कृतपापश्चरेद्रोधे द्वौ पादौ बन्धयन्पशोः । सर्वकृच्छ्रं निपानेस्यात्कान्तारे गृहदाहतः ॥ १,२२२.
One who has committed a sin should wander in a pen, binding two legs like a beast; he should perform the most severe penance in a deserted place, or after his house has been burned.
कण्ठाभरणदोषेण कृच्छ्रपादं मृते गवि । अस्थिभङ्गं गवां कृत्वा शृङ्गभङ्गमथापि वा ॥ १,२२२.
For the offense of wearing a neck ornament, one should perform the Kṛcchra penance if a cow dies; for breaking the bones or horns of cows, likewise.
त्वग्भेदं पुच्छनाशे वा मासार्धं यावकं पिबेत् । सर्वं हस्त्यश्वशस्त्राद्यैर्निश्चयं कृच्छ्रमेव तु ॥ १,२२२.
For breaking the skin or loss of the tail, one should drink barley-water for half a month. For all offenses involving elephants, horses, or weapons, the Kṛcchra penance is prescribed.
अज्ञानात्प्राश्य विण्मूत्रं सुरासंस्पृष्टमेव च । पुनः संस्कारमायान्ति त्रयो वर्णा द्विजातयः ॥ १,२२२.
If, out of ignorance, one consumes feces, urine, or touches liquor, the three twice-born castes must undergo re-sanctification.
वपनं मेख्ला दण्डो भैक्ष्यचर्याव्रतानि च । निवर्तन्ते द्विजातीनां पुनः संस्कारकर्मणि ॥ १,२२२.
Shaving, the sacred girdle, staff, and vows of begging—these observances are repeated for the twice-born at the time of re-sanctification.
आममांसं घृतं क्षौद्रं स्नेहश्च कालसम्भवाः । अन्त्यभाण्डस्थिताः सर्वे निष्क्रान्ताः शुचयः स्मृताः ॥ १,२२२.
Raw meat, ghee, honey, and oils that have aged, all kept in impure vessels, are considered pure once removed from them.
तैलादिघृतमाध्वीकं पण्यद्रव्यं द्रवस्तथा । एकभक्तं क्रमान्नक्तं एकैकाहमयाचितम् । उपवासः पादकृच्छ्रं कृच्छार्धद्विगुणं हि यत् ॥ १,२२२.
Oil, clarified butter, honey, merchandise, and other liquids; eating once a day, eating in sequence, eating at night, eating only for one day, begging for food for a single day, fasting, and the pādakṛcchra penance—all these are considered half or double the kṛcchra, depending on the practice.
प्राजापत्यन्तु तत्स्याच्च सर्वपातकनाशनम् । कृच्छ्रं सप्तोपवासैश्च महासान्तपनं स्मृतम् ॥ १,२२२.
The prājāpatya penance is said to be so, and it destroys all sins. The kṛcchra penance, performed with seven fasts, is known as the great sāntapana.
त्र्यहमुष्णं पिबेच्छापः त्र्यहमुष्णं पयः पिबेत् । त्र्यमुष्णं पिबेत्सर्पिस्तप्तकृच्छ्रमघापहम् ॥ १,२२२.
For three days, one should drink hot water; for three days, hot milk; for three days, hot clarified butter. This is the heated kṛcchra, which removes sin.
द्वादशाहोपवासेन पराकः सर्वपापहा । एकैकं वर्धयेत्पिण्डं शुक्ले कृष्णे च ह्रासयेत् ॥ १,२२२.
By fasting for twelve days, the parāka penance removes all sins. One should increase the portion each day during the bright fortnight and decrease it during the dark fortnight.
पयः काञ्चनवर्णायाः श्वेतवर्णं च गोमयम् । गोमूत्रं ताम्रवर्णाया नीलवर्णभवं घृतम् ॥ १,२२२.
Milk is for those of golden color; cow dung for those of white color; cow urine for those of copper color; clarified butter for those of blue color.
दधि स्यात्कृष्णवर्णाया दर्भोदकसमायुतम् । गोमूत्रमाषकाण्यष्टौ गोमयस्य चतुष्टयम् ॥ १,२२२.
Curd is for those of black color, mixed with darbha water; eight beans are for cow urine, and four for cow dung.
क्षीरस्य द्वादश प्रोक्ता दध्नस्तु दश उच्यते । घृतस्य माषकाः पञ्च पञ्चगव्यं मलापहम् ॥ १,२२२.
Twelve beans are prescribed for milk, ten for curd, five for clarified butter. The pañcagavya removes impurities.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् २२३ ब्रह्मोवाच मुनिभिश्चरिता धर्मा भक्त्या व्यास मयोदिताः । यैर्विष्णुस्तुष्यते चैव सूर्यादिपरिचारणात् ॥ १,२२३.
Brahma said: The righteous duties practiced by sages with devotion, as taught by me and Vyāsa, are those by which Viṣṇu is pleased, including service to the Sun and others.
तर्पणेन च होमेन सन्ध्याया वन्दनेन च । प्राप्यते भगवान् विष्णुर्धर्मकामार्थमोक्षदः ॥ १,२२३.
Through offerings, oblations, and worship at the time of twilight, the blessed Lord Viṣṇu is attained, who grants righteousness, desire, wealth, and liberation.
