Salutations to all the gods; these offerings of fragrance, flowers, incense, lamps, and garments are the purifying rites of the sacrificial age. May the giving of fragrance and other items be flawless. Let it be so—this is the response of the Brahmin.

Then, with permission, declare: 'I will perform the Śrāddha for my fathers, grandfathers, great-grandfathers, maternal grandfathers, maternal great-grandfathers, and their elders, together with their wives.' When the Brahmins say, 'Do so,' recite thrice: 'Om, for the deities and the ancestors.'

Om, for those of such-and-such lineage, for my fathers and grandfathers, for those named thus, together with their wives, this seat is offered to you with svadhā—this is the offering of the seat to the Brahmin's left. Om, I will invoke the ancestors. Om. When 'Invoke' is spoken, recite: 'Om, we invoke you, O radiant ones; we invoke you, O kindled ones; bring a hundred ancestors for the offering.' Om, let our gentle ancestors, the Agniṣvāttas, come by divine paths, rejoicing in this sacrifice with svadhā, and grant us blessings. Om, may the gods and ancestors drive away demons from the altar—this is the scattering of sesame. Place water in vessels set at the eastern side. Om, you are sesame, dedicated to Soma, made by the gods, mixed with ancient waters; with svadhā, please the worlds of the ancestors for us—svāhā. This is the offering of sesame.

After offering fragrance and flowers with both hands, raise the ancestor's vessel, recite 'O Divine,' and address: 'O ancestor of such-and-such lineage, O so-and-so Devaśarman, together with your wife, this is your arghya with svadhā.' Taking the impure vessel, place it on the left side, on the right atop the kuśa grass, and recite: 'Om, you are the place for the ancestors,' placing the vessel face-down.

Om, may the worlds and the abodes of ancestors be purified; you are the abode of ancestors. Touch the face-down vessel. For those of such-and-such lineage, for my fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers, together with their wives, these offerings of fragrance, flowers, incense, lamps, garments, and sacred threads are yours with svadhā; with the sacred waters for ancestors, offer fragrance and other items. May the offering of fragrance and other items be inexhaustible. May the resolve be fulfilled—this is the Brahmin's statement. Thus is the ritual of permission for maternal ancestors and others. Om, 'O Divine,'—this is the sweeping of the ground. Then, taking food mixed with ghee, with the sacred thread over the right shoulder, declare to the ancestor-Brahmin: 'Om, I will perform the ritual in the fire.' When told 'Do so,' recite: 'Om, to Agni, carrier of offerings, svāhā,' making two offerings into the hands of the deity-Brahmin, then place the remaining food for the piṇḍa, and the rest in the vessels for ancestors and maternal ancestors.

Placing the vessel and sealing it, put kuśa grass, and with both hands facing downward, take the vessel and recite: 'Om, earth is your vessel, heaven is its cover; I offer nectar into the Brahmin's mouth, svāhā'—this is the consecration of the vessel. Vishnu measured out the worlds, placing his steps threefold, hidden in dust; O Vishnu, protect the offering—this is the placing of the downward-facing Brahmin's thumb in the middle of the food.

Recite 'Apahata' and scatter barley three times. Om, I destroy all that is impure; all demons and evil beings are slain by me. All rakṣasas, yakṣas, and groups of piśācas are slain by me; all yātudhānas are destroyed—this is the scattering of siddhārtha seeds.

Then, for the deities called Dhūrilocana, offer this food with ghee, water, and condiments, reciting 'svāhā,' using water and kuśa grass for the ritual. Om, may this food be inexhaustible; om, may the resolve be fulfilled.

Then, with the sacred thread reversed, place the food with condiments and ghee in the ancestor-Brahmin's vessel, and on top place kuśa grass touching the ground. Recite 'Om, earth is your vessel,' and with both hands upright, take the vessel and recite 'Om, this is Vishnu,' placing the upright Brahmin's thumb on the food. Recite 'Apahata' and scatter sesame. With the left knee touching the ground, address: 'For those of such-and-such lineage, for my fathers and grandfathers, together with their wives, this food with ghee, water, and condiments, free from prohibited items, is offered with svadhā.' Having resolved, recite: 'Om, O carrier of nourishment, nectar, ghee, milk, and sweet liquids, let svadhā be, satisfy my ancestor.' Pour water facing south.

