Those who are born in this world surely die—there is no doubt; hunger, thirst, fierce suffering, and fainting arising from heat also occur.
Where these fierce pains arise, they are like the sting of a scorpion; at the appointed time, destruction comes to all embodied beings.

These five are indeed determined for the embodied being while still in the womb; a creature is born by karma and is dissolved by karma alone.
Happiness, suffering, fear, and safety are all experienced through karma; with head downward and feet upward, the wind draws the being from the womb.

By what sins, O god, or by what meritorious deeds, do humans go there? Please tell me this in detail.

On that path, there is no food or drink by which life might be sustained; no water is seen there by which thirst might be quenched.

Whatever gifts have been given on earth by men, those very gifts attend them on the path before Yama in the other world.
For sinners, there do not appear the offerings of water and funeral rites; those petty evil-doers wander as spirits driven by the wind.
Such is that terrible road, O virtuous one, as described to you; now I will again tell you of the condition of Yama's path.
Between the regions of Yama and Nirṛti lies the city of Vaivasvata; it is entirely made of diamond, divine, and unbreakable by gods or demons.
