Say: 'Enjoy as you please, with restraint of speech.' After they have eaten, recite the pitṛstotra for the seven ailments. Those seven ailments are: deer in Daśārṇa, black antelope in the mountains, chakravāka birds on the autumn island, swans in the Mānasa lake.

Then, facing south with the sacred thread over the left shoulder, release the offering in front. Om, those who were burned by fire, those still living, and those not burned in my lineage—may they be satisfied by what is given on the earth; may the satisfied ones attain the highest state. Thus, scatter food mixed with ghee and water over kuśa grass on the ground.

Then, according to the Brahmin's order, give water for rinsing the mouth. As before, recite the Sāvitrī and the three verses of 'Madhuvāta.' Om, may it be pleasing to you—this is the offering to the deity-Brahmin. When 'It is pleasing' is said, recite: 'The remaining food'—this is the offering. Eat together with the desired ones. To the ancestor-Brahmin, with the sacred thread over the left shoulder, recite: 'You are satisfied'—this is the offering. When 'We are satisfied' is said, sprinkle water on the ground, mark a circle and square, and scatter sesame.

Om, O such-and-such lineage, my father, O so-and-so Devaśarman, together with your wife, this is your piṇḍa seat with svadhā. Thus, in the middle of the line, for the grandfather, recite the Sāvitrī and 'Madhuvāta' three times, make a piṇḍa of food with ghee, and place it on kuśa grass, addressing: 'O such-and-such lineage, my father, O so-and-so Śarman, together with your wife, this is your piṇḍa with svadhā.' Thus, in the middle of the line, for the grandfather. Then, recite the Sāvitrī and 'Madhuvāta' three times, scatter the piṇḍa near the piṇḍa. Om, 'May those who eat be pleased'—wipe the hand on the kuśa grass, wash the piṇḍa with water, and recite: 'O such-and-such lineage, my father, O so-and-so Śarman, together with your wife, this is your water; those who follow you, let them also receive svadhā.' Make the piṇḍa vessel face down, join the hands, and recite: 'Ancestors, rejoice and prosper according to your share.' Touch water with the left hand, turn away, face north, hold the breath three times, and recite: 'Salutations to the six seasons.'

Turn away with the left hand and offer flowers. May unbroken rice and arishta be mine for merit, peace, and nourishment. Facing south, recite: 'May my ancestors rejoice according to their share.' Loosen the garment, join the hands, and recite: 'Salutations to you, ancestors, salutations to you.' 'Ancestors, accept the food given by us'—this is the viewing of the house. Then, always recite: 'May you, ancestors, dwell here.' After viewing, declare: 'This is your dwelling, ancestors,' and address: 'O such-and-such lineage, this is your dwelling with svadhā'—this is the offering of garments. With the left hand, take the water vessel and pour water over the piṇḍa, reciting: 'O carrier of nourishment, nectar, ghee, milk,' and so on.

O Indra, you are the leader.' Recite this three times.

Thus, offer water for sipping to the maternal ancestor Brahmins. Om, may it be well sprinkled—sprinkle water on the ground. Om, the gods dwell in the midst of waters; all is established in water. May auspicious waters be placed in the Brahmin's hand for us. May the waters be auspicious—this is the offering of water to the Brahmin. Lakṣmī dwells in flowers, Lakṣmī dwells in the lotus, Lakṣmī dwells in the cowshed; may you always have happiness. May happiness be yours—this is the offering of flowers. May unbroken rice and arishta be mine for merit, peace, nourishment, and firmness. Whatever brings good in the world, may that always be mine. For those of such-and-such lineage, for our fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers, together with their wives, may this offering of food, drink, and so forth be inexhaustible—thus, the gift of sesame-water is placed in the hands of the Brahmin representing the ancestors. The Brahmin should say, 'So be it.' May this blessing be inexhaustible for maternal ancestors and others. Om: May the ancestors be benign; may our lineage flourish; may our benefactors prosper; may the Vedas continue; may faith not depart from us; may we give much; may we have abundant food; may we receive guests; may there be no beggars among us, nor may we beg from anyone. May these true blessings prevail.

May there be harmony. Upon saying 'So be it,' the purification for the place where the offering is made is performed for the sake of the arghya. Taking the sacred grass, one touches the Brahmin representing the ancestors with it and recites the svadhā invocation: 'Om, let svadhā be offered to the fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers of such-and-such lineage, named so-and-so, together with their wives.' Upon saying 'Let svadhā be,' one pours a stream of water mixed with ghee over the offering, reciting 'You carry nourishment, immortality, ghee.'

Then, 'Om, may all the gods be pleased in this sacrifice'—the gift of barley-water is placed in the hand of the Brahmin representing the gods. Upon saying 'May they be pleased,' one recites 'Om, for the deities' three times.

Facing downward, after moving the offering vessels and performing purification, one sits facing east with the sacred thread on the right shoulder. 'Om, for such-and-such lineage, for the Brahmin named so-and-so, together with his wife, for the establishment of the śrāddha, I give this silver as a gift to you.' Thus, the gift is given to the Brahmin representing the gods.