धर्मो हि भगवान्विष्णुः पूजी विष्णोस्तु तर्पणम् । होमः सन्ध्या तथा ध्यानं धारणा सकलं हरिः ॥ १,२२३.
Dharma is indeed the blessed Lord Viṣṇu; worship of Viṣṇu is the offering; oblation, twilight worship, meditation, and concentration—all are Hari.
सूच उवाच । प्रलयं जगतो वक्ष्ये तत्सर्वं शृणु शौनक । चतुर्युगसहस्रन्तु कल्पैकाब्जदिनं स्मृतम् ॥ १,२२३.
Sūca said: I will describe the dissolution of the world; listen to all of it, O Śaunaka. A thousand cycles of four ages make one day of Brahma, known as a kalpa.
कृतत्रेताद्वापरादियुगावस्था निबोधमे । कृते धर्मश्चतुष्पाच्च सत्यं दानं तपो दया ॥ १,२२३.
Understand the conditions of the ages—Kṛta, Tretā, Dvāpara, and Kali. In the Kṛta age, dharma stands on four legs: truth, charity, austerity, and compassion.
धर्मपाता हरिश्चेति सन्तुष्टा ज्ञानिनो नराः । चतुर्वर्षसहस्राणि नरा जीवन्ति वै तदा ॥ १,२२३.
When dharma declines, Hari is present, and the wise are content. In that age, humans live for four thousand years.
कृतान्ते क्षत्त्रियैर्विप्रा विट्शूद्राश्च जिता द्विजैः । शूरश्चातिबलो विष्णू रक्षांसि च जघान ह ॥ १,२२३.
At the end of the Kṛta age, the kṣatriyas conquered the brāhmaṇas, the vaiśyas, and the śūdras were subdued by the twice-born. The mighty and valiant Viṣṇu destroyed the demons.
त्रेतायुगे त्रिपाद्धर्मः सत्यदानदयात्मकः । नरा यज्ञपरास्तस्मिंस्तथा क्षत्रोद्भवं जगत् ॥ १,२२३.
In the Tretā age, dharma stands on three legs, characterized by truth, charity, and compassion. People are devoted to sacrifice, and the world arises from the kṣatriyas.
रक्तो हरिर्नरैः पूज्यो नरा दशशतायुषः । तत्र विष्णुर्भोमरथः क्षत्रिया राक्षसानहन् ॥ १,२२३.
Hari is worshipped by people with reddish hue, and humans live for a thousand years. There, Viṣṇu rides a chariot on earth and the kṣatriyas slay the rākṣasas.
द्विपादविग्रहो धर्मः पीतताञ्चाच्युते गते । चतुः शतायुषो लोका द्विजक्षत्रोद्भवाः प्रजाः ॥ १,२२३.
In the Dvāpara age, dharma stands on two legs, and its decline occurs as Acyuta departs. People live for four hundred years, and the progeny arise from brāhmaṇas and kṣatriyas.
तत्र दृष्ट्वाल्पबुद्धींश्च विष्णुर्व्यासस्वरूपधृक् । तदेकन्तु यजुर्वेदं? चतुर्धा व्यभजत्पुनः ॥ १,२२३.
There, seeing people of little intellect, Viṣṇu, taking the form of Vyāsa, divided the Yajur Veda again into four parts.
शिष्यानध्यापयामास समस्तांस्तान्निबोध मे । ऋग्वेदमथ पैलन्त्सामवेदञ्च जैमिनिम् ॥ १,२२३.
He taught all his disciples; listen to them from me: Paila received the Rigveda, Jaimini the Samaveda.
अथर्वाणं सुमन्तुन्तु यजुर्वेदं महामुनिम् । वैशम्पायनमङ्गन्तु पुराणं सूतमेव च । अष्टादशपुराणानि यैर्वेद्यो हरिरेव हि ॥ १,२२३.
Sumantu received the Atharvaveda, the great sage received the Yajurveda, Vaishampayana received the Anga, and Suta received the Purana; the eighteen Puranas by which Hari is known.
सर्गश्च प्रतिसर्गश्च वंशो मन्वन्तराणि च । वंशानुचरितच्चैव पुराणं पञ्चलक्षणम् ॥ १,२२३.
Creation, dissolution, genealogies, cycles of Manus, and the accounts of lineages—these are the five characteristics of a Purana.
ब्राह्मं पाद्मं वैष्णवञ्च शैवं भागवतन्तथा । भविष्यन्नारदीयञ्चस्कान्दं लिङ्गं वराहकम् ॥ १,२२३.
The Brahma, Padma, Vaishnava, Shaiva, Bhagavata, Bhavishya, Naradiya, Skanda, Linga, and Varaha Puranas.
मार्कण्डेयं तथाग्नेयं ब्रह्मवैवर्तमेव च । कौर्मं मात्स्यं गारुडञ्च वायवीयमनन्तरम् । अष्टादशसमुद्दिष्टं ब्रह्माण्डमिति संज्ञितम् ॥ १,२२३.
Markandeya, Agneya, Brahmavaivarta, Kurma, Matsya, Garuda, Vayu, and the Brahmanda—these eighteen are enumerated as the Brahmanda.
अन्यान्युपपुराणानि मुनिभिः कथितानि तु । आद्यं सनत्कुमारोक्तं नारसिंहमथापरम् ॥ १,२२३.
Other subsidiary Puranas have been recounted by sages: the first spoken by Sanatkumara, then the Narasimha.
