शङ्खचक्रधरं देवं व्यक्तरूपिणमव्ययम् । अधोऽक्षजं प्रपन्नोस्मि किन्नो मृत्युः करिष्यति ॥ १,२३३.
I have taken refuge in the Lord who bears the conch and discus, whose form is manifest and imperishable, who is below and unborn—what can death do to me?
वराहं वामनं विष्णुं नारसिंहं जनार्दनम् । माधवं च प्रपन्नोऽस्मि किन्नो मृत्युः करिष्यति ॥ १,२३३.
I have taken refuge in Varāha, Vāmana, Viṣṇu, Nārasiṃha, Janārdana, and Mādhava—what can death do to me?
पुरुषं पुष्करक्षेत्रबीजं पुण्यं जगत्पतिम् । लोकनाथं प्रपन्नोऽस्मि किन्नो मृत्युः करिष्यति ॥ १,२३३.
I have taken refuge in the Person, the seed of Puṣkara-kshetra, the virtuous Lord of the universe, the protector of all worlds—what can death do to me?
सहस्रशिरसं देवं व्यक्ताव्यक्तं सनातनम् । महायोगं प्रपन्नोऽस्मि किन्नो मृत्युः करिष्यति ॥ १,२३३.
I have taken refuge in the God with a thousand heads, manifest and unmanifest, eternal, the great yogin—what can death do to me?
भूतात्मानं महात्मानं यज्ञयोनिमयोनिजम् । विश्वरूपं प्रपन्नोऽस्मि किन्नो मूत्युः करिष्यति ॥ १,२३३.
I have taken refuge in the soul of all beings, the great soul, the source and womb of sacrifice, the one of universal form—what can death do to me?
इत्युदीरितमाकर्ण्य स्तोत्रं तस्य महात्मनुः । अपयातस्ततो मृत्युर्विष्णुदूतैः प्रपीडितः ॥ १,२३३.
Hearing this hymn spoken by that great soul, Death fled from there, tormented by the messengers of Viṣṇu.
इति तेन जितो मृत्युर्मार्कण्डेयेन धीमता । प्रसन्ने पुण्डरीकाक्षे नृसिंहे नास्तिदुर्लभम् ॥ १,२३३.
Thus Death was conquered by the wise Mārkaṇḍeya; when the lotus-eyed Nṛsiṃha is pleased, nothing is unattainable.
मृत्य्वष्टकमिदं पुण्यं मृत्युप्रशमनं शुभम् । मार्कण्डेयहितार्थाय स्वयं विष्णुरुवाच ह ॥ १,२३३.
This auspicious and meritorious eight-verse hymn to Death, which calms death, was spoken by Viṣṇu himself for the benefit of Mārkaṇḍeya.
इदं यः पठते भक्त्या त्रिकालं नियतं शुचिः । नाकाले तस्य मृत्युः स्यान्नरस्याच्युतचेतसः ॥ १,२३३.
Whoever recites this with devotion, three times a day, with discipline and purity, for that person, whose mind is fixed on Acyuta, death does not come at the wrong time.
हृत्पद्ममध्ये पुरुषं पुराणं नारायणं शाश्वतमप्रमेयम् । विचिन्त्य सूर्यादतिराजमानं मृत्युं स योगि जितवांस्तथैव ॥ १,२३३.
Meditating on the ancient, eternal, immeasurable Nārāyaṇa, the Person, shining brighter than the sun, in the lotus of the heart, the yogin thus conquers death.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् २३४ सूत उवाच । वक्ष्येऽहमच्युतस्तोत्रं शृणु शौनक सर्वदम् । ब्रह्मा पृष्टो नारदाय यथोवाच तथा परम् ॥ १,२३४.
Sūta said: I will declare the hymn to Acyuta; listen, O Śaunaka, bestower of all. As Brahmā was questioned by Nārada, so he spoke the supreme.
नारद उवाच । यथाक्षयोऽव्ययो विष्णुः स्तोतव्यो वरदो मया । प्रत्यहं चार्चनाकाले तथा त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥ १,२३४.
Nārada said: As Viṣṇu is imperishable and undecaying, so he should be praised by me, the bestower of boons; and every day at the time of worship, you should speak thus.
ते धन्यास्ते सुजन्मानस्ते हि सर्वसुखप्रदाः । सफलं जीवितं तेषां ये स्तुवन्ति सदाच्युतम् ॥ १,२३४.
They are blessed, well-born, and bestowers of all happiness; their lives are fruitful, those who always praise Acyuta.
ब्रह्मोवाच । मुने स्तोत्रं प्रवक्ष्यामिः वासुदेवस्य मुक्तिदम् । शृणु येन स्तुतः सम्यक्पूजाकाले प्रसीदति ॥ १,२३४.
Brahmā said: O sage, I will declare the hymn to Vāsudeva, which grants liberation; listen, by which, when praised properly at the time of worship, he becomes pleased.
ओं नमो (भगवतेः वासुदेवाच नमः सर्वापहारिणे । नमो विशुद्धदेहाय नमो ज्ञानस्वरूपिणे ॥ १,२३४.
Om, obeisance to Bhagavān Vāsudeva, obeisance to the remover of all, obeisance to the one with pure form, obeisance to the embodiment of knowledge.
