द्रवीभूतैः शिरोगात्रैः स्नायुमांसत्वगास्थिभिः । ततो याम्यैर्नरैराशु दर्व्याघट्टनघट्टिताः ॥ २,३.
With their heads and bodies liquefied, along with sinews, flesh, skin, and bones, they are then struck swiftly by Yama's men with ladles, causing repeated agitation.
कृतावर्ते महातैले क्वाथ्यन्ते पापकर्मिणः । एष ते विस्तरेणोक्तस्तप्तकुम्भो मया खग ॥ २,३.
The evil-doers are boiled in a great cauldron of oil, turned over and over; this, O Bird, is the heated vessel, described to you in detail.
आदिमो रौरवः प्रोक्तो महारौरवकोऽपरः । अतिशीतस्तृतीयस्तु चतुर्थो हि निकृन्तनः ॥ २,३.
The first is called Raurava, the second is Mahāraurava, the third is Atiśīta, and the fourth is Nikṛntana.
अप्रतिष्ठः पञ्चमः स्यादसिपत्रवनोऽपरः । सप्तमस्तप्तकुम्भस्तु सप्तैते नरका मताः ॥ २,३.
The fifth is Apratiṣṭha, the sixth is Asipatravana, and the seventh is Taptakumbha; these seven are considered the hells.
श्रूयन्तेन्यान्यपि तथा नरकाणि नराधमाः । कर्मणां तारतम्येन तेषुतेषु पतन्ति हि ॥ २,३.
Other hells are also heard of, O lowest of men; according to the gradation of their deeds, they fall into these various hells.
तथा हि नरको रोधः शूकरस्ताल एव च । तप्तकुम्भो महाज्वालः शबलोऽथ विमोहनः ॥ २,३.
Thus, the hells are Rodha, Śūkara, Tāla, Taptakumbha, Mahājvāla, Śabala, and Vimohana.
क्रिमिश्च क्रिमभक्षश्च लालाभक्षो विषञ्जनः । अधः शिराः पूयवहो रुधिरान्धश्च विड्रभुजः ॥ २,३.
Also, there are Krimi, Krimibhakṣa, Lālābhakṣa, Viṣañjana, Adhaḥśirā, Pūyavaha, Rudhirāndha, and Viḍrabhuja.
तथा वैतरणी सू (मू) मसिपत्रवनं तथा । अग्निज्वालो महाघोरः सन्दंशो वाप्यभोजनः ॥ २,३.
Likewise, there are Vaitaraṇī, Sūmū (or Mūmasipatravana), Agnijvāla, Mahāghora, Sandaṃśa, and Vāpyabhojana.
तमश्च कालसूत्रं च लोहश्चाप्यभिदस्तथा । अप्रतिष्ठोऽप्यवीचिश्च नरका एवमादयः ॥ २,३.
There are also Tamaḥ, Kālasūtra, Loha, Abhida, Apratiṣṭha, and Avīci; these are the principal hells.
तामसा नरकाः सर्वे यमस्य विषये स्थिताः । येषु दुष्कृतकर्माणः पतन्ति हि पृथक्पृथक् ॥ २,३.
All these hells, filled with darkness, are situated in Yama's domain, into which those who commit evil deeds fall, each according to their actions.
भूमेरधस्तात्ते सर्वे रौरवाद्याः प्रकीर्तिताः । रोघो गोघ्नो भ्रूणहा च अग्निदाता नरः पतेत् ॥ २,३.
All these, beginning with Raurava, are said to be beneath the earth; one who kills a cow, a disease-bringer, a slayer of a fetus, or one who gives fire wrongly, falls into hell.
सूकरे ब्रह्महा मज्जेत्सुरापः स्वर्णतस्करः । ताले पतेत्क्षत्त्रहन्ता हत्वा वैश्यं च दुर्गतिः ॥ २,३.
A Brahmin-killer sinks in Śūkara; a drinker of liquor, a gold thief, and a slayer of a kṣatriya fall into Tāla; one who kills a vaiśya meets a miserable fate.
ब्रह्महत्यां च यः कुर्याद्यश्च स्याद्गुरुतल्पगः । स्वसृगामी तप्तकुम्भी तथा राजभटोऽनृती ॥ २,३.
Whoever commits Brahmin-murder, or violates the teacher's wife, or approaches his own sister, goes to Taptakumbha, as does a royal officer who lies.
तप्तलोहैश्च विक्रेता तथा बन्धनरक्षिता । माध्वी विक्रयकर्तां च यस्तु भक्तं परित्यजेत् ॥ २,३.
A seller of heated iron, a prison guard, one who sells honey, and one who abandons a devotee—all these fall into hell.
महाज्वाली दुहितरं स्नुषां गच्छति यस्तु वै । वेदो विक्रीयते यैश्च वेदं दूषयते तु यः ॥ २,३.
He who approaches his daughter or daughter-in-law, or sells the Veda, or corrupts the Veda, falls into Mahājvāla.
