In that very form, difficult for the gods to behold, Śaṅkara bowed to the Lord of the gods and then praised him.
Śaṅkara said: "Salutations to you, O Lord of the universe, who bears the form of Narasiṃha, destroyer of the lords of the Daityas, whose nails shine like shells."
With a golden body split by the circle of your nails, I bow to Padmanābha, the auspicious teacher of the world, whose roar at the end of the age resounds like the ocean, whose brilliance equals millions of suns.
You are the terror of a thousand Yamas, the valor of a thousand Indras, the wealth of a thousand Kuberas, and the embodiment of a thousand feet.
O one like a thousand moons! Whose steps eclipse a thousand suns, whose energy equals a thousand Rudras, and who is praised by a thousand Brahmās.
Chanted by a thousand Rudras, seen by a thousand eyes, destroyer of a thousand births, liberator from a thousand bonds.
With eyes swift as a thousand winds, a source of compassion for a thousand kings, thus praising the Lord of gods, Hari in the form of Narasiṃha, Śiva, bowing with humility, again made his request.
For the destruction of Andhaka, I created the Mothers, but disregarding my command, they devour the wondrous beings.
Having created them, I am not able to subdue them, O Unconquered One; how can I now bring about their destruction, having made them before?
Thus addressed by Rudra, Hari in the form of Narasiṃha, the Lord of Speech, then spoke from the tip of his thousand-flamed tongue.
In this way, the all-pervading Hari withdrew all the fierce Mothers and the hosts of gods, bringing peace to the world, and then vanished.
Whoever recites this hymn to Narasiṃha with controlled senses, for him, as for Rudra, there is no doubt that his desires will be fulfilled.
One should meditate on Narasiṃha, with eyes like the rising sun, seated on a perfect lotus, blazing like fire, without beginning, middle, or end, unborn, ancient, Lord of both the higher and lower, the foundation of all worlds.
Whoever continually recites this dispels the net of sorrow, as the sun's rays drive away mist; when one contemplates the form of the Mothers, at that very moment, he stands near them.
Even the Lord of gods, the destroyer of Tripura, having propitiated that supreme god in the form of Narasiṃha and obtained his favor, protected the hosts of world-mothers.
Sūta said: I shall now declare the nectar of the lineage, the hymn which Hara spoke when questioned by Nārada; listen as it was told to Nārada.
Nārada said: He who, in the turmoil of existence, is always bound by dualities, by desire and anger, by good and evil, and by the objects of the senses, suffers and is of confused mind.
For a moment, a being is released from the ocean of death and transmigration; O Lord, destroyer of Tripura, I wish to hear from you about this.
Hearing these words of Nārada, the three-eyed Śiva, with a gracious face, spoke to that sage.
Maheśvara said: I shall declare to you the supreme secret, the nectar of knowledge, O best of sages; listen, for it destroys sorrow and the fear of bondage.
From grass to the four-faced Brahmā, all four kinds of beings, the entire world, moving and unmoving, lies dormant by his māyā.
If, by Viṣṇu's grace, anyone awakens, he crosses over saṃsāra, which is difficult even for the gods to cross.
Deluded by enjoyment, wealth, and pride, turning away from true knowledge, beings, intoxicated with children, wives, and households, sink down.
All are submerged in the one ocean, like old forest elephants; but the confused one binds himself, like a silkworm, by his own mouth.
I do not see liberation for him, even in hundreds of millions of births. Therefore, O Nārada, one should always properly worship the imperishable God of all gods, and meditate on Viṣṇu with joyful mind.
But whoever always meditates on Viṣṇu, who is the all-knowing, unchanging, unborn one, established in the self, without beginning or end, is released.
He who always meditates on Viṣṇu, the divine one present in the womb, the bodiless creator, the all-knowing, the delight of the mind, the unmoving, all-pervading Viṣṇu—he is freed.
He who always meditates on Viṣṇu, Vāsudeva, the teacher—who is without difference, without appearance, beyond the world, free from affliction—is freed.
He who always meditates on Viṣṇu, who is the essence of all, whose form is the consciousness of the self, the auspicious, the single imperishable syllable—is freed.
He who always meditates on Viṣṇu, who is beyond words, knower of the three times, lord of the universe, witness of the worlds, and supreme above all—is freed.
