तृणादि चतुरास्यान्तं भूतग्रामं चतुर्विधम् । चराचरं जगत्सर्वं प्रसुप्तं यस्य मायया ॥ १,२३२.
From grass to the four-faced Brahmā, all four kinds of beings, the entire world, moving and unmoving, lies dormant by his māyā.
तस्य विष्णो प्रिसादेन यदि कश्चित्प्रबुध्यते । स निस्तरति संसारं देवानामपि दुस्तरम् ॥ १,२३२.
If, by Viṣṇu's grace, anyone awakens, he crosses over saṃsāra, which is difficult even for the gods to cross.
भोगैश्वर्यमदोन्मत्तस्ततत्त्वज्ञानपराङ्मुखः । पुत्रदारकुटुम्बेषु मत्ताः सीदन्तिजन्तवः ॥ १,२३२.
Deluded by enjoyment, wealth, and pride, turning away from true knowledge, beings, intoxicated with children, wives, and households, sink down.
सर्व एकार्णवे मग्ना जीर्णा वनगजा इव । यस्त्वाननं निबध्नाति दुर्मतिः कोशकारवत् ॥ १,२३२.
All are submerged in the one ocean, like old forest elephants; but the confused one binds himself, like a silkworm, by his own mouth.
तस्य मुक्तिं न पश्यामि जन्मकोटिशतैरपि । तस्मान्नारद सर्वेषां देवानां देवमव्ययम् । आराधयेत्सदा सम्यगध्यायेद्विष्णुं मुदान्वितः ॥ १,२३२.
I do not see liberation for him, even in hundreds of millions of births. Therefore, O Nārada, one should always properly worship the imperishable God of all gods, and meditate on Viṣṇu with joyful mind.
यस्तु विश्वमनाद्यन्तमजमात्मनि संस्थितम् । सर्वज्ञमचलं विष्णुं सदा ध्यायेत्समुच्यते ॥ १,२३२.
But whoever always meditates on Viṣṇu, who is the all-knowing, unchanging, unborn one, established in the self, without beginning or end, is released.
देवं गर्भोचितं विष्णुं सदा ध्यायन्विमुच्यते । अशिरीरं विधातारं सर्वज्ञानमनोरतिम् । अचलं सर्वगं विष्णुं सदा ध्यायन्विमुच्यते ॥ १,२३२.
He who always meditates on Viṣṇu, the divine one present in the womb, the bodiless creator, the all-knowing, the delight of the mind, the unmoving, all-pervading Viṣṇu—he is freed.
निर्विकल्पं निराभासं निष्प्रपञ्चं निरामयम् । वासुदेवं गुरुं विष्णुं सदा ध्यायन्विमुच्यते ॥ १,२३२.
He who always meditates on Viṣṇu, Vāsudeva, the teacher—who is without difference, without appearance, beyond the world, free from affliction—is freed.
सर्वात्मकञ्च वै यावदात्मचैतन्यरूपकम् । शुभमेकाक्षरं विष्णुं सदा ध्यायन्विमुच्यते ॥ १,२३२.
He who always meditates on Viṣṇu, who is the essence of all, whose form is the consciousness of the self, the auspicious, the single imperishable syllable—is freed.
वाक्यातीतं त्रिकालज्ञं विश्वेशं लोकसाक्षिणम् । सर्वस्मादुत्तमं विष्णुं सदा ध्यायन्विमुच्यते ॥ १,२३२.
He who always meditates on Viṣṇu, who is beyond words, knower of the three times, lord of the universe, witness of the worlds, and supreme above all—is freed.
ब्रह्मादिदेवगन्धर्वैर्मुनिभिः सिद्धचारणैः । योगिभिः सेवितं विष्णुं सदा ध्यायन्विमुच्यते ॥ १,२३२.
He who always meditates on Viṣṇu, who is worshipped by Brahmā and the other gods, by Gandharvas, sages, Siddhas, Cāraṇas, and Yogis—is freed.
संसारबन्धनामुक्तिमिच्छंल्लोको ह्यशेषतः । स्तुत्वैवं वरदं विष्णुं सदा ध्यायन्विमुच्यते ॥ १,२३२.
Whoever in the world desires complete release from the bonds of existence, by praising Viṣṇu, the bestower of boons, and always meditating on him, is freed.
संसारबन्धनात्कोऽपि मुक्तिमिच्छन्समाहितः । अनन्तमव्ययं देवं विष्णं विश्वप्रतिष्ठितम् । विश्वेश्वरमजं विष्णुं संदा ध्यायन्विमुच्यते ॥ १,२३२.
Whoever, intent, desires liberation from the bondage of existence, and always meditates on Viṣṇu—the infinite, imperishable God, established in the universe, lord of the universe, unborn—is freed.
सूत उवाच । नारदेन पुरा पृष्ट एवं स वृषभध्वजः । येत्तेन तस्मै व्याख्यातं तन्मया कथितं तव ॥ १,२३२.
Sūta said: Long ago, when Nārada asked, the Bull-bannered One (Śiva) explained this to him; I have now recounted that to you.
तमेव सततन्ध्यायन्निर्व्ययं ब्रह्म निष्कलम् । अवाप्स्यसि ध्रुवं तात ! शाश्वतं पदमव्ययम् ॥ १,२३२.