Om, may this Śrāddha be flawless; om, may the resolve be fulfilled. Om, earth, atmosphere, heaven—let us meditate on the divine radiance of Savitṛ; may he inspire our minds. After offering, recite: 'May the sweet winds blow, may the rivers flow with honey, may the herbs be sweet for us, may the nights and dawns be sweet, may the earthly dust be sweet, may heaven be our father, may the trees be sweet for us, may the sun be sweet, may the cows be sweet for us.' Thus, scatter food mixed with ghee and water over kuśa grass on the ground.

Om, O such-and-such lineage, my father, O so-and-so Devaśarman, together with your wife, this is your piṇḍa seat with svadhā. Thus, in the middle of the line, for the grandfather, recite the Sāvitrī and 'Madhuvāta' three times, make a piṇḍa of food with ghee, and place it on kuśa grass, addressing: 'O such-and-such lineage, my father, O so-and-so Śarman, together with your wife, this is your piṇḍa with svadhā.' Thus, in the middle of the line, for the grandfather. Then, recite the Sāvitrī and 'Madhuvāta' three times, scatter the piṇḍa near the piṇḍa. Om, 'May those who eat be pleased'—wipe the hand on the kuśa grass, wash the piṇḍa with water, and recite: 'O such-and-such lineage, my father, O so-and-so Śarman, together with your wife, this is your water; those who follow you, let them also receive svadhā.' Make the piṇḍa vessel face down, join the hands, and recite: 'Ancestors, rejoice and prosper according to your share.' Loosen the garment, join the hands, and recite: 'Salutations to you, ancestors, salutations to you.' 'Ancestors, accept the food given by us'—this is the viewing of the house. Then, always recite: 'May you, ancestors, dwell here.' After viewing, declare: 'This is your dwelling, ancestors,' and address: 'O such-and-such lineage, this is your dwelling with svadhā'—this is the offering of garments. With the left hand, take the water vessel and pour water over the piṇḍa, reciting: 'O carrier of nourishment, nectar, ghee, milk,' and so on.

May auspicious waters be placed in the Brahmin's hand for us. May the waters be auspicious—this is the offering of water to the Brahmin. Lakṣmī dwells in flowers, Lakṣmī dwells in the lotus, Lakṣmī dwells in the cowshed; may you always have happiness. May happiness be yours—this is the offering of flowers. May unbroken rice and arishta be mine for merit, peace, nourishment, and firmness. Whatever brings good in the world, may that always be mine. For those of such-and-such lineage, for our fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers, together with their wives, may this offering of food, drink, and so forth be inexhaustible—thus, the gift of sesame-water is placed in the hands of the Brahmin representing the ancestors. The Brahmin should say, 'So be it.' May this blessing be inexhaustible for maternal ancestors and others. Om: May the ancestors be benign; may our lineage flourish; may our benefactors prosper; may the Vedas continue; may faith not depart from us; may we give much; may we have abundant food; may we receive guests; may there be no beggars among us, nor may we beg from anyone. May there be harmony. Upon saying 'So be it,' the purification for the place where the offering is made is performed for the sake of the arghya. Taking the sacred grass, one touches the Brahmin representing the ancestors with it and recites the svadhā invocation: 'Om, let svadhā be offered to the fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers of such-and-such lineage, named so-and-so, together with their wives.' Upon saying 'Let svadhā be,' one pours a stream of water mixed with ghee over the offering, reciting 'You carry nourishment, immortality, ghee.'

Then, the question is asked: 'Are the offerings for the ancestor-Brahmin complete?' Upon confirming their completion, one pours a stream of milk over the offering and moves it. For the guest-Brahmin, the offering vessel is turned upright, and one recites: 'Om, O givers, O givers, may we be wealthy; O sages, immortal, knowers of truth, drink this honey, rejoice, be satisfied, depart by the divine paths.' Thus, the offerings are consigned to the heavens. 'May the offspring of the sacrifice be born; may these heavens and earths of all forms come; may the ancestors and Soma attain immortality.' Thus, the gods are dismissed. 'Om, let them approach'—thus, the ancestor-Brahmins are dismissed. The Brahmins who have not yet departed are asked to return. The remaining offerings are given to cows and others.

Upon the birth of a son or seeing his face for the first time, the vṛddhi śrāddha should be performed facing east, with the sacred thread on the right shoulder, using barley, jujube, and sacred grass, with worship at the place of the gods, ending with salutations, and with offerings made to the right.

'Om, all gods, listen to this matter, you who are in the atmosphere, you who are on earth, you who are in the fire's tongue, and those who are here—rejoice on this sacred grass.' 'Om, let them come'—thus, the invocation of all gods, and the offering of fragrance and so forth. The recitation for the assurance of unbrokenness is made.
