न खाद्यौ तौ त्वयानीचौ चतुर्भुजौ च पक्षिप? । परस्परकृताच्छापदोषाच्च परिमोचितौ ॥ १,२४०.
Those two, not to be eaten by you, were humble and four-armed, O bird; and, freed from the fault of the mutual curse, were released.
निषाददेशस्वादेन देवं ब्रूस्मानिदितम्? । विषादीशस्ततो मुक्तस्तत्रापि ब्राह्मणस्त्वया ॥ १,२४०.
By tasting the land of the Nishadas, I speak to the god as instructed; the lord of poison was then released, and there too, a Brahmin was freed by you.
वटारोहिणवृक्षस्य योजनानां शतायुता । शाखा भिन्ना त्वया यत्र वालखिल्याः समास्थिताः ॥ १,२४०.
On the banyan tree, whose roots stretch for a hundred thousand yojanas, the branch broken by you was where the Valakhilyas were settled.
त्वया यत्नकृता कृत्वानखस्थौ गजकच्छपौ । नभस्पपिनिरालंबे सर्वतः परिवारितौ ॥ १,२४०.
By your effort, you placed the elephant and tortoise upon your nails, suspending them in the sky, surrounded on all sides.
त्वया जिता रणे देवाः सर्वे शक्रपुरोगमाः । आहृतं तत्पुरा सोमं वाह्निं निर्वाप्य काश्यपे ॥ १,२४०.
You conquered all the gods in battle, led by Indra; you brought the soma then, extinguishing the fire for Kashyapa.
नागौ दृष्टिविषौ कृत्वा रजसा तु विचक्षुषौ । तीक्ष्णाग्रेण न सा भङ्क्त्वाविक्रवेतौ मनोहतः? ॥ १,२४०.
Making the serpents blind by your gaze and dust, with sharp-pointed beak, you did not break them, but subdued them by your resolve.
आहृत्यापि त्वया सोमं नीतमेव न भक्तितः । तेन विष्णोर्ध्वजस्थानं वाहनत्वं गतो ह्यसि ॥ १,२४०.
Even after bringing the soma, you did not take it for yourself; thus, you became the vehicle established above Vishnu.
त्वया निः क्षिप्य दर्भेषु सोमं नागाश्च वञ्चिताः । जहार चामृतं पात्रं शीघ्रं वै ब्रह्मसूदन ॥ १,२४०.
By casting the soma among the blades of grass, you deceived the serpents; you swiftly seized the vessel of nectar, O slayer of Brahmins.
यत्र जिह्वाद्विधाभूताः पन्नगानां द्विजोत्तम । विनता मोचिता दास्यात्कद्वा पूर्वजिता रणे ॥ १,२४०.
Where the tongues of serpents were divided, O best of twice-born, Vinata was freed from servitude, having been previously defeated in battle.
उच्चैः श्रवाः स किंवर्णः शुक्ल इत्येव भाषते । कृष्णवर्णमहं मन्ये पूर्वदृष्टमुवाच ह ॥ १,२४०.
Uccaiḥśravas is said to be white in color; I consider him black, as was seen before and spoken.
त्वया वज्रपहारेण पक्षमुक्तं पुरा स्वतः? । दधीचवज्रशक्राणां मातुरर्थाय नान्यथा ॥ १,२४०.
By the blow of the thunderbolt, your wing was released long ago; Dadhichi's thunderbolt was for the sake of your mother, not otherwise.
तस्य पक्षस्य देवेन्द्रो यदानीतं हि दृष्टवान् । तदा तव सुपर्णोति नाम स्थानं जगत्त्रये ॥ १,२४०.
When Indra saw that wing brought, then your name, Suparna, became established in the three worlds.
ध्यानमात्राद्विनश्येत्तु विषं स्थावरजङ्गमम् । पठेद्वा शृणुयाद्यश्च भुक्तिं मुक्तिमवाप्नुयात् ॥ १,२४०.
By mere meditation, poison—whether stationary or moving—perishes; whoever recites or hears this attains enjoyment and liberation.
सूत उवाच । वसुराजो गारुडं वै श्रुत्वा सर्वमवाप्तवान् । गरुडो भगवान्विष्णुध्यांयन्सर्ववाप्तवान् ॥ १,२४०.
Suta said: Having heard the entire Garuda narrative, King Vasu attained everything; Garuda, the blessed one, meditating on Vishnu, attained all things.
तदुक्तं गारुडं पुण्यं पुराणं यः पठेन्नरः । सर्वकाममवाप्याथ प्राप्नोति परमां गतिम् ॥ १,२४०.
Whoever reads this sacred and meritorious Garuḍa Purāṇa, as spoken here, attains all desires and then reaches the highest state.
श्लोकपादं पठित्वा च सर्वपापक्षयो भवेत् । यस्येदं वर्तते गेह तस्य सर्वं भवेदिह ॥ १,२४०.
By reciting even a single verse or line, all sins are destroyed; for the one in whose house this exists, all good comes here.
गारुडं यस्य हस्ते तु तस्य हस्तगतो नयः । यः पठेच्छृणुयादेतद्भुक्तिं मुक्तिं समाप्नुयात् ॥ १,२४०.
