स याति परमां गतिम्
Thinking thus, one should worship the god; he attains the highest state.
इत्थं जगत् सर्वमिदं रुद्रनारायणोद्भवम्
Thus, this entire world arises from Rudra and Nārāyaṇa.
समाश्रयेन्महादेवं शरण्यं ब्रह्मवादिनाम्
One should take refuge in the great god, the protector, honored by those who know Brahman.
जगाम शरणं देवं गोपतिं कृत्तिवाससम्
He sought refuge in the god, the lord of herds, clad in skins.
द्विषन्तो मोहिता देवं संबभूवुः कलिष्वथ
Then, in the Kali age, those who hated the god became deluded.
पूर्वसंस्कारमहात्म्याद् ब्रह्मणो वचनादिह
Because of the greatness of previous impressions, and by the word of Brahmā here—
ब्रह्माणं जगतामीशमनुज्ञाताः स्वयंभुवा
Permitted by self-born Brahmā, the lord of the worlds—
भविष्यन्ति यथा पूर्वं शङ्करस्य प्रसादतः
They will become as before, by the grace of Śaṅkara.
शृणुध्वं दक्षपुत्रीणां सर्वासां चैव संततिम्
Hear now of all the lineages of Dakṣa’s daughters.
ससर्ज देवान् गन्धर्वान् ऋषींश्चैवासुरोरगान्
He created the gods, gandharvas, sages, asuras, and serpents.
तदा ससर्ज भूतानि मैथुनेनैव धर्मतः
Then, by lawful union, he created living beings.
सुतायां धर्मयुक्तायां पुत्राणां तु सहस्त्रकम्
From his virtuous daughter, a thousand sons were born.
षष्टिं दक्षो ऽसृजत् कन्या वैरण्यां वै प्रजापतिः
Dakṣa, the lord of creatures, begot sixty daughters on Vairiṇī.
विंशत् सप्त च सोमाय चतस्त्रो ऽरिष्टनेमिने
Twenty-seven to Soma, and four to Ariṣṭanemi.
