इत्युक्तो गरुडो रुद्र ! कश्यपायाह पृच्छते 2.
Thus addressed, Garuda spoke to Kashyapa, O Rudra, as he inquired.
स्वयं चान्यमना भूत्वा विद्ययान्यान्य जीवयत् गरुडोक्तं गारुडं हि श्रृणु रुद्र ! मदात्मकम् ।। 2.
And, becoming absorbed in another thought, he revived another with knowledge; hear, O Rudra, the Garuda teaching spoken by Garuda himself, which is of my own essence.
इति रुद्राब्जजौ विष्णोः शुश्राव ब्रह्मणो मुनिः 3.
Thus, the sage heard from Brahma about the lotus-born Rudra and Vishnu.
मुनीनां श्रृण्वतां मध्ये सर्गाद्यं देवपूजनम् 3.
Among the sages listening, the worship of the gods at the beginning of creation was described.
वर्णाश्रमादिधर्माश्च दानराज्यादिधर्मकाः 3.
The duties of varna and ashrama, as well as those concerning charity and kingship, were explained.
अंगानि प्रलयो धर्मकामार्थज्ञानमुत्तमम् 3.
The limbs, dissolution, and the supreme knowledge of dharma, desire, and wealth were set forth.
पुराणे गारुडे सर्वं गरुडो भगवानथ 3.
In the Garuda Purana, all this was declared by the blessed Garuda.
भुत्वा हरेर्वाहनं च सर्गादीनां च कारणम् 3.
Having become the vehicle of Hari and the cause of creation and its sequences,
चक्रे क्षुधा हृतं यस्य ब्रह्माण्डमुदरे हरेः 3.
He, whose hunger seized the cosmic egg within the belly of Hari, performed these acts.
कश्यपो गारुडाद्वृक्षं दग्धं चाजीवयद्यतः 3.
Kashyapa revived a tree burned by Garuda, through the power of Garuda's teaching.
तच्छ्रीमद्रारुडं पुण्यं सर्वदं पठतस्तव 3.
That blessed and auspicious Garuda teaching, which grants everything, is to be recited by you.
सर्गश्च प्रतिसर्गश्च वंशो मन्वन्तराणि च 4.
Creation, dissolution, genealogies, and the ages of Manu are described.
श्रृणु रुद्र प्रवक्ष्यामि सर्गादीन्पापनाशनान् 4.
Hear, O Rudra, I shall declare the creation and other subjects that destroy sin.
नरनारायणो देवो वासुदेवो निरंजनः 4.
The divine Nara-Narayana, Vasudeva, and the stainless one are spoken of.
तदेतत्सर्वमेवैतव्द्यक्ताव्यक्तस्वरूपवत् । तथा पुरुषरूपेण कालरूपेण च स्थितम् ।। 4.
All this exists in both manifest and unmanifest forms, as well as in the form of the person and in the form of time.
व्यक्तं विष्णुस्तथाऽव्यक्तं पुरुषः काल एव च 4.
The manifest is Vishnu, the unmanifest is the person, and time as well.
अनादिनिधनो धाता त्वनन्तः पुरुषोत्तमः 4.
The creator is without beginning or end, infinite, and the supreme person.
तस्माहुद्धिर्मनस्तस्मात्ततः खं पवनस्ततः 4.
From him comes intellect; from intellect, mind; then space; then wind.
अण्डो हिरण्मयो रुद्र । तस्यान्तः स्वयमेव हि 4.
The golden egg is Rudra; within it, he himself abides.
ब्रह्मा चतुर्मुखो भूत्वा रजोमात्राधिकः सदा 4.
Brahma, having four faces, always possesses predominance of rajas.
अण्डस्यान्तर्जगत्सर्वं सदेवासुरमानुषम् 4.
Within the egg is the entire world, with gods, demons, and humans.
अपसंह्रियते चान्ते संहर्त्ता च स्वयं हरि 4.
At the end, all is withdrawn, and Hari himself is the destroyer.
रुद्ररूपी च कल्पान्ते जगत्संहरतेऽखिलम् 4.
At the end of the cycle, taking the form of Rudra, he destroys the entire world.
दंष्टूयोद्धरति ज्ञात्वा वारहीमास्थितस्तनूम् 4.
Assuming the form of a boar, he lifts it with his tusks, knowing this.
प्रथमो महतः सर्गो विरूपो ब्रह्मणस्तु सः 4.
The first creation of the great is the deformed one, belonging to Brahma.
वैकारिकस्तृतीयस्तु सर्गस्त्वैन्द्रियकः स्मृतः 4.
The third creation is called vaikārika, and the creation of the senses.
मुख्यसर्गश्चतुर्थस्तु मुख्या वै स्थावराः स्मृताः 4.
The fourth creation is the principal one; the principal immovable beings are remembered.
तदूर्द्धस्त्रोतसां षष्ठो देवसर्गस्तु स स्मृतः 4.
The sixth creation, above the upward-flowing ones, is remembered as the creation of the gods.
अष्टमोऽनुग्रहः सर्गः सात्त्विकस्तामसस्तु सः 4.
The eighth creation is favor, sattvic and also tamasic.
प्राकृतो वैकृतश्चापि कौमारो नवमः स्मृतः 4.
The prākṛta and vaikṛta creations, and the kaumāra, are remembered as the ninth.