नमः सर्वसुरेशाय नमः श्रीवत्सधारिणे । नमश्चर्मासिहस्ताय नमः पङ्कजमालिने ॥ १,२३४.
Obeisance to the lord of all gods, obeisance to the bearer of the Śrīvatsa mark, obeisance to the one holding a sword and shield, obeisance to the one adorned with a lotus garland.
नमो विश्वप्रतिष्ठाय नमः पीताम्बराय च । नमो नृसिंहरूपाय वैकुण्ठाय नमोनमः ॥ १,२३४.
Obeisance to the foundation of the universe, obeisance to the one clad in yellow garments, obeisance to the one in the form of Nṛsiṃha, obeisance again and again to Vaikuṇṭha.
नमः पङ्कजनाभाय नमः क्षीरोदशायिने । नमः सहस्रशीर्षाय नमो नागाङ्गशायिने ॥ १,२३४.
Obeisance to the lotus-naveled one, obeisance to the one who lies on the ocean of milk, obeisance to the thousand-headed one, obeisance to the one who reclines on the serpent.
नमः परशुहस्ताय नमः क्षत्त्रान्तकारिणे । नमः सत्यप्रतिज्ञाय ह्यजिताय नमोनमः ॥ १,२३४.
Obeisance to the one holding an axe, obeisance to the destroyer of the kṣattriyas, obeisance to the one true to his promise, obeisance again and again to the unconquered one.
नमस्त्रै लोक्यनाथाय नमश्चक्रधारय च । नमः शिवाय सूक्ष्माय पुराणाय नमोनमः ॥ १,२३४.
Obeisance to the lord of the three worlds, obeisance to the wielder of the discus, obeisance to the auspicious, subtle, ancient one—again and again, obeisance.
नमो वामनरूपाय बलिराज्यापहारिणे । नमो यज्ञवराहाय गोविन्दाय नमोनमः ॥ १,२३४.
Salutations to You who took the form of Vāmana, the taker of Bali's kingdom; salutations to You who are the sacrificial Boar, to Govinda, repeated salutations.
नमस्ते परमानन्द नमस्ते परमाक्षर । नमस्ते ज्ञानसद्भाव नमस्ते ज्ञानदायक ॥ १,२३४.
Salutations to You, Supreme Bliss; salutations to You, Supreme Imperishable; salutations to You, whose nature is true knowledge; salutations to You, the Giver of knowledge.
नमस्ते परमाद्वैत नमस्ते पुरुषोत्तम । नमस्ते विश्वकृद्देव नमस्ते विश्वभावन ॥ १,२३४.
Salutations to You, Supreme Non-dual; salutations to You, Highest Person; salutations to You, God, Creator of the universe; salutations to You, Sustainer of the universe.
नमस्ते स्ताद्विश्वनाथ नमस्तेः विश्वकारण । नमस्ते मधुदैत्यघ्न नमस्ते रावणान्तक ॥ १,२३४.
Salutations to You, Lord of the universe; salutations to You, Cause of the universe; salutations to You, Slayer of the demon Madhu; salutations to You, Destroyer of Rāvaṇa.
नमस्ते कंसकेशिघ्न नमस्ते कैटभार्दन । नमस्ते शतपत्राक्ष नमस्ते गरुडध्वज ॥ १,२३४.
Salutations to You, Slayer of Kaṃsa and Keśi; salutations to You, Subduer of Kaiṭabha; salutations to You, Lotus-eyed One; salutations to You, whose banner bears Garuḍa.
नमस्ते कालनेमिघ्न नमस्ते गरुडासन । नमस्ते देवकीपुत्र नमस्ते वृष्णिनन्दन ॥ १,२३४.
Salutations to You, Slayer of Kālanemi; salutations to You, who are seated on Garuḍa; salutations to You, Son of Devakī; salutations to You, Joy of the Vṛṣṇis.
नमस्ते रुक्मिणीकान्त नमस्ते दितिनन्दन । नमस्ते गोकुलावास नमस्ते गोकुलप्रिय ॥ १,२३४.
Salutations to You, Beloved of Rukmiṇī; salutations to You, Son of Aditi; salutations to You, Dweller in Gokula; salutations to You, Beloved of Gokula.
जय गोपवपुः कृष्ण जय गोपीजनप्रिय । जय गोवर्धनाधार जय गोकुलवर्धन ॥ १,२३४.
Victory to You, Kṛṣṇa of the cowherd form; victory to You, Beloved of the gopīs; victory to You, Upholder of Govardhana; victory to You, who cause Gokula to flourish.
जय रावणवीरघ्न जय चाणूरनाशन । जय वृष्णिकुलोद्द्योत जय कालीयमर्दन ॥ १,२३४.
Victory to You, Slayer of Rāvaṇa's heroes; victory to You, Destroyer of Cāṇūra; victory to You, Light of the Vṛṣṇi lineage; victory to You, Subduer of Kāliya.
जय सत्य जगत्साक्षिन् जय सर्वार्थसाधक । जय वेदान्तविद्वेद्य जय सर्वद माधव ॥ १,२३४.
Victory to You, Truth, Witness of the world; victory to You, Accomplisher of all aims; victory to You, who are known through Vedānta; victory to You always, O Mādhava.
