Therefore, it is only one who is endowed with the true qualities of the self who is fit to uphold my vow. Many have been purified through this yoga, and by following its path, they have attained to my own state. Thus, one should worship me, the supreme Lord, through the yoga of knowledge, approaching me with a mind joined to understanding and a heart that is pure. In this way, one should always worship me, for such a person attains union with me; this is the secret I have now declared. The devotee who is free from possessiveness and ego is dear to me. Likewise, one whose mind and intellect are wholly dedicated to me is also dear to me. That one who is untouched by joy, anger, fear, or agitation is indeed especially dear to me. He who renounces all personal undertakings and remains devoted is beloved to me as well. My devotee, who is homeless and steadfast in mind, surely reaches me, and by my grace, attains the eternal and supreme state. Therefore, becoming free from hope and possessiveness, one should take refuge in me alone. Even while engaged in action, such a devotee is not bound by it. But if one performs only bodily actions, without true devotion, that state is not reached. Yet, by performing actions solely for my sake and out of longing for my grace, one destroys the bondage of the world. Knowing me as the Supreme Lord, the yogi attains me; those who constantly speak of me also come to union with me. I dispel all darkness with the radiant lamp of knowledge. For those who are ever devoted, I bear the burden of their welfare and spiritual progress. The results attained by those who seek rewards, even if accompanied by the deities, are to be understood as having an end. But those who are endowed with devotion to me are liberated by that very devotion. Whoever takes refuge in me alone, as the Lord, attains the supreme state. One should worship the Supreme Lord in the liṅga, with detachment, until the end of life. To such a person, I grant supreme lordship in a single birth. This is knowledge in essence, all-pervading, and established in the hearts of yogis. Wherever the liṅga of the Great Lord is worshipped, in any place, it is auspicious. Whether the liṅga is conceived in a jewel or another substance, one should worship the liṅga of the Supreme Lord. Therefore, worship the eternal Lord in the liṅga, wherever it may be found. For the ignorant, the liṅga appears in wood and similar materials, but for yogis, it is realized in the heart. Engaged in practice, one should recite the praṇava—the sacred syllable, the very form of Brahman—for as long as life lasts. Alone, with mind and self controlled, such a person attains the supreme state, and by the Lord’s grace, reaches that highest goal. He grants the supreme knowledge by which one is freed from all bondage. Having attained this knowledge in this very life, one reaches the most auspicious state. By the grace of the Lord, all cross over worldly existence, O twice-born. Therefore, O twice-born, one should always adhere to dharma for the sake of liberation. This teaching should be given only to the righteous, to the devoted, and to the celibate. Then he spoke to Nārāyaṇa, the flawless one, who was seated there. “This auspicious teaching should be given by you to disciples of peaceful mind, for the benefit of all devoted twice-born, O best among the twice-born.