For the one who holds the Garuḍa Purāṇa in hand, righteousness is in his grasp; whoever recites or hears this attains both enjoyment and liberation.
धर्मार्थकाममोक्षांश्च प्राप्नुयाच्छ्रवणादितः । पुत्रार्थो लभते पुत्रान् कामार्थो काममाप्नुयात् ॥ १,२४०.
By hearing this, one attains righteousness, wealth, desire, and liberation; one seeking sons obtains sons, one seeking desires obtains desires.
विद्यार्थो लभते विद्यां जयार्थो लभते जयम् । ब्रह्महत्यादिना पापी पापशुद्धिमवाप्नुयात् ॥ १,२४०.
One seeking knowledge gains knowledge, one seeking victory gains victory; even a sinner guilty of killing a brāhmaṇa becomes purified from sin.
वन्ध्यापि लभते पुत्त्रं कन्या विन्दति सत्पतिम् । क्षेमार्थो लभते क्षेमं बोगार्थो बोगमाप्नुयात् ॥ १,२४०.
Even a barren woman obtains a son, a maiden finds a worthy husband; one seeking security attains security, one seeking enjoyment attains enjoyment.
मङ्गलार्थो मङ्गलानि गुणार्थो गुणमाप्नुयात् । काव्यार्थो च कवित्वं च सारार्थो सारमाप्नुयात् ॥ १,२४०.
One seeking auspiciousness attains auspicious things, one seeking virtues attains virtue; one seeking poetry attains poetic skill, one seeking essence attains the essence.
ज्ञानार्थो लभते ज्ञानं सर्वसंसारमर्दनम् । इदं स्वस्त्ययनं धन्यं गारुडं गरुडेरितम् ॥ १,२४०.
One seeking knowledge attains knowledge that destroys all worldly bondage; this Garuḍa Purāṇa, spoken by Garuḍa, is auspicious and blessed.
नाकाले मरणं तस्य श्लोकमेकं तु यः पठेत् । श्लोकार्धपठनादस्य दुष्टशत्रुक्षयो ध्रुवम् ॥ १,२४०.
For the one who recites even a single verse, untimely death does not occur; by reciting half a verse, the destruction of wicked enemies is certain.
सूताच्छ्रुत्वा शौनकस्तुनौमिषे मुनिभिः क्रतौ । अहं ब्रहेति संध्यायन्मुक्तोभूद्गरुडध्वजात् ॥ १,२४०.
Having heard from Sūta, Śaunaka praised him along with the sages in the sacrifice; Sandhyāyana, saying 'I am Brahman,' was liberated by Garuḍa's banner.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् श्रीगणेशाय नमः । तत्रादिमे द्वितीयांशे प्रेतकाण्डो धर्मकाण्डनामारभ्यते । ओं नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय । नारायणं नमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम् । देवीं सरस्वतीं चैव ततो जयमुदीरयेत् ॥ २,१.म ॥ धर्मन्दृढबद्धमूलो वेदस्कन्धः पुराणशाखाढ्यः । क्रतुकुसुमो मोक्षफलो मधुसूदनपादपो जयति ॥ २,१.
The Great Garuḍa Purāṇa: Salutation to Śrī Gaṇeśa. In this second part, the section called the Book of the Dead, the Dharma Section, begins. Om, obeisance to the Blessed Vāsudeva. Having bowed to Nārāyaṇa, the supreme man, and also to the goddess Sarasvatī, then let victory be proclaimed. Victorious is the tree of dharma, firmly rooted, with the Vedas as its trunk, adorned with the branches of the Purāṇas, blossoming with sacrifices, bearing the fruit of liberation, and standing as the tree of Madhusūdana.
नैमिषेऽनिमिषक्षेत्रे शौनकाद्या मुनीश्वराः । कर्मणामन्तरे सूतं स्वासीनमिदमब्रुवन् ॥ २,१.
In Naimiṣa, the field of the sleepless, the great sages led by Śaunaka, while performing a ritual, spoke these words to Sūta, who was seated.
सूत जानासि सकलं वस्तु व्यासप्रसादतः । तेन नः सन्दिहानानां सन्देहं छेत्तुमर्हसि ॥ २,१.
O Sūta, you know all things by the grace of Vyāsa; therefore, you should dispel the doubts of us who are uncertain.
यथा तृणजलौकेति न्यायमा श्रित्य कञ्चन । देहिनोऽन्यतनुप्राप्तिं केचित्त्वेवं वदन्ति हि ॥ २,१.
Relying on the analogy of grass, water, and a boat, some indeed say that the embodied soul attains another body.
केचित्पुनर्यातनानां यामीनामुपभोगतः । पश्चाद्देहान्तरप्राप्तिं वदन्ति किमु तत्रसत् ॥ २,१.
Others say that, after experiencing the results of punishments in the realms of Yama, one attains another body; what is the truth in this matter?
सूत उवाच । साधु पृष्टं महाभागाः शृणुध्वं भवतां पुनः । सन्देहो नोपपद्येत लोकार्थं किल पृच्छताम् ॥ २,१.
Sūta said: Well asked, O blessed ones! Listen again. No doubt should arise for those who ask for the sake of the world.
