ये नाध्वरस्य राजानं पूजयध्वं महेश्वरम्
'Honor Maheśvara, the Lord of Sacrifice, as the king of the ritual.'
पूज्यते सर्वयज्ञेषु सर्वाभ्युदसिद्धिदः
'He is to be worshipped in all sacrifices, the bestower of all desired success.'
न मेनिरे ययुर्मन्त्रा देवान् मुक्त्वा स्वमालयम्
They did not consider him; the mantras departed, leaving the gods, and returned to their own abode.
स्पृशन् कराभ्यां ब्रह्मर्षि दधीचं प्राह देवताः
Touching Dadhīca, the brahmarṣi, with their hands, the deities spoke to him.
यस्मात् प्रसह्य तस्माद् वो नाशयाम्यद्य गर्वितम्
'Because you have acted arrogantly, today I will destroy your pride.'
गणेश्वराश्च संक्रुद्धा यूपानुत्पाट्य चिक्षिपुः
The enraged leaders of the gaṇas uprooted the sacrificial posts and hurled them away.
गृहीत्वा भीषणाः सर्वे गङ्गास्त्रोतसि चिक्षिपुः
All the fierce ones seized them and cast them into the stream of the Ganges.
व्यष्टम्भयददीनात्मा तथान्येषां दिवौकसाम्
He, possessing immense strength, restrained the other gods in the same way.
निहत्य मुष्टिना दन्तान् पूष्णश्चैवमपातयत्
He struck out Pūṣan's teeth with his fist and made them fall.
धर्षयामास बलवान् स्मयमानो गणेश्वरः
The powerful lord of the gaṇas, smiling, began to harass them.
जघान मूर्ध्नि पादेन मुनीनपि मुनीश्वराः
The lords of sages struck even the sages on the head with their feet.
विव्याध निशेतैर्बाणैः स्तम्भयित्वा सुदर्शनम्
He pierced Sudarśana with sharp arrows, having first immobilized him.
जघान पक्षैः सहसा ननादाम्बुनिधिर्यथा
He struck suddenly with his wings, roaring like the ocean.
वैनतेयादभ्यधिकान् गरुडं ते प्रदुद्रुवुः
Those who surpassed Garuḍa in strength fled from Vainateya.
विसृज्य माधवं वेगात् तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Releasing Mādhava with great force, it appeared as something wondrous.
आगत्य वारयामास वीरभद्रं च केशवम्
Coming forth, he restrained Vīrabhadra and Keśava.
संस्तूय भगवानीशः साम्बस्तत्रागमत् स्वयम्
Having been praised, the blessed Lord Īśa, along with Sāmba, arrived there himself.
तुष्टाव भगवान् ब्रह्मा दक्षः सर्वे दिवौकसः
The blessed Brahmā, Dakṣa, and all the dwellers of heaven offered praise.
स्तोत्रैर्नानाविधैर्दक्षः प्रणम्य च कृताञ्जलिः
Dakṣa, with joined palms, bowed and praised him with various kinds of hymns.
प्रसन्नमानसा रुद्रं वचः प्राह घृणानिधिः
With a mind made serene, the ocean of compassion spoke to Rudra.
अनुग्राह्यो भगवता दक्षश्चापि दिवौकसः
Dakṣa and the dwellers of heaven were to be shown favor by the Blessed One.
उवाच प्रणतान् देवान् प्राचेतसमथो हरः
Hara spoke to the gods who had bowed and to Pracetasa (Dakṣa).
संपूज्यः सर्वयज्ञेषु न निन्द्यो ऽहं विशेषतः
I am to be honored in all sacrifices, and especially not to be reviled.
त्यक्त्वा लोकैषणामेतां मद्भक्तो भव यत्नतः
Abandoning this desire for worldly things, become my devotee with diligence.
तावत् तिष्ठ ममादेशात् स्वाधिकारेषु निर्वृतः
Remain, by my command, content in your own duties.
अदर्शनमनुप्राप्तो दक्षस्यामिततेजसः
He became invisible to Dakṣa, whose splendor is immeasurable.
व्याजहार स्वयं दक्षमशेषजगतो हितम्
He himself spoke to Dakṣa words for the welfare of all the worlds.
यदाचष्ट स्वयं देवः पालयैतदतन्द्रितः
When the god himself instructed, 'Protect this without negligence.'
पश्यन्त्येनं ब्रह्मभूता विद्वांसो वेदवादिनः
Those who are wise, versed in the Vedas, and have attained the state of Brahman, behold him.
स्तूयते वैदिकैर्मन्त्रैर्देवदेवो महेश्वरः
The great god, lord of gods, is praised with Vedic mantras.
