Garuda Purana

मूलमन्त्रं जपेद्वापि यः स याति नरो हरिम् 31.

Or, whoever recites the root-mantra, that person attains Hari.

रहस्यं परमं गुह्यं भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं परम् श्रृणुयाच्छ्रावयेद्वापि विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति ।। 31.

This is the supreme, most secret mystery, bestowing both enjoyment and liberation; whoever hears or has it recited will go to Viṣṇu's world.

पञ्चतत्त्वार्चनं ब्रूहि शंखचक्रगदाधर ! 32.

Tell me about the worship of the five principles, O bearer of conch, discus, and mace!

पञ्चतत्त्वार्चनं वक्ष्ये तव शङ्कर सुव्रत 32.

O Śaṅkara, steadfast in vows, I will explain to you the worship of the five principles.

तच्छृणुष्व महादेव पवित्रं कलिनाशनम् 32.

Listen to this, O Mahādeva, it is pure and destroys the effects of the Kali age.

वासुदेवो ध्रुवः शुद्धः सर्वव्यापी निरञ्जनः 32.

Vāsudeva is eternal, pure, all-pervading, and stainless.

लोकानुग्रहकृद्विष्णुः सर्वदुष्टविनाशनः 32.

Viṣṇu, who grants grace to the worlds, is the destroyer of all evil.

तथा प्रद्युम्नरूपेणानिरुद्धाख्येन च स्थितः 32.

Likewise, he abides in the form of Pradyumna, known as Aniruddha.

एतेषां वाचकान्मंत्रानेताञ्छृणु वृषध्वज ! ॐ आं संकर्षणाय नमः ॐ अनिरुद्धाय नमः 32.

Hear the mantras that designate these, O bearer of the bull! Om, āṃ, salutations to Saṃkarṣaṇa; Om, salutations to Aniruddha.

पञ्च मंत्राः समाख्याता देवानां वाचकास्तव 32.

Five mantras have been declared, which are the designations of the gods for you.

अधुना संप्रवक्ष्यामि पञ्चतत्त्वार्चनं शुभम् 32.

Now I shall explain the auspicious worship of the five principles.

आदौ स्नानं प्रकुर्वीत स्नात्वा सन्ध्यां समाचरेत् 32.

First, one should bathe; after bathing, perform the twilight ritual.

आचम्योपविशेत्प्राज्ञो बद्धासनमभीप्सितम् 32.

Having sipped water, the wise person should sit, adopting the desired posture.

सामान्यं कठिनीकृत्य चाण्डमुत्पादयेत्ततः 32.

Making the seat firm and general, then one should produce the ritual vessel.

वासुदेवं जगन्नाथं पीतकौशेयवाससम् 32.

Vāsudeva, Lord of the universe, clad in yellow silk garments.

आत्मनो हृदि पद्मे तु ध्यायेत्तु परमेश्वरम् 32.

One should meditate upon the Supreme Lord in the lotus of one's own heart.

प्रद्युम्नमनिरुद्धं च श्रीमन्नारायणं ततः 32.

Then, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, and the glorious Nārāyaṇa.

चिन्तयेच्च ततो न्यासं कुर्य्या द्वै कारयोर्द्वयोः 32.

Afterwards, one should contemplate and then perform the ritual placement for both hands.

अङ्गमन्त्रैर्महादेव ! तान्मंत्राञ्श्रृणु सुव्रत ! ॐ ईं शिरसे नमः ॐ ऐं कवचाय नमः ॐ अः अस्त्राय फट् ।। 32.

With the mantras for the limbs, O Mahādeva, hear these mantras, O virtuous one! Om īṃ, salutations to the head; Om aiṃ, salutations to the armor; Om aḥ, salutations to the weapon, phaṭ.

ॐ समस्तपरिवारायाच्युताय नमः ॐ विधात्रे नमः ॐ कूर्माय नमः ॐ पृथिव्यैनमः ॐ धर्माय नमः ॐ वैराग्याय नमः ॐ अज्ञानाय नमः ॐ अं अर्कमण्डलाय नमः ॐ वं वह्निमण्डलाय नमः ॐ पाञ्चजन्याय नमः ॐ गदायै नमः ॐ श्रियै नमः ॐ पुष्ट्यै नमः ॐ शक्त्यै नमः ॐ इन्द्राय नमः ॐ यमाय नमः ॐ वरुणाय नमः ॐ सोमाय नमः ॐ अनन्ताय नमः ॐ विष्वक्‌सेनाय नमः ।। 32.

Om, salutations to Acyuta, with all his retinue; Om, salutations to the Creator; Om, salutations to the Tortoise; Om, salutations to the Earth; Om, salutations to Dharma; Om, salutations to Detachment; Om, salutations to Ignorance; Om, aṃ, salutations to the solar orb; Om, vaṃ, salutations to the fire orb; Om, salutations to Pāñcajanya; Om, salutations to the mace; Om, salutations to fortune; Om, salutations to nourishment; Om, salutations to power; Om, salutations to Indra; Om, salutations to Yama; Om, salutations to Varuṇa; Om, salutations to Soma; Om, salutations to Ananta; Om, salutations to Viṣvaksena.

एते मन्त्राः समाख्यातास्तव रुद्र समासतः 32.

These mantras have been declared to you, O Rudra, in summary.

ॐ पद्माय नमः आत्मानं वासुदेवं च ध्यात्वा चैव परेश्वरम् ।। 32.

Om, salutations to Padma; having meditated upon oneself as Vāsudeva and also the Supreme Lord.

आसनं पूजयेत्पश्चादावाह्य विधिवन्नरः 32.

Afterwards, one should worship the seat, having invoked it according to the proper method.

गरुडं पूजयेदग्रे वासुदेवस्य शङ्कर 32.

One should first worship Garuḍa, O Śaṅkara, for Vāsudeva.

धर्मं ज्ञानं च वैराग्यमैश्वर्यं पूर्वदेशतः 32.

Dharma, knowledge, detachment, and sovereignty are to be placed in the eastern direction.

मण्डलत्रयमध्ये तु कीर्त्तिता ह्यसनस्थितिः 32.

In the center of the three circles, the seat is described as being established.

कर्णिकायां वासुदेवं पूजयेत्परमेश्वरम् 32.

In the pericarp, one should worship Vāsudeva, the Supreme Lord.

शक्तयश्चैव पूर्वादौ देवदेवस्य शङ्कर 32.

And, O Śaṅkara, the energies of the Lord of gods are to be worshipped, beginning from the east.

अधो नाग तदूर्द्ध्वन्तु ब्रह्माणं पूजयेत्सुधीः 32.

Below, one should worship the serpent, and above, the wise should worship Brahmā.