गुरुं चैवावमन्यन्ते वाक्शरैस्ताडयन्ति च । अगम्यागामी च नरो नरकं शबलं व्रजेत् ॥ २,३.
Those who disrespect their teacher, strike him with words or letters, or approach forbidden women, go to the hell called Śabala.
विमोहे पतते शूरे मर्यादां यो भिनत्ति वै । दुरिष्टं कुरुते यस्तु कृमिभक्षं प्रपद्यते ॥ २,३.
He who falls into Vimohana is a warrior who breaks boundaries, one who does wicked deeds, or one who eats what is forbidden, and thus enters Krimibhakṣa.
देवब्राह्मणविद्वेष्टा लालाभक्षे पतत्यपि । कुण्डकर्ता कुलालश्च न्यासहर्ता चिकित्सकः ॥ २,३.
One who hates gods or Brahmins falls into Lālābhakṣa; a maker of pits, a potter, one who misappropriates deposits, or a physician—
आरामेष्वग्निदाता च एते यान्ति विषञ्जने । असत्प्रतिग्रही यस्तु तथैवायाज्ययाजकः ॥ २,३.
Those who give fire in gardens, those who administer poison, those who accept improper gifts, and those who perform sacrifices with forbidden offerings—these all go to the realm of poison.
न क्षत्त्रैर्जोवते यस्तु नरो गच्छेदधोमुखम् । क्षीरं सुरां च मासं लाक्षां गन्धं रसं तिलान् ॥ २,३.
A man who trades with warriors, or who sells milk, liquor, meat, lac, perfumes, juices, or sesame seeds, will go with his face downward.
एवमादीनि विक्रीणन् घोरे पूयवहे पतेत् । यः कुक्कुटान्निबध्नाति मार्जारान् सूकरांश्च तान् । पक्षिणश्च मृगांश्छा गान्सोऽप्येवं नरकं व्रजेत् ॥ २,३.
Whoever sells such things as these, and other dreadful, pus-bearing items, falls into a terrible place. Whoever ties up chickens, cats, pigs, birds, or deer, or sells cows, also goes to hell.
आजाविको माहिषिकस्तथा चक्री ध्वजी च यः । रङ्गोपजीविको विप्रः शाकुनिर्ग्रामयाजकः ॥ २,३.
A shepherd, buffalo-keeper, charioteer, standard-bearer, one who lives by the arena, a Brahmin who is a gambler, or a village priest—
अगारदाही गरदः कुण्डाशी सोमविक्रयी । सुरापो मांसभक्षी च तथा च पशुघातकः ॥ २,३.
One who burns houses, a poisoner, one who eats from a pit, a seller of Soma, a drinker of liquor, an eater of meat, and a killer of animals—
रुधिरान्धे पतन्त्येते पतन्त्येते एवमाहुर्मनीषिणः । उपविष्टन्त्वेकपङ्क्त्यां विषं सम्भोजयन्ति ये ॥ २,३.
These fall into blood-filled hells—so say the wise. Those who make others eat poison while sitting together in a single row also fall there.
पतन्ति निरये घोरे विड्भुजे नात्र संशयः । मधुग्राहो वैतरणीमाक्रोशी मूत्रसंज्ञके ॥ २,३.
They fall into the dreadful hell of the eater of excrement—there is no doubt of this. The honey-thief, the one who insults others, and the one who drinks urine cross the Vaitarani river.
असिपत्रवनेऽसौची क्रोधनश्च एतेदपि । अग्निज्वालां मृगव्याधो भोज्यते यत्र वायसैः ॥ २,३.
In the Asipatravana hell, the impure and the angry also go; there, the hunter is devoured by crows in the blazing fire.
इज्यायां व्रतलोपाच्च सन्दंशे नरके पतेत् । स्कन्दन्ते यदि वा स्वप्ने यतिनो ब्रह्मचारिणः ॥ २,३.
For neglect of sacrifice or breaking a vow, one falls into the hell of pincers. If ascetics or celibates fall, even in a dream, they too go there.
पुत्रैरध्यापिता ये च पुत्रैराज्ञापिताश्च ये । ते सर्वे नरकं यान्ति निरयं चाप्यभोजनम् ॥ २,३.
Those who are taught by their sons, or who are commanded by their sons, all go to hell and to the realm of deprivation.
वर्णाश्रमविरुद्धानि क्रोधहर्षसमन्विताः । कर्माणि ये तु कुर्वन्ति सर्वे निरयवासिनः ॥ २,३.
Those who perform acts contrary to their class and stage of life, driven by anger or joy, all dwell in hell.
उपरिष्टात्स्थितो घोर उष्णात्मा रौरवो महान् । सुदारुणः सुशीतात्मा तस्या धस्तामसः स्मृतः ॥ २,३.
Above stands the dreadful, hot, great Raurava hell; below it is remembered the most terrible, extremely cold hell of darkness.