By always meditating on that imperishable, partless Brahman, O dear one, you will surely attain the eternal, undecaying state.
अश्वमेधसहस्राणि वाजपेयशतानि च । क्षणमेकाग्रचित्तस्य कलां नार्हन्ति षोडशीम् ॥ १,२३२.
A thousand Aśvamedha sacrifices and hundreds of Vājapeya sacrifices do not equal even a sixteenth part of a single moment of one-pointed mind.
श्रुत्वा सुरऋषिर्विष्णोः प्राधान्यमिदमीश्वरात् । स विष्णुं सम्यगाराध्य सिद्धः पदमवाप्तवान् ॥ १,२३२.
Having heard this supremacy of Viṣṇu from the Lord, the sage among the gods, by properly worshipping Viṣṇu, attained the accomplished state.
यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वा पि नित्यमेव स्तवोत्तमम् । कोटिजन्मकृतं पापमपि तस्य प्रणश्यति ॥ १,२३२.
Whoever recites or hears this excellent hymn daily, even the sin accumulated over millions of births is destroyed for him.
विष्णोः स्तवमिदं दिव्यं महादेवेन कीर्तितम् । प्रयत्नाद्यः पठेन्नित्य ममृतत्वं स गच्छति ॥ १,२३२.
Whoever, with effort, recites daily this divine hymn to Viṣṇu, proclaimed by Mahādeva, attains immortality.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् २३३ सूत उवाच । स्तोत्रं तत्सं प्रवक्ष्यामि मार्कण्डेयन भाषितम् । दामोदरं प्रपन्नोऽस्मि किन्नो मृत्युः करिष्यति ॥ १,२३३.
Sūta said: I will now declare that hymn, spoken by Mārkaṇḍeya: 'I have taken refuge in Dāmodara—what can death do to me?'
शङ्खचक्रधरं देवं व्यक्तरूपिणमव्ययम् । अधोऽक्षजं प्रपन्नोस्मि किन्नो मृत्युः करिष्यति ॥ १,२३३.
I have taken refuge in the Lord who bears the conch and discus, whose form is manifest and imperishable, who is below and unborn—what can death do to me?
वराहं वामनं विष्णुं नारसिंहं जनार्दनम् । माधवं च प्रपन्नोऽस्मि किन्नो मृत्युः करिष्यति ॥ १,२३३.
I have taken refuge in Varāha, Vāmana, Viṣṇu, Nārasiṃha, Janārdana, and Mādhava—what can death do to me?
पुरुषं पुष्करक्षेत्रबीजं पुण्यं जगत्पतिम् । लोकनाथं प्रपन्नोऽस्मि किन्नो मृत्युः करिष्यति ॥ १,२३३.
I have taken refuge in the Person, the seed of Puṣkara-kshetra, the virtuous Lord of the universe, the protector of all worlds—what can death do to me?
सहस्रशिरसं देवं व्यक्ताव्यक्तं सनातनम् । महायोगं प्रपन्नोऽस्मि किन्नो मृत्युः करिष्यति ॥ १,२३३.
I have taken refuge in the God with a thousand heads, manifest and unmanifest, eternal, the great yogin—what can death do to me?
भूतात्मानं महात्मानं यज्ञयोनिमयोनिजम् । विश्वरूपं प्रपन्नोऽस्मि किन्नो मूत्युः करिष्यति ॥ १,२३३.
I have taken refuge in the soul of all beings, the great soul, the source and womb of sacrifice, the one of universal form—what can death do to me?
इत्युदीरितमाकर्ण्य स्तोत्रं तस्य महात्मनुः । अपयातस्ततो मृत्युर्विष्णुदूतैः प्रपीडितः ॥ १,२३३.
Hearing this hymn spoken by that great soul, Death fled from there, tormented by the messengers of Viṣṇu.
इति तेन जितो मृत्युर्मार्कण्डेयेन धीमता । प्रसन्ने पुण्डरीकाक्षे नृसिंहे नास्तिदुर्लभम् ॥ १,२३३.
Thus Death was conquered by the wise Mārkaṇḍeya; when the lotus-eyed Nṛsiṃha is pleased, nothing is unattainable.
मृत्य्वष्टकमिदं पुण्यं मृत्युप्रशमनं शुभम् । मार्कण्डेयहितार्थाय स्वयं विष्णुरुवाच ह ॥ १,२३३.
This auspicious and meritorious eight-verse hymn to Death, which calms death, was spoken by Viṣṇu himself for the benefit of Mārkaṇḍeya.
इदं यः पठते भक्त्या त्रिकालं नियतं शुचिः । नाकाले तस्य मृत्युः स्यान्नरस्याच्युतचेतसः ॥ १,२३३.
Whoever recites this with devotion, three times a day, with discipline and purity, for that person, whose mind is fixed on Acyuta, death does not come at the wrong time.
हृत्पद्ममध्ये पुरुषं पुराणं नारायणं शाश्वतमप्रमेयम् । विचिन्त्य सूर्यादतिराजमानं मृत्युं स योगि जितवांस्तथैव ॥ १,२३३.
Meditating on the ancient, eternal, immeasurable Nārāyaṇa, the Person, shining brighter than the sun, in the lotus of the heart, the yogin thus conquers death.