Then, the question is asked: 'Are the offerings for the ancestor-Brahmin complete?' Upon confirming their completion, one pours a stream of milk over the offering and moves it. For the guest-Brahmin, the offering vessel is turned upright, and one recites: 'Om, O givers, O givers, may we be wealthy; O sages, immortal, knowers of truth, drink this honey, rejoice, be satisfied, depart by the divine paths.' Thus, the offerings are consigned to the heavens. 'May the offspring of the sacrifice be born; may these heavens and earths of all forms come; may the ancestors and Soma attain immortality.' Thus, the gods are dismissed. 'Om, let them approach'—thus, the ancestor-Brahmins are dismissed. The Brahmins who have not yet departed are asked to return. The remaining offerings are given to cows and others.

Brahma said: I will explain the daily śrāddha, as before, with its distinctions. Upon saying 'I will perform,' the invocation to the other god-Brahmins is likewise made.

Then, for the increase of such-and-such, for the lineage of such-and-such, for my great-grandmother named so-and-so, the śrāddha for the nāndīmukha ancestors should be performed with prepared food, by me for you—thus, the invocation to the Brahmin representing the great-grandmother. Brahma said: I will explain the sapiṇḍīkaraṇa rite, to be performed at the completion of a year or on its last day. When performed properly at the right time for the departed, it grants the world of the ancestors.

The sapiṇḍīkaraṇa should be performed in the afternoon, as before. Invitation of the Brahmins representing the ancestors is made. 'Om, for the gods called Purūrava and Dravasasaṃjña, this seat is offered.' Seating is given on the left side. Invocation follows. Then, for the grandfather, great-grandfather, and aged great-grandfather, together with their wives, the śrāddha is performed, permission is sought, three vessels are prepared, sacred grass is placed on them, and covered with another vessel. The assurance of unbrokenness is recited, and similarly, for the father and his wife, permission is sought for performing the śrāddha in the name of the departed, and the assurance of unbrokenness is recited for the vessel of the gods.

After completing this, the vessels for the grandfather, great-grandfather, and aged great-grandfather are slightly moved in order. After uncovering them, one recites: 'Om, those ancestors who are united in mind in Yama's realm, may their world be svadhā, may the sacrifice be established among the gods.' 'Om, those ancestors who are united in mind among the living, who are mine among the living, may prosperity be established in me in this world for a hundred years.' With these two mantras, water from the ancestor vessel is poured into the vessels for the grandfather and great-grandfather, abandoning the vessel for the aged great-grandfather. The water and sacred grass from the vessels for the grandfather and great-grandfather are placed into the ancestor vessel.

Then, the offering of pure water in a vessel is given into the hands of the ancestral priest; with a flower placed in the vessel, the head, hands, and feet are touched in reverence. Another water offering is given into the priest’s hands; lifting the vessel with both hands, the mantra 'Om, O Divine Ones,' is recited, followed by 'Om, to the ancestor of such-and-such lineage, my grandfather, named such-and-such, together with his wife, this is your arghya, svadhā.' Using the same ancestral vessel, a small amount of arghya water, together with the purifying grass, is taken and, for the purpose of offering to the ancestors, is covered with another vessel and placed mouth-down on the southern tip of the sacred grass on the left side of the ancestral priest, with the words, 'This is the place for the ancestors.'

To the great-grandfathers and the elders before them, offerings such as fragrance are made in the fire; the remaining food is placed in the vessel for the great-grandfathers and others. After completing the mantras for the great-grandfather’s vessel in order, the mantras for the priest’s vessel are also performed. Placing the thumb and scattering sesame seeds, the mantra is recited: 'Of such-and-such lineage, this food with ghee, with water, with side dishes, free from prohibited items, is for you and for those who follow you; to them, svadhā.'

Then, water is offered to the gods and others; if a guest arrives, a guest śrāddha is performed. At this time, the scattering of offerings is done. After bowing to the ancestors beginning with the great-grandfather, the ancestral priest is addressed: 'Om, may it be tasted by you.' The mantra is recited: 'Om, to the ancestor of such-and-such lineage, my father, named such-and-such, together with his wife, this is your piṇḍa, and to those who follow you, svadhā; may the piṇḍa vessel be unbroken.' Then, after completing the resolve and the words for success, the piṇḍa is divided in two; reciting the two mantras 'ye samānāḥ sumanasaḥ,' the portions are placed in the vessels for the great-grandfather and the elders. After offering fragrance and other items to the piṇḍas, they are moved. The ancestral priest is addressed with the svadhā formula for the guest. The priests perform purification. After the meal, betel is given. May the water be well sprinkled; may it be auspicious. Water is given into the hands of the priest in order for the great-grandfather and elders. 'May the lineage be imperishable,' is said while offering water into the hands of the ancestral priest, with the words, 'May it be established.'
